SHHHUT IT DOWN - Fat Talk Video (not #Captioned)

Sunday, December 08, 2013

My mom showed me a video on Facebook that was doubly tragic - heavier women at a dress store, talking amongst themselves. I have NO clue what they are actually saying, because of course, Special K (United States) made no effort to have the video commercially captioned. It wasn't until the camera close-up zoomed into the "tags" on the clothing with comments printed on saying stuff like "I'd look fat in this" or "I have a muffin top" etc and I'd see the hurt and puzzled expression on the women's faces, that I began to get an idea of what the video is about. And at the end, there's some text that sort of clarifies some more, but I still felt left out and not included in the whole video.

Here it is:

And for those of you on Twitter, you can look for @SpecialKUS (I don't know if I will have to re-edit this for the special characters that are used for Twitter accounts and the hash tags, since it will look like HTML code for links etc.). The Hastag is #FightFatTalk

I believe the message they are trying to convey is in harmony with many of the articles on SparkPeople - it's just that they are going at it in an "Audist" way... Audist meaning those who are hearing, sort of the same top man/bottom man one up/one down unequal ratio, with people who are hearing assuming that they are "superior" because they have hearing, and they see deafness or being hard of hearing as somehow "faulty" or "abnormal (I'm not impaired, so don't even start up with the whole "hearing impaired" - that's totally incorrect and most deaf/hh don't like being called "impaired".

It's the same kind of one up/one down thing like the whole historical male vs female or black vs white vs people of multiple colors or the whole white collar vs blue collar - whatever. And here the video is fighting against the self-labeling of "fatness" instead of just accepting what is and being kind to yourself, and then oh by the way, if you're deaf, you're on your own sucker.

I've made my comments on YouTube, Facebook and Twitter this evening, will be interesting to see what sort of response. Hopefully Special K will recognize their double-standards and fix it. (Not like I buy their products anyway, since a lot of it is overly processed for my tastes, and that's a whole separate issue...).

(edited later - when I clicked on link above, it went to a Home Improvement site, so trying other links. Sometimes YouTube makes a customized link for those posting on Twitter?)

Later: My son tells me there are TWO different YouTube videos both uploaded by SpecialKUS, one has like 52,200+ views and maybe marginally better captioning, and the one I originally saw here had less than 2,000 views.

This should be the link to the video that has the greater number of views, and slightly "better" captioning...

But... here are a few examples of poor captioning in the other video, the one I mentioned earlier -

"... to show how damage awards can hold week reduced or ..."

"...tail and mane he enhanced hell ..."

"...sadism feel this way about sales most definitely I'll thing "

"... need to be jealous support reversing that ..."

Plus, the timing is very poorly done - they aren't showing the words right when they are being said. I know it's hard work, because I've done it before, but it can be done. When it isn't, it's an example of someone just sliding through as quickly as possible and not taking the time to go back on the timing and insert the text stream at that point. I was gonna upload the link to one I did on four years ago, but they've done something since then, or the owners of the video deactivated the caption stream (it's one of those deals where the video has one URL and then the caption stream is on another URL and they just "overlay" it over the video like a blank screen with only the words at the bottom. That's one way of doing the captioning process.).

So it's a huge subject but it's an ongoing thing. It's not only this video - it can be the national news on TV or any other video...

The message here seems to be a good one in general for all of us, hearing or deaf - we all have negative self-talk that we need to stop. And the video had a text comment in it about "we wouldn't say this to others, why do we say it to ourselves..." I had to laugh on that one, because I have been told to my face that I'm fat, or that an outfit makes me look fat, or other unkind things. Many of us here in SparkPeople have had cruel words like that said to them. So SpecialKUS seems to be a bit delusional in that context, I'm afraid...

Proverbs 23:7 For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.

I am not deaf but hard of hearing and the captions from YouTube are just horrible and I don't think they really care. They are so big and rich (like Facebook) that people with special needs are forgotten. That's why I am not on Facebook anymore and will never join any of the Google websites. Thanks for sharing. emoticon

For sure, we talk so mean to ourselves and wouldn't think of talking that way to anyone else! Thanks for sharing this.

BTW I did click on the CC button, but it wasn't very well done. But sure got the jist of it.

HUGS and thanks for sharing.

    Julia, the video is CC...

the fourth icon from the right
it's a CC button
it's default set not to be on it
simply switch it over
and it captions

Hope this helps!

My Mom would not be able to enjoy youtube the way she does without the CC button!

Happy Thanksgiving Humor

Friday, November 29, 2013

Had a small Thanksgiving with my immediate family and my mom. Just the four of us and not too many courses. I have not calculated the damages on calories but I do know it was less than it was when we have gone to luxurious multi-course Thanksgiving buffets.

When we got home, I promptly took JavaBeana (my mom calls her JellyBelly or JellyButt) out for a walk. I discovered that my MapMyWalk app quits tracking correctly when I put it in my pocket (why? Because my fingers were cold! The nerve of these apps users to put their iPhones in their pockets while walking the dog! And oh, by the way, of course my GPS would be improved with Wifi access - but I am not going to take my computer, DSL line, wifi router and go for a walk around the neighborhood just because MapMyFitness works better in Wifi! I can't control the cloudiness of the weather which might prevent connection with GPS satellites. Too bad.

So a friend sent me a hilarious Happy Thanksgiving humor - hoping I can get it uploaded before midnight...

Surgery snd a happy video..

Thursday, November 21, 2013

Last night, my dad had surgery on his prostate, trying to work it out so there was a better connection between his kidneys and the bladder/prostate. I guess it's not going so well and he may lose the right kidney. He is in a hospital in Racine, WI.

And someone showed me the neatest family video:

I posted it on my FaceBook too.

Someday we'll all have healing from Yahweh.

Anniversary of our First Date

Wednesday, November 20, 2013

Today was the 24th anniversary of my first (accidental-on-purpose) date with my husband ... We went to see "All Is Lost" and had dinner there at the theater (meals purchased in the diner inside theater can be boxed up to go inside the theater.).

Here's the flowers he brought me:

And earlier today, before leaving for our date, I rebounded (yep, I relapsed, need to restart the streak!) and while rebounding to my "running" channel on Pandora, I heard a cool song - "Just the Way You Are" by Bruno Mars. I don't know if Coach Nicole has it on her list of favorite workout songs nominated for 2013, but that is about to be on my list!!

I used to study to that song, but have been switching back and forth lately between my Christian worship music playlist and my 1960's/1970's rock playlist. And Mr. Mars is very good looking! Glad you had a fun date!
