Weather Excitement!

Tuesday, September 04, 2012

Got home from our trip to W VA yesterday, in-laws in tow, around 2:30PM. Got them on the road and had planned to have a low-key, put up your feet kind of afternoon. Ah, but the weather gods had other plans. Around 3:30PM, it got VERY dark, and just about the same time I got an emergency alert on my phone for a tornado warning, so my DW and I quickly headed for the basement.

Got the all clear about 25 minutes later, and it turned out a suspected tornado did hit just 2 miles west of us. 28 houses damaged, 6 to the point where there were uninhabitable (roofs blown off). Our dogs were still at the kennel, and in fact the storm clouds went right over the top of them but thankfully the suspected tornado was still just forming out of the clouds at that point. We did take a ride over there to make sure there was no damage yesterday.

After that, then it was time to put the feet up, have a glass of wine, and RELAX!

Today, back to work, dogs are home, and plan to run at lunchtime. In other words -- normal!

It's GREAT to have the windows open (FINALLY!)

Wednesday, August 29, 2012

OK, so maybe for one day before the heat moves back in, but it is GREAT to have the windows open and enjoy the cool outdoor air! I think it has been at least a month since we last had them open!

Well, back to work...just wanted to share.

Here in Central FL we're still hot and humid all day but I do eagerly look forward to the change to cooler temperatures when I can not only open the windows but shut off the A/C and save money. -- Lou

Know how you feel, but I've got the opposite. Live in an apartment and the climate is temperate. There are days when I close the windows because of the neighbor's cigarette smoking or bbq'ing. I like bbq but can do without their smoke.

Updated Score: Me = 1, fajitas = 1 (but I really am winning!)

Tuesday, August 28, 2012

OK, you are probably wondering about this blog and what it is all about. I'll try to keep this as "ungross" as possible....

Rewind to last Wednesday. My DW and I decided we wanted Mexican food for dinner, so we went to one of our favorite restaurants, and I ordered their Texas fajitas, which is a combo of steak, chicken, shrimp, onions and peppers. They brought out flour tortillas, but I decided to eat eat them "naked" (no tortillas).

OK, so this is where it gets a little gross. One of the good things about the lapband is that you HAVE to eat small bites of food, else food can get "stuck, which then the body tries to fix by producing LOTS of saliva towards the "stuck" food. Most of the time this works, but not last Wednesday! Spent a good deal of time in the restaurant bathroom, quickly got out of there with just about 90% of my dinner in a to-go box, then hung out in my home bathroom for a few more hours until the offending food got "unstuck" (it was not pretty!).

Fast forward to my lunch today. I decided I was not going to let the fajitas beat me, so carefully measured out some steak/chicken/shrimp + the pepper/onions (about an ounce) + 1/2 cup of refried beans, added it all into a Santa Fe WW tortilla, then topped it off with a dollop of green chile, sour cream, and a cut up tomato. Guess what? Nothing got "stuck"!!

emoticon

So I have evened the score with the fajitas, but really I fell like I won on this one. Would have been easy to write off fajitas, but I just have to remember to eat small bites, eat slower, and maybe have one or two of those flour tortillas to help slow down.

I didn't know that about lap bands and eating. Interesting. Sorry your dinner was interrupted but happy all came out well in the end. emoticon -- Lou

smaller bites are the way to go. I don't have the lap band but I tend to eat big bites and fast. My remedy for this is to make the food spicy. lol I tend to slow down and take small bites when my mouth is on fire. hahaha. I have learned to love spicy, hot food too

Thanks for the abbreviated version emoticon
I'm going to try to consciously eat small bites as IF I had a lapband and see if that will get me visible results without resorting to surgery. Glad it is working for you, but sorry for the side effects. Sounds like you are figuring out how to live fully with it! emoticon

More fun clothes shopping....

Sunday, August 26, 2012

Stopped at one our local department stores this morning after breakfast (for those of you in PA/NJ/DE/MD, it was Boscovs), as I had two goals to accomplish:

1) Get a new wedding band (I'll explain in a minute)
2) Get some new jeans for the fall

OK, let's start with the wedding band. My original wedding band, a very nice gold one with diamonds embedded in the edge, had just gotten way too loose, so I was having to take it off for workouts or yard work, as I was afraid it was going to fall off. Well, one time I forgot it at the YMCA, and thought for sure it was gone, but thankfully I went back and found it. So, my DW and I decided it was going in the safe for now and we would find an inexpensive band, which we did. Unfortunately, I kept feeling as if I had to remove for workouts, and I cannot find it. Spent much of the past few weeks looking, and intensely looked up in my office this weekend, but with no luck. So....we bought another one today, definitely more snug, and I am NOT going to take it off!

Went also looking for jeans, as they were on sale. Primary goal was a pair of black jeans, as the pair I had were now WAY too big (oh that is fun to say that!). Went in thinking size 34 waist, relaxed fit, but after trying that size on, decided to make a leap and try a size 32 waist, regular fit (Lee) And guess what: THEY FIT!!!!

OK, so I was on a role, so decided to to try on a pair of Levi regular fit, size 32 waist. I have found in the past that Levi's can run a little smaller than Lee, but lo and behold, THEY FIT TOO!!

I nearly shed a tear of joy. A year ago I was POURING into size 42 waist jeans (my waist size was really 46!), now I am easily and comfortable wearing jeans 10 inches less! Almost (but not quite!) speechless!

Not much else to say, except WOW!!

Routines....

Friday, August 24, 2012

As some of you may know, I enjoy cooking, and especially breakfast! My normal routine is to cook my DW and I breakfast on Thursday mornings. However, I was still in recovery mode yesterday morning from a battle Wednesday evening between me and some fajitas (the fajitas won!), so as much as I wanted to stay in routine, my DW advised against it.

Fast forward to this morning...now I am REALLY ready to cook! For me: 2 eggs, over easy, topped with my homemade green chile, 4 slices of bacon (vey thin), homemade oven baked potatoes (3 oz), and a Thomas WW Bagel Thin. My DW was the same except no potatoes and no green chile (she has never acquired the taste for it!). It tasted SOOOO good! Not quite routine (Friday), but it made it even more exciting!

    You're so impulsive ; )

Sounds like a delicious breakfast, though. I really enjoy my two-egg breakfasts when I have them. Although Friday is normally my day for a 'treat' breakfast, I knew I'd be eating two meals out today so figured it best to go easy on breakfast. If I come in OK on the nutrition counter by the end of today, I just might have a 'treat' breakfast tomorrow . . . .
