February Challenge-Crock Pot Recipes

Friday, February 01, 2013

Ok, We have been talking a little about our crock pots on the team Flylady Sparkers, so I put a little challenge out there for both team Flylady Sparkers and Losing and Playing. I want everyone to start adding their favorite crock pot/slow cooker recipes into the SP recipe data base, then come here and post the link to it. This in turn will give you the nutritional break down, but also help us out with new recipes to try :)

First, I would like to explain the difference between a crock pot and a slow cooker for those that may not know the difference. Both cook foods over a long period of time, ranging from a couple hours to 8 to even 10 hours. The crock pot cooks at a higher temp than the slow cooker. The crock pot is also usually digital, so you can set it to go off at a certain time. I have both, and love both, but I tend to only use the crock pot when I am home since it cooks at a higher temp. Also, since it cooks at a higher temp, more liquid is needed since the higher temps will make the liquid evaporate.

Here is the link to the Spark Recipe database:
recipes.sparkpeople.com/home.asp

If you are on one of those team's, please go to the challenge under the challenge forum in that team. If you are not part of one of those teams and would like to join us, feel free to join a team, we would love to have you :)

I wasn't aware there was a difference either. I just checked my new one, and it's brand is Crock-Pot: the original slow cooker. I wonder if they know the difference. I have noticed that it cooks hotter and dries out faster than my other one; which I now assume is truly a slow cooker.

Didn't know there was a difference between a crock pot and a slow cooker. I have a very old one which was called a crock pot originally and a larger newer one (only a couple of years old), both have high and low settings, but no timer and neither is digital so I don't know what I have by your definition. (I purposely didn't get digital with the new one as experience has taught me the more bells & whistles the more that can go wrong.) My older one is indeed an original crockpot by name when first purchased (at least 30 years ago), but I can't remember what the new one is called - I got it because it has a much larger capacity.

Tried Something New-Truvia

Thursday, January 10, 2013

I love to try new things, new foods, new places to go, etc. And with my renewed goal to eat better, well, one of the things i want to cut down on is my sugar intake. I love oatmeal but I love my sugar on it...a lot of it!! I have tried many different things, some work but just not up to par with my love of pure sweet sugar. So I had gotten some Truvia for free and decided now was the time to try it. All i can say is, i'm glad it was free...yuk emoticon I would almost rather have sweet and low...almost...i don't normally eat artificial sweeteners anyways... so, i guess for now, my sugar sweet oatmeal is back on the shelf for the occasional treat and not a normal breakfast item. But the good side...now i know...Truvia YUK! lol.

My daughter likes to put Stevia in her tea. I haven't tried it. I just put a couple spoonfuls of brown sugar in my oatmeal.

Thanks for the info. I haven't tried it yet, or stevia for that fact. Usually I turn to spices like cinnamon and fruits/veggies I find to be sweet and see if it adds enough.

emoticon...you'll find a replacement that works for you.

Try stevia. Truvia is not natural stevia. They add stuff to it.

I know how hard it is to curb that love of sugar, but it sounds like you are off to a great start by referring to your sugar sweet oatmeal as only an Occasional treat and not a normal breakfast item. I used to consume all those highly sweetened processed foods, and even added more sugar to those. Awful! Now I don't even put sugar in coffee.

WTG with your renewed goal to eat better! Good luck!!!! emoticon

My New Year's Goals

Wednesday, January 02, 2013

This is New Year's Resolutions Week (gee, imagine that...lol). What were your resolutions? Mine is to read my bible through this year and to lose 12 pounds which is only 1 pound a month! Trying to keep it manageable..lol. Also to devote at least 5 minutes to cleaning and decluttering each room each day. And last but not least, to waste less (food, money, etc).

Congratulations on making reasonable, sound resolutions, all very doable. I like your 5-minute a day for decluttering. A little bit of time devoted to one chore will go a long way. Good luck with the 12-pound weight loss challenge!! emoticon

It Just Jumped In My Mouth

Tuesday, November 13, 2012

I swear that is what happened last night with a piece of chocolate cake. I had decided on Sunday, that my eating needs to be got back under control. I feel yucky and tired and just plain blah! I know I've been veering off the beatin path and haven't been taking my vitamins either...so Monday morning, i set myself up to succeed...i packed a healthy breakfast with all my vitamins, a healthy measured out snack and a lunch that was yummy and fit right into my plan...and I had a dinner planned to get me right at all my goals. So imagine my surprise when i get home and found out i didn't have 1 of the main ingredients for dinner...no biggie... i found something else that would be quick and even more nutritional than what i had planned on to begin with...thumbs up and high fiving myself all the way...so i'm cooking dinner, talking on the phone with dd1 and cleaning up some things... life is going along and i looked down to find a piece of cake missing from the cake i brought home the night before and the offending fork in my own hand...what???!!! i stop.. i lick my lips...yep, that was me that did that...without even thinking twice, it was down my throat and on it's way to my tummy... i told my son to hurry up and eat the darned cake and get it out of the house...lol. In all reality, they were cut small, and after doing the math, i stayed within my limits..just the upper part...wohoo!!! i didn't fail...but i also realize that i am the baker of the family, and as such and with all the extra baking that is going to be going to the next 2 months, i am going to have to be more mindful of what goes through these lips...rule 1 is leftovers are not to come home with me! rule 2 is leftovers are not to come home with me...lol. Today is another day, i may slip, i may not... but either way, it will be recorded and accounted for and I will deal with the good or the bad...i will learn from it and i will move forward.

This story reminds me of something our grandson said. Sitting in the back seat with a bag of candy (who could resist!), he insisted it was his hands' fault. He just couldn't control them! Before he knew it, they'd gotten into the candy and... it was just too late. LOL!

With me, right now, it's video games on the computer. After vowing to break myself of the habit, yesterday I sat down to enter SP stats and.... checked into one of my favorite games. Whoops!

Thanks for your encouragement on the "Aha" thread.

My Night-With A Pic

Wednesday, September 26, 2012

After work I rushed home to relieve ds from lil man duty so he could get ready for work...luckily lil man was sleeping so i started dinner and went to watch a little tv... couldn't find remote...hhhmmm... what did that lil man do with it...i look everywhere he would of gone...nothing...so turn on tv the old fashion way...lol... then decide to start putting things up that he likes to play with...like my trash can...and yea, guess what i found...lol...the remote... so get that out and clean it off, he then gets up and while i am finishing dinner, he starts taking things out of the cupboards...i only almost fell on my face a couple times!! i then set him in his seat to eat dinner...to which he like most of...the chicken however he did not...and he would hide it in his seat beside him... what 1 year old does that?? this 1 year old does! i then get him out and clean him off...try to clean his seat while he is getting into other things.... including finding my candle snuffer and using it to play drums on my end tables...no big deal, i've had these tables since before my kids were born and when they were younger, i babysat a lot of kids...what harm could 1 little baby do... right??? lol...you can't scratch or dent these tables...but he did... then he decided it would be a good idea to play grandma like a drum...right on my cheek...ouch...taking a deep breath, i told him that was a no no and took away the candle snuffer...in which he then thought it would be a good idea to hit me for taking his new toy...Oh, and he also learned to blow his nose...on me!!! these are the days where i wonder if i am really made out to be a grandma...and then he flashes me that smile, and gives me a little giggle...and hugs me...yea, being a grandma is great...especially when the momma shows up to take the little angel home!!! lol.
