My Gripe-Nuts Nuts & More Nuts

Thursday, February 26, 2009

I haven't had a gripe for a while...and figured it was time... :) my current gripe is nuts...about 6 years ago, i was eating a wedding cake cookie that contained a macadamia nut...i didn't know i was allergic...but one little bite made it quite apparent. luckily i have always had allergies to something, and knew the warning signs...but even knowing and being able to react quickly was almost not enough... because of that incident, i can no longer eat any nut without a reaction... and possible death...i am not alone in this... in fact it is said that nut allergies cause the most severe reactions of all food allergies...the number of children (this isn't counting us adults who have developed it) with potentially fatal peanut allergies had doubled between 1997 and 2002. It is estimated that 3 million americans have a nut allergy. I know i have read many many times how people with nut allergies has increase over the years...this all being said... i now come to my gripe...why is that more now than ever before...everything has nuts in it... i use to be able to find many things that were banana flavored..whether bread, cake or is banana and nut... in fact, it's very rare that you will find just plain banana...except of course...a banana itself.... and no, it's not cause i'm looking more at the fact...i looked more in the beginning of this 6 years ago, than i do now...there are many cereals that i can't even try...cause they now contain nuts...and if i was to really be careful, as i should, i wouldn't be able to eat even more because of the stuff that is made on the same equipment as, more than ever, they are more prone to put that on the label, due to the severe uprise in nut allergies.... but i swear...within the last 6 years, i have seen more nuts added than taken out... why is what i want to know...i know they are not picking on me...nor those with allergies...but i am concerned that as americans, we see a problem, and give more to it than try to stop it...

so...that is my gripe for this fine thursday :) i'm really in a good mood otherwise, but dd2 and i were talking about this saturday and it's something i had wanted to vent about :)

Oh my. I'm sorry to hear of your nutty predicament. I love nuts and cannot imagine having to go through life without them. I hope that you have a future of yummy non-nutty food experiences that will keep you healthy, happy and safe!

PS: Vent all you like! We're here to listen!!

Boy, I really feel for you, Kitty! And you're right, food allergies seem to be on the rise. I am fortunate, I'm not allergic, but my little nephew nuts, shell fish, chocolate. As far as I know, my sister has only had to use that little epipen twice to inject the medicine when he ate something with nuts in it. And you're also right about banana bread. Unless I bake it myself, the store bakeries almost always put nuts in it.

Yes, the tracking feature is a great way to earn Sp points! Especially the cardio minutes! Plus, like you mention, learning whether you are getting enough of certain nutrients. Thanks to Nita, I'm back to tracking again!

I keep reminding myself how much this web site has to offer its members...besides all the wonderful support and friendships!

Like I said in Nita's blog, I totally need to get back to tracking just for this feature. I'm not really concerned with my caloric intake, but the nutritional data is invaluable. I mean, really... that's pretty darn kewl.

The Monday Meditation Answers

Monday, February 23, 2009

This weeks meditation was about finding your way when you are lost... here is the main quote:

It may be when we no longer know what to do,
we have come to our real work, and that when
we no longer know which way to go,
we have begun our real journey.
~Wendell Berry

Here are the questions asked and my answers.

How do you feel when you feel "lost" or "directionless"?
Well, i will say, i don't really like being lost....but more times than not, i find the fun in it...and find a new way of whatever i am doing.

When does life give us most of our most important messages? When everything seems to be going very well, or in more trying times?
For's in the trying times...

What kinds of messages might we get when we don't know which way to go?
Sometimes...the best message is wait...and just shut

How do you deal with setbacks? Do you find them discouraging, or do they give you more resolve to work toward your goals?

For first it was discouraging...of course i kept telling myself "see, you can't do it" but the longer i'm on SP and the more positive self talk i give myself, i do find it better to keep find ways not to "fall" and pick myself up after it... and... the most important, to me, is to work with it when it happens... just cause i fall at one point during the day doesn't mean the whole day is blown...

I get a little down on myself, then get over it, and give myself a kick in the pants, LOL!

I find them discouraging, but I don't let them stop me from plugging on!

Nothing creates more setbacks for me than trying to lose weight! Being on Spark has taught me more about patience and perseverance and how important the phrase "keep plugging away" truly is!

I'm a firm believer in 'it's all in the baby steps.' When I try to do all my healthy living goals at once, I fail. Inevitably. But when I focus on one thing, then it becomes habit. Then I don't have to think about it much anymore. Once I achieve that, I move on to something else. And before you know it... you can look back and think 'wow - look how far I've come!'

You'll get to where you want to be... slowly, but surly. I have no doubt!

Lucky it was just the wall that needed repair and not your son! Good thing nobody has started sleep walking in your family (or have they? I guess the dancing during sleep might count. LOL)! That would be a little nerve-wracking! emoticon
