Checking in

Wednesday, January 02, 2013

Hey there Just Me checking in. Since September 29th we have been very busy. We placed my MIL in hospice for terminal lung cancer. Though we have a wonderful staff of Dr's and nurses coming in everyday. I am challenged with mantaining two households. 2x the laundry, 2X the grocery shopping 2X the yardwork and 2x the bill paying and financial stress. It has been very wearing on me. Through it all I lost 2 pounds but gained it back over the holidays.

I will not give up on my health or my internal happiness. 2013 is not a year for resolutions, It is a year of health and happiness. It is a year to reconnect with Family and friends. I would like to express my deep gratitude to those of you that have encouraged me over 2012. YOU are my shining stars when my days seem gloomy . Thank you Spark Sisters and Brothers for everything...Blessings for 2013...Paula

Here is our family on New years eve... Notice the big parts were left out....LOL

You are so strong and courageous and we all "thrive" when you are around. I hope things ease up a bit and that you continue to go strong in 2013.

I love this quote:
We gain strength, and courage, and confidence by each experience in which we really stop to look fear in the face... we must do that which we think we cannot.

I KNOW you can do this!

Oh! No! a stumbling block

Sunday, September 23, 2012

Yesterday I was walking along the shore of Lake Hemet, CA. I bent over to examine some rocks and oh my word, A sharp pain stabbed me at the end of my tailbone. I fell to my knees and wondered what had happened. NOT Again!!!! My back went out. In 2005 I was involved in a nasty School bus accident which left 3 bulging discs in my lower back. I take great steps to ensure that I do proper exercises and everything by the book. Just bending over can cause great pain at times.

I finished my walk and tallied 8634 steps for the day. My streak of 10000 steps has been shattered. I laid on the sofa with 2 ice bags on my back ,saddened that I would not meet my goal.

This morning I woke up sore , but not in much pain. I started off slowly and I am proud to say I have completed 11260 steps and I still have 1.5 hours before bedtime.
I may have to start this streak over But I WILL WIN!

I know about the back pain you suffer with .I am under . care with mine. I live on ice packs & hot packs, deep tissue massage, chiropractor & a tens unit which is a great tool for me.I will be getting one for home use. I have scoliosis that is bad.I never took any medication for it. They want to put rods in my back I told the surgeon NO not until I am in a wheelchair & then I would just think about it. I work in a pharmacy I see too much staff infection & MIRSA,. Hope you are doing well
take care

I somehow missed this blog of yours! I'm glad you've recovered and able to walk again. My back has been sore today from digging up plants yesterday, and I was really concerned it would affect my walking. So far it hasn't, but I'm definitely going to take it a little easier today. I definitely don't want an injury to sideline the progress!

Paula I am sorry about your back but I'm glad you are doing better now. Do you know why it possibly happened? Just because you bent the wrong way?

Yes keep up the 10,000 step streak. Maybe even bump it up to 10500? I know you can do anything you set your mind to.

Breaking streaks is never fun, but often there is a silver lining. Even though you had a minor setback, you still tallied over 8,00 steps. Not to mention that while streaks are important, the safety of your back and the monitoring of your injury are CRUCIAL in maintaining an active lifestyle. This small break in your streak was for a very very important reason...don't forget it!
Congratulations on getting right back on the 10000+ wagon!

Down the road 10,000 steps aday.

Tuesday, September 18, 2012

WOW I have now completed 5 Full days of walking 10,000 steps a day. All of the sudden I just felt my 6000 step goal was too weak. Sunday night at 8:00pm I only had 6154 steps,I went out and walked the block 4 times to get over 10,000 steps. It as still hot out 100* so when I came home I was hot and sweaty so I jumped in the pool and swam for 15 minutes.
Monday night I was closer to my goal. 8051 steps were quickly converted to 10,000 with just a few laps around the block. I swam for 20 minutes when I returned home. Thats 5 more minutes swimming than sunday!
Today it is bearly 10:30 am and I am over 6000 steps. I May have to bump my goal beyond 10,000 steps aday. But I will start working on increasing my swimming by 5 minutes a day!

Never give up and always Believe in yourself!

Awesome!! I love finishing off the day in the pool too. That is the one good thing about the weather still being hot outside, at least the pools are still warm, lol.

That's amazing! From 6,000 to 10,000 in just a week! I wouldn't bump your goal up too quickly from there, though. Wait until you can reach the 10,000 regularly without having to "catch up" at the end of the day. I waited almost 3 months until I felt I was ready, even though I was getting 12,000 regularly. You just don't want to move the goal too soon and then get disappointed when you don't make it one day. Shoot for the streaks - 5 is fantastic, but can you imagine what 30 would feel like?

Again, way to go!! All that walking and then some swimming on top!

Should I take a nap or.............

Thursday, September 13, 2012

It's 3:00pm in the afternoon, Its 104* and the students are having PE. in the gym. I have 30 minutes before they load the bus and I am thinking a nap would be really nice. I could turn on the air and drift off to that land of day dreams and make believe.

No No no! My pedometer only has 7268 steps and I WANT 10000 today. I set the breaks and remove the keys. I started walking the black top around the 20 or more basketball courts. 1 lap was equal to 3 minutes. That was nothing let's do it again! Lap 2 and lap 3 were 3 minutes each as well. I only planned on 10 minutes as it was really hot. I managed the 4th lap and looked at my pedometer. 14 minutes equaled over 1200 steps. I could feel sweat rolling down my back and my shins were barking. BUT i made it.

No Need for a nap I am wide awake now. I finished my bus route and come home to prepare dinner and finish a few chores . I just took out my pedometer and was happy to see my results.

I am pushing myself for the next 3 days to meet or go over today's steps! I can do this!

I don't have quite 6,000 yet and you just motivated me to go for 10,000 today. If you can make the extra in 104 degree I can do it.

You're one awesome lady. Congrats on hitting your goal.

Crazy about portion control

Tuesday, September 11, 2012

Everyday I weigh, pack, and portion out my servings. I have a few cheaters I would like to share. The first is a portion cup that holds 2 tablespoons of salad dressing. I purchase the cups and lids at Smart & Final for less than $3.00 for 250. There is no way to add too much dressing when I use these cups.

Second is what I call the 1/2 size snack bag. I pick up a 2X3 ziplock bag in the crafting store. These are great for croutons and small salad toppings. I use these often and find no matter how hard I try I can not over stuff these bags past 100 or so calories.

Keep in mind I use my kitchen scale, measuring spoons and cups to keep my portions under control. Not just once in a while. EVERYDAY . Its one of the big changes I have made over the last 3 years with Spark people. I will never give up!
