Huh. Kinda surprised I haven't posted any kind of blog here yet, as it is yet another thing that I could use as a mind-break from grant-writing. I'm finding I need a lot of those, and I'm trying to make the best of the distractibility that writing causes to acquire healthy habits.
Case in point: exercise. I'm on a really good schedule with getting my workouts MWF, because it is sweet release from the shackles of a desk-bound life. I don't know how people whose jobs are desk-based do it every day. I find myself longing for the on-my-feet, variable, challenging lab environment, and I have to get up and walk frequently. often, it's to the bathroom, which reflects another positive influence of grant writing: I'm definitely staying hydrated. Mostly with caffeinated beverages, but hey! An occasional diet coke counts. Tea definitely counts. Anyway, I actually get anxious to go to the gym, instead of dreading the breakup in my work day.
The other thing: meal-planning, and eating consistently. For the past month or so, I've kept a schedule very similar to today's:
7 am: at home, answering emails. English muffin with laughing cow cheese. 170 cal
9ish: on the bus, en route to office. Larabar. 190 cal
12: break from writing in the office, before afternoon meeting. Leftover curried lentils and veggies with black rice. 380 cal.
3: yogurt at desk while writing for pre-workout boost. 130 cal. Elliptical for 30, pilates class from 4-5.
5:30: walking to the bus, giant fuji apple. 125 cal
7: Veggie omelette, slice of toast for dinner. 250 cal. More writing at home.
9: Late-night snack. Mini-bag of kettle corn, sprinkled with pumpkin pie spice. 100 cal
Total: around 1350 calories.
I feel like I eat constantly out of the boredom and monotony of writing, but I'm doing a fairly good job hitting my marks nutritionally, and I think I'm eating enough to sustain my workout days (MWF). I also walk about 30 minutes a day here and there, since I've cut driving out of my life. Things will definitely change a lot once I get back to the intensive lab science part of my life, but I've definitely grown to like having snacks available at all times, and eating frequently.
Well, the deadline is November 1, so one more week, and this hell will be over!!!!
