House of God is a description of medicine and medical training. This is presented with A LOT of black humor, and some (but not as much as you think) exaggeration. Although the author's medical training took place in the 1970's not as much has changed as you would guess...(although I do take issue with all of the sex between nurses and interns described in the book. At the teaching hospital I worked from 2001-2006 this was an exception not the rule as is presented in the book).
To the lay-readers who find the book's images and points of view upsetting, I would say only this: As a nurse I fully empathize with any medical practitioner, who happens to be a little "crispy around the edges." Medicine at any level of practice is often a mental beat-down, frequently unrewarding, and always tough. The "gallows-humor" that this novel depicts is a defense-mechanism for a lot of health-care workers ( Myself included). If you read the book from a perspective outside the medical profession, please keep an open mind...you have to laugh when you work in health care, because if you don't you will cry. Does this mean that myself and other health care providers are heartless and lack compassion? I assure whole heartedly it does not! Some days I do cry and my heart breaks...other days I have to give myself distance from the pain and I laugh....call it mean, call it heartless but it is a way to survive and be there again the next day for the endless stream of patients that need my care and expertise.
Overall this was an interesting book, although not much of it was a surprise for me.

I think a photo food log may keep me more accountable. I will take a picture of anything I eat or drink that contains calories...if it is calorie free (water, diet soda) I won't include it....By the way,I just re-calculated my spark calorie range today and it now is 1300-1650.
Breakfast:
Greek yogurt mixed with sliced almonds, raisins and sugar free apple cider mix. 3 Tbsp. half and half for my coffee..it is hard to see the raisins on my black food scale--but they are there!
Snack #1:
1/2 cup multi-grain cheerios and 1 baby belle cheese round
2 packets of crystal light for my water
Lunch:
We ate at Ted's Montana Grill after church today. It is SOOOO hard to control eating out, and this weekend has been tough for that reason. If I know ahead of time where we are going I can look things up but today I just had to guess what was the best choice. I had grilled shrimp and a house salad with a vinaigrette dressing. 1/2 of a pickle, and 1/2 of a slice of a roll. Could have done better but could have done worse.
Snack #2:
whole pan of granola
My portion
My daughter and I made Coach Nicole's homemade Granola bar spark recipe.....not bad, but a lot of calories for a little bit of food. Portion control is an issue with this one!
Dinner:
Salad with 1/2 oz goat cheese, 1/2 oz craisins and 1 Tbsp almond slices, topped with 2 Tbsp balsamic vinaigrette dressing. I also had a wheat roll with a pat of butter. (yes, real butter)
1 cup raspberries 2 Tbsp light cool whip and 1 tsp hershey's syrup
Snack #3:
2 pieces of sugar free gum
1/2 cup multi grain cheerios and a packet of crystal light
totals are 1626 calorie, 164 carbs, 76 fat, 79 protein, 2748 sodium.
I made my range for calories and protein. I was slightly low in carbs, and slightly high in fat (which almost never happens) and sodium (which frequently happens).

I think a photo food log may keep me more accountable. I will take a picture of anything I eat or drink that contains calories...if it is calorie free (water, diet soda) I won't include it....By the way, my spark calorie range is 1370-1720..seems excessive to me, but based on my activity level that is what it says I should eat.
Breakfast:
Greek yogurt mixed with sliced almonds, raisins and sugar free apple cider mix. 3 Tbsp. half and half for my coffee..it is hard to see the raisins on my black food scale--but they are there!
Snack #1:
1/2 cup multi-grain cheerios, 1/4 oz. Craisins and 1/4 oz. macadamia nuts. 2 packets crystal light for my water today
Lunch:
McDonald's cheese burger, apple slices and diet coke. NOT my first choice of where to eat to say the least...desperate times call for desperate measures....SIGH
Snack #2:
Grande skinny vanilla latte---YUMMY!
Dinner:
Faux fried Chicken, coleslaw (recipes on Eat, Shrink and be Merry spark team page) and Talk about Good Breaded Broccoli (Spark recipe from A NEW AMANDA). Plus a glass of red wine.
Dessert:
1 cup raspberries, 1 tsp. Hershey's chocolate syrup, 2 Tbsp light cool whip
1649 calorie, 55 Fat grams, 180 carb grams, 90 Protein grams and 1863 mg of sodium.
I ate more today then usual...my parents are visiting from out of town and my youngest had a soccer game in the middle of the day so we were on the run all afternoon. However, I was within range in all areas except carbs, where I was 2 grams shy of my range. All in all not a bad day....

Post dinner:
Juice of 3 lemon wedges in a diet coke (4 calories!) and my calcium chew (20 calories).
Total for the day: 1492 calories, 201 carb grams, 37 fat grams, 69 protein grams. All were within my acceptable range. I was slightly over in sodium at 2556 mg.
