Relaxing Monday

Monday, November 05, 2012

Normally Mondays can be crazy, but since I have some vacation to use up before the end of the year, I started taking some Mondays off, and in some ways they are nicer to take off than a Friday.

Caught up on my shows on DVR, will go do some office cleaning, but at a relaxed pace, then I'm guessing my DW will want to go do dinner out. The rest of the week will be busy, but at least I'm easing into it!

Sandy Update

Tuesday, October 30, 2012

We survived Sandy! We did end up getting over 8" of rain, as forecasted, but we were spared the really bad winds that folks in NJ, PA, and NY got -- peak wind gust was around 60 mph. For those of you who are professional or amateur meteorologists (I am an amateur), one of the most amazing things I experienced was the low pressure from this storm -- it dropped to 957.5 MB (28.27 on the barometric scale) -- easily the lowest I've ever been near! The eye came very close to us, and that is an experience I will always remember.

The only damage we experienced is some of the lattice in our vinyl fence came loose, but it is at the top of the fence and is not a structural issue, so I will get out and get that fixed later today.

All told, we were lucky, but glad to have lady luck on our side for a change!

Glad you are OK! You are LUCKY! Our area closed down at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. We were also lucky and got some strong winds and some rain, but not much damage.

DC area (and my home) were spared as was yours. NYC had a tough time. Getting systems running again is going to be time consuming. Imagine a storm 1000 miles across! This one was outside of living experience.

@PLMITCH -- glad your family is fine. emoticon

Sandy

Monday, October 29, 2012

Sandy has made her presence felt last evening and into this morning. Over 3" of rain so far, with the forecast of up to 8" possible. Amazingly enough, that amount of rain would still not get us back to "normal" for the year -- we are close to 12" under for the year!

Off and on gusts of wind, but nothing like what we will get later today and tonight as Sandy approaches. Keeping my fingers crossed that the power stays on, but we're as prepared as we can be if it does go out.

We had high winds and lots of rain here in Toronto with power outages due to fallen trees...and a few large puddles on the freeway.

Sending prayers to everyone in Sandy's path. I live on the West Coast in the Chehalis Valley and we are having a lot of rain. River flooding is a possibility but I live halfway up a steep hill if it does happen. I don't worry about it, just keep my pantry stocked up 'just in case'.

Stay as safe as you can.

GOAL ACHEIVED! First sub-30 minute 3 mile run!

Tuesday, October 23, 2012

What a great sight to see:

After toying for the past few weeks with breaking the 30 minute / 3 mile barrier, I finally did it today! As I posted on Facebook, nothing like what Felix Baumgartner did in his space jump last week in breaking the sound barrier, but for me, it's a BIG DEAL!

Next goal: 5K under 30 minutes!

Motivators

Thursday, October 18, 2012

A few things that have happened in the past few days will keep me motivated to continue pushing to better health:

- Weight: 181.6 at home, scale at the Dr office was 182, pretty much splitting hairs. Goal is 179. I do like the scale ay my YMCA -- it came up at 176!!

- Meds: Prior to WLS, was taking 3 meds, 1 for cholesterol, 2 for diabetes (Glipizide 1x/day, Metformin 1000 mg 2x/day). After my Dr visit yesterday, now splitting the 1000 mg Metformin in half and taking it just at dinnertime. Ha1C is at 5.9, "normal" (what a WONDERFUL word!) is 5.7. I'm almost there! With a little more hard work, I'll be completely off Metformin in January 2013!

- Running: I always like to tell everyone that prior to WLS, I HATED running! Hardly ever did it, and when I HAD to run I despised it! Well, not no more! I enjoy it! I look forward to it! I run 5K's! Etc, etc....

So one of my current goals is to run 3 miles under 30 minutes. This morning, I thought I was there on the treadmill! But to my SLIGHT dismay, I hit an even 30:00!! Just one second off! Oh well, more motivation to achieve the goal!
emoticon

So I'm feeling good that I'll achieve these goals over the next few months. Of course I'll need to set some new goals, but it just feels good to be knocking on the door, so to speak!
