RIP Jon Lord!

Tuesday, July 17, 2012

For those of you who followed the rock music scene in the 60's and 70's, you may have read on Monday 7/16 that Deep Purple co-founder Jon Lord (keyboards) passed away. Since I have been a long time DP fan, this one hurts just a bit more, but given his condition (pancreatic cancer), I am glad he has been relieved of his pain and is free to wail away on his Hammond organ in the great beyond!

If you've never heard Jon play, try Spotify -- you can pick up a ton of his work. I have it on right now and am enjoying his rich diverse work.

Rock on Jon!

My daughter just completed a 5K for the cause of pancreatic cancer this last weekend. Hopefully, this is just one more life that will help raise awareness to get better ways to extend life.

Sorry that this is hitting you on a sad note. The sadder the note the greater the connection to life.

Rock on in your fitness journey and Jon's music can be part of that!

In spite of some last minute nerves, I went ahead and went "bald" today! I think I was more nervous doing this then I was when I had WLS surgery last September! emoticon

But...I am pleased to report I am happy with the results, and so is my wife!

Looks great! I keep telling my wife that I'm going to do the same thing, but she thinks it'll require to much upkeep for a lazy man like me.

When I shaved my head for the first time, I had some second thoughts, but after I ran the razor right down the center, there was no option but to take it all off!

That first day, I got comments about my bow tie, not my shaved head! By now (six months later), everyone likes it. (not that it took six months), but I only get positive comments now. and I love the feel/look. Hope you do too.

Wow. Fantastic Improvement. Of course, I shave my head bald and perhaps I am biased.

I think it looks great.

I think it looks good too. Along with the baldness, the hair color change makes you look a lot younger.

Another fun clothes shopping experience...

Sunday, July 08, 2012

Clothes shopping used to be one of my least favorite things to do. Why? Well, prior to my WLS last September, I always had a hard time finding clothes at a "normal" store like Kohls that truly fit correctly, especially pants, where finding anything above a 42 waist was nearly impossible, so either it was "pour" into a 42 or head for the dreaded "Big and Tall" stores where I would normally pay full price.

Thankfully that is no longer an issue. In fact now the "problem" is to not buy too many clothes in the same size because they will be too big! Nice problem!

My latest "casualty" was some microfiber shorts I had purchased 5 years ago when I had lost some weight. I wore one pair to play golf about a month ago and I literally had to tighten my belt on the last notch to keep them from falling down. Fast forward to last Thursday, hoping that maybe one of the other pair of shorts was smaller, but not the case, and in fact i could not even keep them up with a belt.

Fast forward to today -- mentioned to my wife that I need to get some shorts, so we stopped after breakfast at Kohls, and thankfully, shorts are on sale!

The best part -- size 34 waist!!!!!! And for fun, I did try on a 32, but it was a bit tight, but honestly the last time I think I was in a size 34 waist had to have been around my first wedding back in 1978!!

Of course this means come the fall I will have to start looking for new jeans, but hey this is a reward, and I am enjoying every minute of it!

    Such a problem to have......
I purchase most all of my clothes at the local thrift stores. I can afford more plus I take back the ones I can no longer wear and get smaller sizes. It takes a bit to sort through to find the ones that still have the store tags on them, or just look that they have not been worn much, but well worth it.
Keep on getting healthy.

"Staycation" Day 5

Friday, July 06, 2012

A really nice day so far:

- Up at 6am (I know, that does not sound like a vacation!) to walk the dogs and go the Y to run.

- Fed the dogs in the AM (my DW was working today, so she'll feed them this evening)

- Ah, then the best part: a 90 minute deep tissue massage! First time I have ever had a 90 minute massage, but heck if they don't go just as fast as a 60 minute massage!

- Home for lunch and and afternoon of TV watching (last Sunday's episode of "Falling Skies" and "Star Wars I" on blu-ray DVD!

We have a TON of leftovers so it will be a smorgasbord night for dinner. With it being in the 90's outside, being inside is OK with me!

Oh...and the best part of Staycation Day 5 -- the scale displayed 190.8 poiunds today -- 1.6 pounds down from last week....AND now down 75 pounds since I had surgery last September!! Like my massage therapist said today, that is like down a 3rd grader!!

So plenty to do this weekend, but I think I made a nice dent the past week in many of the tasks I wanted to get done. Still some that did not get started but I feel good at the ones I did get done or are in progress.

"Staycation" day 4

Thursday, July 05, 2012

Simple: early am yoga, followed by an early morning walk with our puppies, breakfast, and 18 holes of golf! It was in the low 90's but there was a breeze so it was bearable!

18 holes of golf is certainly something to do on a vacation. And you got to sleep in your own bed. Way to go.
