Today's funny...

Wednesday, January 15, 2014

Signature line - I forgot whose SparkPage It was from, but I thought it was funny & shares it with some of my non-Spark kin and friends -

"My psychologist's name is Harley Davidson !"

(Apologies for any typos - can't find reading glasses and I am on my iPhone with my increasing blurriness...).

After dinner spice/herb mix at Indian restaurant - what is it called?

Wednesday, January 08, 2014

I took a photo last week and want to identify the various spices etc included in the mix:

After dinner spices for settling stomach and helping digestion, as well as mouth freshener. Some names mentioned in one website
chowhound.chow.com/topics/497
312

In this photo, I'm fairly sure the long striped spice (or herb?) is either fennel or fenugreek. I get those two mixed up. (Yep - Fennel seed, called Saunf.)

The white teardrop seed is sesame seed.

The red balls are crunchy and sweet or possibly minty or anise candy?

I'm not sure about the long white shreds - I don't remember tasting coconut but these kinda look like it.

I'm also not sure what the smooth orangy round things are - almost want to say lentils or split peas/"dal" but these are smaller than lentils. Maybe it's the other fennel/fenugreek that the first was not? (Later - yep, the orangy smooth ones are fenugreek.

Another cool website of spice photos -

Brown rope looking things? Maybe shredded cinnamon?

In any case - I want to mix up something similar to have on hand for bad meal days...

Can't tell from the picture, but I know coriander, cumin and fennel seeds steeped as a tea are wonderful for digestion.

And fennel is used as a remedy for baby's colic.

I like that anise seed mix too. Your question encouraged me to get an answer. It is called Mukhwas. Not surprisingly there are many recipes for the mixture. I'm going to spend some time looking at recipes to see which one I may try ... or maybe I'll simply buy a pre-made mix at the local Indian grocery.

Here's a link to get you started!

Eight Surprising Side Effects of Weight Loss - online article

Thursday, January 02, 2014

Remember yesterday's blog? Same issue if the paper had ANOTHER fascinating article! (Or else I am easily amused and/or distracted. I think both. Anything to avoid the pain of exercise...).

This article came from the FITBIE.com website - which I hadn't heard of, until today. I cut the newspaper version out, but think I will capture the article off the website later on, and print it off on inspirational paper... And incorporated some of these "side effects" as actual goals!!

Here is the link:

-weight-loss

I may add more later but will edit this when I do. Or not???

(Hey thanks for pointing out link was not working! Think I got it fixed now!)

Do Yoga With Me?

Wednesday, January 01, 2014

I was one of the "victims" of the Spark Deal of a "lifetime" subscription to the New Element Yoga website a few years ago. Never could get videos to load up on my phone or iPad, and some of the videos wouldn't even play on my computer. Many had poor acoustics, so I couldn't understand the teachers. Website kept locking me out even when I carefully typed in my password. Other days I got in just fine but a video wouldn't work. Tried again a few weeks ago and there is no website - "domain name for sale" and I could find no online info as to where the people went...

Yesterday's newspaper, near the "Ask Dr Oz" column, there was a little article about a new website for yoga! (Tuesdays paper always has the health and fitness segment in it.).

This one is called "DoYogaWithMe" -

www.doyogawithme.com

And wow, it's free, it's right there - can select a work out based on length of workout time, level of experience (yours - beginner, intermediate, advanced, guru etc); type of yoga - the various Sanskrit names like Hatha, etc as well as things like Yoga for Runners, Yoga for Seniors, even a Pilates channel. There is also a selector for a specific teacher.

It's free - supported by DVD sales, and donations.

I did one of the shorter ones for Seniors and it turned out to be a seated workout opening up shoulders and thoracic region of the back. I enjoyed it.

Now, fun as the blog is, I need to get dog outside and pick a workout!!
