Can I Keep on Track? Working on it!

Tuesday, August 16, 2011

I got up at 6:00 this morning and then spent most of the day at school prepping my classroom and getting materials organized. I have my stability ball chair at my 'desk' if you can call it that. My desk is a semi-circle table I use for teaching small groups of children in a quiet setting. I don't have a 'teacher desk' and don't want one. My stability ball chair has a name, Chairy... emoticon... original, I know, but cozy. Chairy is very comfortable for sitting, yet bouncy and active. When I stand up, I just about launch out of it. I think I am really going to enjoy having Chairy in my classroom.

I wrote and sent off all of my letters welcoming the children back to school and into my class. Sitting at my 'desk' writing their letters and preparing materials helps get my focus around the new school year.

I got out all of the ukuleles and tuned each one. They will need several tunings before they will hold their tuning so they need only adjustments, not major tuning.

They look so cheerful!

I will ask if any parents want to adopt the job of restringing and doing the preliminary tuning of the guitars. I believe there will be a couple of parents who will enjoy doing that and it will free up more of my prep time.

I brought Stella to work with me today, all decked out in her 'back to school' bandana.

She was so happy to be able to hang out in the classroom with me. It was her nursery, as a puppy. She had her little X-Pen in the classroom and children took turns sitting in there with her while they worked on their classwork. I am certain that Stella remembers her first year in the classroom.

This evening, I went to Zumba after dinner. What fun that is!!! I had wanted to try it before, but when my hip and back were in such pain and in need of healing, the chiropractor, the physical therapist, and my D.O. all said to avoid it. Now that I have recuperated, I can shake and shimmy with the best of them. It is quite a workout, but the time goes quickly with lively music and dance. Love it!

All in all, it was a good day. I am trying on being back at work and staying in the groove of getting the exercise I need. It would be a shame to launch back into the school year and lose the momentum I have gained over the summer. I hope that structuring my days in this way will help transition back and keep my exercise schedule in tact.

You blog is just bursting with the joy of a new school year! Enthusiastic, new beginnings, optimism! Stella looks adorable in her school uniform and I can just picture you and "Chairy"!

Glad you are enjoying Zumba. I bought the dvd set last week and am working on learning the steps that my knee can handle and huffing and puffing along to the beginning of the Cardio Party until my legs are give out....then continuing with the upper body from a chair. I've been trying to clear a space in the basement for exercising (inspired by your special space organization!), but it's slow work with all the dust I've raised and still a little too hot down there to exercise anyway. Every day I go down and rearrange, clean or clear out something until I start to wheeze.... the floor is finally emerging! I also bought a big screen laptop to bring down there for the dvds.

The plan is to go straight downstairs when I come in from the shop everyday, grab my water bottle, usually at 6pm, change out of my uniform and into workout gear and exercise to Richard or Zumba until 7pm . If I can make this consistent maybe this time next year I'll be ready to shake with real people! I LOVE the music and only the salsa steps and pace seem too tricky. (And forget that Quebredita jumping...) The super fast beats mess me up. My little plan is also a sneaky way to keep the laundry caught up and also avoid the morning kitty littler scoopage! Multitasking!

I found out today that I'm back in 5th grade with last year's partner...the more enthusiastic of the 2...and was given the option for self-contained or cycling with her. We talked today and decided on cycling, I get Literacy and Social Studies and she's got Math and Science. I HATE teaching Science because we never have materials and the curriculum is dismally boring. On the other hand, I LOVE Social Studies. With only 2 classes there won't be that much movement back and forth. I was really looking forward to 4th, but, c'est la vie.

As Beto sez "no worries". "ZZZUUUUMMMMMBAAAAAAAAAA! " (I'm still at "ZZZZ.." but should be at "ZZZUUUU...." real soon! LOL!

Here's to keeping the "ZUM" in our "ZUMBA"!

Looks like you're all ready for the year! Stella looks beautiful in her back to school bandana. Where did you get all the colorful ukes? I have a Harmony uke from my childhood that I used to play. I also have a tenor guitar.

I look forward to reading your blogs.

Wedding Party and Singing

Sunday, August 14, 2011

We had a FANTASTIC time at my best friend's wedding party. We pulled our camper up so we could stay the night and help out with cleaning up the aftermath without being actual house guests and adding to the work.

My friend will be moving 2 hours away to this beautiful home built in the 1800's located on 70 acres of land that her new husband has lovingly landscaped and gardened. It makes me feel all melty inside to see how happy they both are - I am so happy that they found each other!

This picture shows her new home, some of the spread, and where we camped for the night. Can you see our Durango and camper way back by the barn on the other side of the tree? The weather was picture perfect for the party, and then we had three booming thunderstorms over night. As long as there is no high wind, I love sleeping in the camper through a thunderstorm.

