It struck me when I woke up (or to be more exact when my male dog Tomas "wet-nosed"me!) this morning that almost to the minute was when the anesthesia was turned on and I was sent into a short but deep sleep while my surgeon and his team went to work installing my lapband (and fixing my hiatal hernia, thank you!).
While everyone's experience post-surgery is unique, my assessment at this stage is VERY positive! Sure, there was the usual post-surgery discomforts associated with any procedure that involves anesthesia and having incisions (although the beauty of this procedure is 5 very small incisions!). And of course then there are the lapband-specific items: liquid diet, the gas, and the very weird feeling of this somewhat hard object just above and to the left of my naval (the port).
But...the benefits already, in just a week:
- The scale is moving the "right" way
- An inch around my waist is gone! And the promise of more to come!
- Less pain in the leg joints when I am walking
- The positive energy I am feeling in knowing deep-down I made the right decision, and sharing that with family and friends!
- Creating a new relationship with food, based on enjoyment and not on quantity!
Will there be "learning experiences" (i.e...negative outcomes when eating foods that the band won't tolerate): sure! Already had one earlier this week with some way-too-dry tuna! But how do you learn unless you try?
So I just wanted to share a little this morning, especially for anyone who might not be sure if weight loss surgery is right for them, or how things will feel afterwards. I'm just a "newbie" in the process, but I can tell you I have no regrets!

So Day 5 since lapband surgery, and I was able to add in some food I can chew! Pureed foods, mind you, but I tried a scrambled egg, cottage cheese, and even some canned tuna. So far so good! And it was nice to be able to chew something again!
So I am beginning to see a new relationship with food. Enjoyment. Oh, I used to enjoy food prior to surgery, but it was not in a good way. Too many times it was how much can I eat instead of how good it truly was. And feeling full! My dinner tonight was just a shade over 400 calories, and I feel full. Not stuffed, not gorged, just nicely full! And that is with no restriction! Cool!
I think I am going to like this....a lot!

So everything went well with my lapband surgery. Checked in at 5:30AM on Wednesday, and was home by 11:30AM. Needed pain meds throughout the day yesterday to manage the pain. Today, the only time I have needed it was at 3am this morning, and that was a 1/2 dose. Only clear liquids yesterday and today (and that has been fine!). Tomorrow I'll step up to liquid proteins, then if all goes well with that, Sunday will start the pureed foods.
Our puppies are quite happy to have me camped out in the LR with them. Daytime TV is an interesting proposition -- 200+ channels and still hard to find something I like. Thankfully, Cartoon Network has some classic Looney Tunes cartoons on.
And for my friends in RSN -- WOW!! What a way to end the season! It will be a VERY interesting off-season! I sure do hope Tito is still there. Theo and Curt -- I would not lose much sleep over them going, but what I am afraid may happen is that EVERYONE will be let go.

Yesterday was easily the best day of the pre-op diet. In loo9king back, I think the culprit may have been the Atkins shakes! So they will clearly not be part of my post-op liquid diet later this week. The EAS shakes I have tolerated much better!
Two crazy days of work coming up, as a simultaneously try to get work done and prepare my out of office stuff for the 3 days I plan to be out. Was up and working at 6:30AM this morning!
Got lots of yard work done yesterday, so if I am not feeling up to it next weekend, it can probably wait. Will head to the gym today for a cardio/strength training workout. I paid a little closer to my abs last Friday in the hope that it will speed the recovery of my stomach muscles post-op, so plan to do the same thing today.
