Monday's Quote

Monday, January 30, 2012

"I always wanted a happy ending... Now I've learned, the hard way, that some poems don't rhyme, and some stories don't have a clear beginning, middle and end. Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it without knowing what's going to happen next. Delicious ambiguity."

There's an old folk song called "The Arkansas Traveler". A man is met by a traveler who notices that the man is playing guitar on his porch, and it's raining, and the porch is leaking, and the man and his guitar are getting wet. The traveler thinks this a travesty and advises the man to wait for a sunny day and patch the leak. The man replies that the traveler should move along because his cabin doesn't leak when it doesn't rain.

This song reminds me that we should not wait to patch our leaks - for we don't know how long it might rain. We should get busy patching the leaks the minute we notice them, whether that's a sunny or a rainy day, so that they don't cause more damage.