Remember when I posted that I was nervous about singing at the wedding party? Well, I focused on not being nervous and it was a wonderful performance. Everyone loved it, and I had a lot of fun. Believe it or not, Mike hasn't heard us sing before, so he was surprised. He took this photo with his phone. I forgot to give him my camera.

Mike, on the other hand, loves to perform. He had fun serenading the bride's 92 year old mother, and she was smitten.

I HAD to take this photo this morning. It looked like all of the flowers had a bit too much bourbon after the party and got hung over.
emoticon

A great time was had by all. Here's to a wonderful life for the happy couple!

My Day Went Swimmingly, and Some Cute Kitty Pics ~

Wednesday, August 10, 2011

I scheduled a meeting with prospective parents for early this morning so I would have time to get to my water aerobics class. The one I love is in the mornings, so I will only be able to attend a couple more before the school year begins.

I got there early and worked on setting my classroom back up. It is beginning to look so bright and cheerful, even without the bulletin boards up and the wonderful personalization the children do with their study carrels. I brought in my stability ball chair to check out how it will feel at the table where I teach small groups of children. I LOVE it! And I don't think the children will be able to stay away from it. I'll have to plan in some special times when a child may use it.

The parents arrived right on time, but had a lot of questions. Great! I love a lot of questions; it helps me focus on the things that are important for them to learn about my class and our school. The thing is, they stayed longer than I had planned, so I did not have enough time to get to my aerobics class in a timely manner. I decided that late was better than not at all. Fortunately, I had my suit on under my clothes, so once I got to the Y, I just shed my clothes, showered, and jumped in the pool.

BUT -

The class was all wrong. It was not the same teacher (or participants) and it was very slow moving. Since I was already wet and in the water, I said, "Sorry, I thought this was June's class" Well, I had it written wrong on my calendar, June's class is an hour later.

So I had a fabulous water aerobics day today! I stayed the rest of the class, which was water aerobics for arthritis (fine, I have plenty of that, so not really inappropriate to be there) and then stayed on for June's class. I want to soak up as much of June as I can before heading back to work. If I ever feel like age is slowing me down, I'll just imagine spritely, beautiful, energetic, 86 year old June and get over myself. After June's class, I stayed for lap swimming. So I had:

emoticon 45 minutes of water aerobic for arthritis

emoticon 60 minutes of vigorous water aerobics with strength training

emoticon 20 minutes of lap swimming.

I've been eating well, too. Tonight for dinner: fresh tuna steaks marinated in lime juice and served with cilantro, an ear of fresh corn, and a cucumber/onion salad. Then off to a school board meeting.

Just for fun, a couple of kitty picks:

Vash, the stinker, likes to sleep in the fairy house. I had to take everything out of it because Luna, the stinker, likes to decapitate the fairies and run off with their accessories.

Vash also thinks he owns my guitar case and protests loudly when I insist that it is mine and my guitar belongs in there, not him.

Luna prefers to be naughty when I'm not looking so she can look like she's the little angel and everything bad must have been done by Vash - or Stella. Little Miss Innocent.

Hmmm - I think not!

My mother-in-law used to teach water aerobics. I'm sure she had a few "drop-ins". LOL

Singing Gig

Tuesday, August 09, 2011

My best friend (and singing partner) got married in March, but it was a tiny ceremony with her and her husband at the courthouse. They are having their party for family and friends this coming weekend, and she wants us to sing. I'm a bit nervous ~ I love to sing with my friends, but performing in public is a bit intimidating to me. It will be all about fun, so it should be just that.

What's the worse that can happen? I can make mistakes? Well, I make them all of the time, so at least it will be nothing new. emoticon

Well, I am sure the singing gig is way past. How did it go? I sing in a praise band and quartet. The more you sing in public the easier it gets. (Although I don't do solos--way too scary!

Congratulations for a job well-done I'm sure

my guitar is nothing more than a big teddy bear that I can get away with hugging in public.

I Don't Wanna!!!!!!!

Monday, August 08, 2011

Do you think I WANT to go to Body Pump? Usually the thought of barbells is daunting before i go. I know I'm in for an hour of grueling work, profuse sweating, muscle burn, and REALLY loud music.

I resist the idea of going, I want to procrastinate, to slack off.

But ~

I know that the time will actually pass quickly, I'll have fun once I get there, and I'll feel great when I'm done. Plus, I can see the positive effects weight lifting is having on my entire body. I think the latter is the most motivating to get over myself and get to the gym.

Do cute workout clothes help?

I feel a little shallow admitting it, but yes, they do. Putting on cute workout clothes helps put me in the mood.

Some days, I really, really have to drag myself kicking and screaming to the gym. And every time, I am so glad I did.
