Versatile Keurig (K-Cup) Coffee/Tea & OATMEAL Maker!! ??

Tuesday, August 14, 2012

So I'm a bit strange...

Awhile ago, in the "health food section" of our local grocery store, I recently discovered "Better Oats" brand of basically pre-measured packages of oatmeal or "multigrain hot cereal with flax"

Allegedly they have a website, but I'm not getting it to work this morning. The Facebook page works fine (if you are on Facebook)....
(There's also an official Twitter Feed, but I'll let you look it up if that's what you want to look at!?).

They even have CHOCOLATE oatmeal! Yummy! The Chai flavored one doesn't have enough cinnamon in it to suit my taste, so I basically add more to it. I'll also add my almonds, walnuts, pecans, frozen berries, bananas, coconut oil, ghee, almond milk, coconut milk, hemp milk, (not all together, all the time!! I'm not that goofy-goosey!! - these are just some of the add-ins I have used!!).

Anyway so I open the packet, pour the oats (or today, multigrain hot cereal with flax) into my SparkPeople coffee mug (or whatever other coffee mug that is actually clean enough to use.), turn on the K-Kup machine (or if it's on and the ready lights are on, I flip it up and down like I was putting in a new K-Cup, even if I don't put any K-Cup in there at all, or just re-use the one that's in there for a very watered down "coffee" flavored oatmeal...which is, um, kinda weird, but, I got kinda used to it....), and I usually hit the smaller cup size water level indicator (I have the older basic model with just the two sizes - one is like 8-10 oz of water and the other is more like 14 oz of water).

Then the water comes out already hot (mine isn't scalding, don't know if that's true of all K-Cups, or if mine is not "right in the head" so far as the programming?) and at first, I would go ahead and start adding my other stuff (butters, oils, nuts, fruits, as described above, whatever I had or was in the mood for or actually conscious enough to think about adding.).

Nowadays, I let it sit a few more minutes and let it soak up into the grains more. There will still be more water when it is done - which I just drink up to a more acceptable level. (There is more water because the Better Oats people's gimmick is that you measure the cold water inside the package first, and then dump it out into a bowl to heat the water in a microwave or into a pan on the stove. It's just a fast way to measure the water without having to dirty up a measuring cup and not risk burning yourself pouring the hot water into the bag to cook it. So they are assuming something like 4-6 oz of water, but the K-Cup's smallest cup size is like 10 oz of water etc. This is assuming USA measure, of course. Sorry, I'm not smart enough or awake enough to figure out grams and all that metric stuff.).

Side note: While messing around with the Facebook page, I discovered a $1.00 coupon off of three boxes (supplies limited)!! SCORE!

Okay so far, the flavors/models I've tried:

(oh hey, they just woke their computer up now - here's the product link I'm looking at now... )

Oat Revolution Thick & Hearty
* Apples & Cinnamon
* Cinnamon & Spice
* Maple & Brown Sugar (can't remember if I had the "instant Oats" or the "Old-fashioned Oats with Flax)
* Strawberries & Cream

Lavish - this is the chocolate one, yummo! (add more sweetener if you want, or even more chocolate!)

Raw Free & Simple (organic)
* multigrain hot cereal with flax - "Chai Spiced" flavor

Evidently they make other models (I suspect to target other demographics in other parts of the country?) - "Mom's Best" "Muffins" "Abundance" but I haven't seen those (yet). The other thing is they might be targeting like health food stores with those models (different flavors within each product line.).

Hey, wonder if they'd ship a case to SparkCoaches to try out and write for their DailyBlog or for a CONTEST?? Ya Think?

Somehow I've gotten off track here... I started off talking about my unorthodox cooking methods and ended up on a non-stop "Ronco-Oatmeal-Not-On-TV-You-Can-Get-LOTS-
of-Flavors-For-$19.95" commercial. I'm terrible. And I'm stalling. My oats are cold by now, and I've not even done my rebounding yet (it's raining outside!).

It occurs to me these might be super convenient for Worker Bees to take to work with them to help deal with the hungries that happen. We all know food choices are not always great in the Cube Farms. (does anyone beside me know about the Cube Farm Lady on YouTube "Cube News 1"? )... Also ... I've had them for dinner - except, instead of the sweets, I put in cheese, savory seasonings, stuff like I might put in rice or pasta.

Good Night, Saigon

Sunday, August 12, 2012

Today in history - I remember trying to reconcile, in my young little mind, the famous, joyous photo of the "Times Square Kiss" after WWII that us kids were always taught in elementary school history clases, with the seemingly angry, uncaring, and for sure, no celebratory  party mood, upon the fall of Saigon in April 1972 and the return of our troops. Today marks the anniversary of when the last American combat ground troops left Vietnam., August 12, 1972.  My thankfulness to all Veterans who served our countries (USA and South Vietnam) and my sorrow for the families of the ones who gave their lives, during the war and ever since then.

My son goes to Afghanistan early tomorrow morning. This saddens me tremendously that we still haven't learned our lessons, but regardless. I also remember how disrespectfully the returning Viet Nam vets were treated. I honor ALL vets, those living and gone. What a brave and courageous thing they are doing now and have done. Thank you for this blog. It is particularly poignant to me.

Last night I got a text from a friend that I've known since we were both about 11 or 12 years of age. She said her mom was dying and not expected to last the night. She's the youngest child but her older three sisters have already died, so she was really the only one left, other than a niece. And in texting, I found out her mom was only about 20-25 minutes away now. Last I heard, her mom was a couple counties away. So anyway, talked to my husband, and I drove on out to sit with my friend and some of her family that was there. It was a long night... and when her mom was still hanging on early this morning, I went ahead and returned to my home right about dawn.

