There was chocolate cake at work today. It looked really good and I thought that if I had a small piece it wouldn't set me back too much. I was wrong! I had a small piece (and didn't even eat it all), but according to the nutrition tracker, that "snack" put me back almost 300 calories!! In the future, I'll do a quick stealth search in the nutrition tracker before indulging at work emoticon emoticon

That's what I'm working on doing now. Know the calories and keep count of them all day. So far so good.

Happy New Year/Winter Walk Challenge Wrap up!

Wednesday, January 01, 2014

For the month of December, I participated in the Fitbit Users group's Winter Walk Challenge. We each chose a number of steps to walk and tracked our progress. I chose 250,000 steps because I knew I wasn't yet walking 10,000 steps per day and wanted to shoot a little lower so I wouldn't give up as soon as I neglected to walk 10,000 steps.

I walked 200,871 this month!

In the process I learned a lot about my habits. I learned that I should really pay more attention to my fitbit instead of having it be this thing that passively clips onto my pants. One day I walked 9,788 steps- I totally should have been keeping an eye on things because that is too close to 10,000! If I had been paying attention, I could have done something active to reach 10,000.

I also saw how my mood affects my activity level. The tail end of December was HORRIBLE for me, which led to a depressive episode and just kind of laying around the house. Clearly I need a better support/coping system in place (besides therapy) so that I can bounce back quicker.

I really liked this challenge and will aim for 250,000 steps this month too!

#Sparktheseason- Days 8-9

Monday, December 09, 2013

Day 8 (Sunday)- I spent the day at work and, while I made efforts to take more steps, I didn't set aside 10 minutes to exercise. I've started taking 100 steps when I wait for the water to warm up, and another 100 steps before I jump into bed at night.

Day 9 (Monday)- I'm still at work, but I plan to edit this later with what I did to move! On a related note, I joined the Spark People Walking challenge and have walked almost 50,000 steps already this month!!

#Sparktheseason- Days 6-8

Sunday, December 08, 2013

Day 6 (Friday)- I went home with my boyfriend and spent a lot of time sitting and talking with his family. At 11:30, I noticed that my steps for the day were pretty low (2,000) so I spent the next half hour walking in place and doing parts of those Walk off the Weight videos that I could remember. In a half hour I managed to get my steps up to 3,000! Still not a lot, but much better. I also did 10 squats, then went to sleep feeling very accomplished :)

Day 7 (Saturday)- While still with my boyfriend, I tried to make healthier decisions. When we went out to dinner I was craving baked spaghetti and garlic bread but I knew that all those carbs would leave me feeling hungry later. Instead I tried to create a varied plate with salmon, red beans, rice, and edamame. I ended up hating the rice and swapping it for french fries (he offered me some and they were so good!) and I still managed to stay under my calories for the day. I forgot to take 10 dedicated minutes to move my body, but we did a lot of walking around the mall and Walmart earlier.

Day 8 (Sunday)- Today I work 10am-5pm. I brought a lunch and healthy snacks so I won't be tempted to use the vending machine. I hope to update this later with what I did for my 10 minute #sparktheseason challenge.

#Sparktheseason- Day 6 (day 1 for me)

Friday, December 06, 2013

I have decided on my goal: I will find some way to be active/move my body for 10 minutes each day. It's a small goal, but an important one. Spark Guy says that even 10 minutes of exercise are important.

In other news, I just plugged what I ate so far today into the tracker and it felt really good to be taking this seriously again. Like I said earlier, I will be without internet this weekend, as well as for a week around Christmastime, which will be challenging but I can still do these things and add them after the fact.

Edit: I just joined the Unofficial Sparkpeople Walking Challenge and made a goal to walk 250,000 steps this month. I'm already almost at 30,000 emoticon

Goals, even small ones, are better than wondering around aimlessly!! Every minute of exercise is important. Glad to hear you're entering your info into the tracker and taking it seriously. Maybe if you have a cell phone you can track from there... you don't have to buy the app. Just log on to SP through your phone's internet if you can and track away!!
