I have been kind of low on energy lately and the back problem has really been rearing its ugly head. I sat down and talked to my coach yesterday and am going to back of of my training just a bit. I am going to continue with my Jiu Jitsu on my normal schedule, but I am only going to MMA practice on days where I feel up to it, probably once or twice per week. This will mean setting out my fight date beyond the July goal that I had, but I think ratcheting up my training more slowly will give me better odds of success.

I can't believe that it has been an entire month since I posted a blog entry. Training has been up and down. I have had several health issues including the flu and my back really acting up. As a result, my training has not been nearly as consistent as I would like.
That said, my training is still coming along. My stand up has gotten a little crisper, my takedowns and cage work have improved, and my Jiu Jitsu continues to explode. My cardio has improved a great deal in the last month. The one area that I am still really struggling with is my weight. I am still sitting at 285. Because of that, and the inconsistency of my training, I might have to set my fight back a little. The plan was for July to celebrate my 48th birthday, the heavyweight cutoff is 265 and I I don't want to have to cut more than 110 lbs. So we will see....

I missed Sun - Tuesday with the stomach flu. Sad to be down so soon after ramping up my training. I eased back in Wednesday with just some jiu Jitsu, too Thursday off, and had a great Jiu Jitsu class followed by a tough MMA workout this evening. My back was very painful, but I made it through.
Did some sparring. As expected, my ground work looked really good. My stand up was not as rusty as I thought it might be. My transitions into the clinch were weak though. I was dropping my hands badly. My cardio is still a long ways from where it needs to be as well. Right now, I am 20 pound over fight weight as well, so that too will be a major focus.
I am working with a different MMA coach this time around and so far have been very impressed. I am looking forward to great improvements in short order.

What a difference a couple of weeks can make! In my last blog post, less than two weeks ago, I was very frustrated because I had been sidelined by back pain. This week, on-the-other-hand, has been the best training week that I have had in a while. I have worked out seven of the last eight days, including two strength and conditioning days. In addition, I had three days where I doubled up on classes at the gym, either doing two Jiu Jitsu classes (Monday) or a Jiu Jitsu class and an MMA class (Wednesday and Friday). This is going to be my standard training schedule while rampping up for my fight in July, but I have not trained at this level in a while and it felt really good.
On the flip side, I have a long ways to go. I had to run to the bathroom and wretch at the end of the MMA workout tonight. I ran back and finished up the cardio rounds though, so not too bad. My stand up striking is also looking very sloppy at this point.
I have a lot of work to in the next 13 weeks, but I am feeling like I might be able to pull it off...

My wife went out of town this week. I figured with just my son and I hanging out, I would spend a lot of time at the gym. I was so wrong...
Due to an accident that was like something out of a Keystone Cops movie, I injured my back. Since I have a bad back (spondylolthesis), back pain is not unusual, but this has been enough to keep me on the shelf. I was doing dishes in the kitchen and the dogs were begging for leftovers. Being the big softy that I am, I put down a plate for each dog. As I turned from the sink to put something in the dishwasher, I stepped on the plate that the dog, unbeknownst to me, had pushed right up behind me. The plate slipped out, taking my leg out from under me. As I began to fall, already in a twisting motion, I realized that I was going to fall on, and likely injure, the dog. I twisted further and reached out to try to brace myself so that the dog would not bear my weight. It worked for the dog, not so much for my back...
Anyway, only ended up with one day of Jiu Jitsu and one strength training session this week. I am going to rest one more day today and see if I am able to roll lightly tomorrow.