It was so sad...hearing one of the family members recount how she snapped after a completely different relative who attends a completely different church, claiming to be "Christian" just inform her that she and her own recently deceased mom were both destined for Hell. I couldn't believe it. I'm not naming churches but was one of the well known protestant churches. The Bible doesn't show Christ going around and saying, "Well lady, you are already going to hell, just because you have a tatoo and listen to rock music." Uh huh. No way.

And when I read through the Book and looked up the words in the Strong's Concordance, I discovered that many Hebrew and Greek words with COMPLETELY different meanings were all mistranslated as the English word "Hell". Each one has a different meaning, a different concept - no way can they all be the same word "Hell" other than the translators made a mistake (hopefully it was an honest mistake.).

I'm noticing some bible translations these days just skip using the word Hell and just use the original word, like Sheol etc.

Anyway so back to the death watch. This poor girl just seemed so crushed, so defeated, and I have no idea what she tells or will tell her children about their grandmother (her children were at home with her husband.). At this point I can tell she's not receptive to hearing a different belief, no matter if I believe it is a "truer" truth. I'll just have to strive to be a better example... so that some day she can ask.

And it occurred to me that this holds true for other aspects of my life. I can't just go around popping people and saying "You should be following the way of SparkPeople in your attempts to lose weight. Walk ye in this way! Eat this food, not that!" etc etc.

Okay... so maybe this should be in the journal page, to treat this like a draft, as I'm not a fine example, wasted out from lack of sleep and not yet exercised or really even felt like eating all day (some fruit this morning.).

I want to be a better example but I am just not there...

Yes you are a fine example of a sparkler. I totally disagree. For me my friends on Spark always have my back and that's exactly what you did for your friend.
When I was in hevrew school up until Grade 10 we never learnt about hell. I know the word exists-gayheenom-but really it was never used as a place to be afraid of. As far as we were taught, Jews only believe in Heaven and of course the bloody Messiah who is sure taking his sweet time.
I guess you can tell by my pictures that I don't really practice Judaism or any religion for that matter. BUT interestingly enough in metaphysics, a lot of the words are in hebrew. WOOHOO
And I agree with PHEBESS-sitting with your friend was very much a mitzvah.
Good on you.

Sitting with your friend during this time is the definition of a mitzvah. Just be there for her, she'll find comfort in that.

As always, so insightful. Thank you so much.
I've learned a lot separate from a main Protestant religion I was baptized and confirmed into ... via a Bible-based church in the area i now live as well as The Shepherd's Chapel in Arkansas via Satellite ... teaching the Bible chapter by chapter, verse by verse with massive amounts of Strong's Concordance, too.
You do good in this world.

Entering Appointments & Journal Entries for SP Points...

Saturday, August 04, 2012

I'd noticed some time ago that the My SparkPoints page no longer had a link to the Planner page, where one could make calendar entries or jot down personal notes in the Journal section.

Got around to looking at it again today (I had long ago added the links to my Websearch page
as I tended to get lost and not able to find it in the usual SparkMenus... ). I was pleasantly surprised to see that I did continue to get SparkPoints for making a calendar entry. Think I also did for the Journal entry although I wasn't paying attention specifically...

I've made monthly reminders to pay the credit card bill - and I made it a yearly reminder, forever - so unless the credit card company changes to payment due date, I'm set for life!!!!! I LOVE that feature!!!!

You should be able to add a reminder to do the journal and reminder in your “Other Goals” area. If you want, I **think** I can add it to the Team Goals at the bottom of the home page... with the links in the description. Then you would get an extra SparkPoint when you say you’ve done it each day. emoticon

emoticon ***UPDATE*** I have added this as a goal you can join. I don’t think the links will work, but if they don’t you can copy and paste the links to use.

Following your link, I just added an appointment, and I think my SparkPoints had 1 more added; but I can't see any way to add a line in the Tracker to remind me to access the journal and calendar. LOL - I'll never remember to put something on the calendar without the reminder line! emoticon

WIN Weight-control Information Network and Emoticons? What are they?

Tuesday, July 24, 2012

Was reading James Fell column today "Body For Wife"

The Weight-control Information Network provides the general public, health professionals, the media, and Congress with up-to-date, science-based information on weight control, obesity, physical activity, and related nutritional issues.

Another article, this one written by James Fell:

And have you seen the new icons? I can see that there is a new blob of color on some of them, but I can't actually SEE some of them well enough to know exactly what it is!?

For Example:
A) emoticon what are these? Red hot chili peppers that escaped from the "Food" section of emoticons? Tied up with red ribbon?

B) emoticon This one has long puzzled me. Is the guy about to jump out of a window? Freezing in the window? Is this wintertime? summertime?

Moving on to Foods -

C) emoticon It's kinda next to an icon that looks like popcorn? french fries, but this particular one is like a wooden can with something goopy on top?

I keep wishing that this was an iPhone and I could just swipe it and make it larger. But it won't even do that much even on my iPhone (and I'm on the PC now.).

D) emoticon OOps this guy isn't in Foods - but what is he? Military? or just a really strange duckbill hairdo?

Did you see the new Dancing Fitness icons? Cool!
emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Okay, well I need to skedaddle...

B. Yes, throw the scale out the window. (Someone told me that.)

C. Too big stack of pancakes - seriously, what were they thinking????

D. Joe Cool Spark. He's up there with Joe Mullet Spark. emoticon

Funny! I've wondered about some of these emoticons too.

I think this one is a close=up of a bow and ribbon on top of a gift package.

This is one of those images that shows perspective counts! You see it as a can with something ON TOP but I see t as a basket with something INSIDE (like rolls in a breadbasket or fruit).

I don't know what this guy is.

And what is this guy?
