Why is it not good to skip a meal!

Saturday, October 06, 2012

Yesterday (Friday) was one of those crazy good days...worked in the AM, then as soon as I finished a conference call at noon, we packed the dogs in the minivan and headed to the beach. We were in such a rush that I forgot to get some lunch, which at the time we left was OK b/c I was not all that hungry + we wanted to get going. Well, never did end up having lunch, snacked on some Lance crackers on the way home (4pm) just to stave off the hunger pangs, and had an early dinner (pork chops!)

So far so good, but man, about 9PM I got VERY hungry again! And while I was not TOO bad, what stood out to me was that it was the skipped lunch that did me in! My body was not being fooled -- it knew it needed some fuel, the issue is that late evening eating can be problematic.

So, just a nice, gentle reminder, for me anyway, to eat when I am supposed to and not get sucked into bad habits like late night eating. I worked WAY too hard to drop those 82 pounds, and want no part of having any of them come back to visit!

I have had that happen too - our bodies know when they have been deprived of a meal and the hunger kicks in looking for the one that was missed at the most inopportune times. Good to learn from that and remember to eat our meals when we are supposed to so we prevent becoming overly hungry. That usually sets me up for a fall. Hope you had a great day at the beach.

Funny how the body knows when there's a debit in the calorie account!

The body is quite amazing and it is hard to trick it. Like NWFL59, my usual symptom of missing a meal is a nasty headache.

I have certainly found that I do better if I eat several smaller meals and snacks throughout the day. Overeating at any given meal rarely prevents me from wanting to eat at my next meal or snack time. Therefore I have to budget my calories and spread them out through the day! Also, this prevents me from ever feeling over-hungry!

Ken, I'll ask my PA the next time I am in, but I truly think it was my body's way of saying "I need more"! And like I said, I could have made worse choices, but I do know my protein count was way down yesterday, and I think that might have been the issue (plus just not enough calories).

Our bodies know best for sure. I find I run out of energy if I eat too little. Good lesson learned, right? -- Lou

Yep we have to stay vigilant and try to make sure we have meals or mini meals per our schedule. I try to keep suitable snacks readily available for just such situations when my day gets compressed by activities (planned or not). Of course for me, my built in reminder is the headache that comes about an hour after a missed meal and gets stronger and doesn't subside until I've eaten one of my snacks/mini-meals. Good luck with your maintenance phase. I've still another 100+ lbs to go to reach my goal weight. emoticon

So, is it a side-effect of the surgery that late-in-the-day eating is problematic, or do you find it really makes a difference how the food is metabolized, Patrick?

"Greyhounds Reach The Beach" weekend

Friday, October 05, 2012

One of the events my DW and I look forward to is "Greyhounds Reach The Beach", which is centered in Dewey Beach, DE, with plenty of activities in Rehoboth Beach as well. Dewey is 45 minutes away, so an easy drive down. Our 3 greyhounds know "something" is up, and they'll get their chance to go down later today (Friday).

While the event is nothing like it used to be (literally thousands of greyhounds, big vendor tents, etc), it still is a great event with hundreds of hounds and now the vendors work out of their hotel rooms and some in the fire house in Rehoboth.

It will be in the low 80's today - PERFECT weather! We've already been down to do some shopping on Wednesday (don't tell my DW, but I got her BD gift that day! A really cool bracelet with a greyhound button from a real Greyhound Bus Co driver's jacket!). I'm sure we'll do some more buying today.

Several years ago, we discovered the GRTB event while on a long weekend getaway in OC. My DH and I were so impressed with these gentle giants and how well-behaved they were (we had no prior experience with the breed). Hope you had fun!

Have a great time. Hope your greyhounds enjoy it.

I belong to a rec paddling club. One of our members owns 2 greyhounds that she got from a greyhound adoption program. She says they are 40 mph couch potatoes.

Time to celebrate! One year "Bandaversary"

Friday, September 28, 2012

I know for me time seems to be flying in general, but I think the past 366 days since I had my WLS moved at warp speed!!

I could on and on about all the positive changes that have occurred, but I'll spare those of you who are reading this blog and just hit the highlights!

- Weight before surgery: 266.2. Weight today: 184 (82.2 pounds lost!)
- Waist before surgery: 46. Waist today: 33 (13 inches lost!)
- Hips before surgery: 50. Hips today: 37 (13 inches lost!)
- Neck before surgery: 18. Neck today: 15 (3 inches lost!)
- I've run in three 5K races
- I've totally blown the clothing budget, but for once that is OK!
- And in July, I decided to go bald, and I am not going back!

A pretty phenomenal year I think!

emoticon

So, year two will not be as dramatic as far as changes go. 5 pounds to go 'til I hit my goal weight of 179. My surgeon and PA both don't want to see too much more weight loss, but the 179 weight mark is one of my "holy grail" measurements that I want to acheive.

Speaking of "holy grails", the other achievement I am looking to hit in year two is the sub 30 minute 5K. As you can tell, the running bug has "bit" me!

Many people to thank, because this all does not happen without a lot of support and encouragement. Obviously, I am very lucky to work for a company that has outstanding health benefits, because without that, there is no WLS! And of course my wife deserves an endless amount of hugs and kisses for just putting up with me and at the same time being so supportive. And then there is the thanks to you, my SparkPeople family, for all of your words of encouragement and support.

And the journey continues....

Another Sparker had similar success. She cross posted a link to Kool and the Gang's song "Celebration". Humming that now while reading about your journey.

BUSY Sunday...

Monday, September 24, 2012

So the good news was that my youngest daughter was back home and came to visit my DW and I Saturday evening and Sunday. The bad news was that it made for a VERY BUSY Sunday for me:

- Cooked breakfast
- Drove to beach (45 minutes away) to see inlaws, let my daughter put her toes in the water, then over to homebrew shop so I could buy some wine bottles.
- Back home to let the dogs out
- Then north to PA to drop my daughter off and back home(2:15 each way, 4:30 total!)

Somewhat late dinner (8ish), but was able to relax and watch the Emmys.

I think next weekend will be a bit more quiet, as it is Race weekend (NASCAR) and we usually avoid being out and about with 100,000 fans here!

Weather Excitement!

Tuesday, September 04, 2012

Got home from our trip to W VA yesterday, in-laws in tow, around 2:30PM. Got them on the road and had planned to have a low-key, put up your feet kind of afternoon. Ah, but the weather gods had other plans. Around 3:30PM, it got VERY dark, and just about the same time I got an emergency alert on my phone for a tornado warning, so my DW and I quickly headed for the basement.

Got the all clear about 25 minutes later, and it turned out a suspected tornado did hit just 2 miles west of us. 28 houses damaged, 6 to the point where there were uninhabitable (roofs blown off). Our dogs were still at the kennel, and in fact the storm clouds went right over the top of them but thankfully the suspected tornado was still just forming out of the clouds at that point. We did take a ride over there to make sure there was no damage yesterday.

After that, then it was time to put the feet up, have a glass of wine, and RELAX!

Today, back to work, dogs are home, and plan to run at lunchtime. In other words -- normal!
