post strep syndromeThursday, April 15, 2010This week I started a lowered dose of Keflex , 250 mg 2x a day for a month. I understand more about what is going on my immune system is attacking my body in response to the high levels of strep bacteria in the body. I am pale and I am exhausted. I see my cardiologist next week to evaluate my heart and see if this has gone into endocarditis. I gained 4 pounds of fluid last week and got very weak when after going off of the antibiotics for 2 days then back on them for 7 , was very scary started having chest pain around my heart and got very swollen. I haven't been to the gym in 2 weeks. I did go for a 2 mile walk yesterday and 1 and 3/4 mile walk tonight. I hope to get to the gym in the morning. This is a very hard road back to me. ![]()

Ok here we go.
On Monday I called my internist's office to check on blood work that was drawn 10 days before to check on a possible post strep syndrome, bad news it was off the charts! So yesterday I had to go have an echocardiogram which showed 3 leaking heart valves, had 4 more vials of blood drawn and a rapid strep test done. So I am not a carrier of strep. My doctor started me on Keflex 500 mg 4x a day for 10 days. I see an Infectious disease doctor on Monday up in Ft. Pierce as well. So far they haven't told me to back off on my exercise so I am doing what I feel like doing. I have taken 3 pounds off in 11 days. I am wiped out most of the time and now I know why. My doctor is calling this inflammatory arthritis and not rheumatic fever says it isn't there yet and was relieved my heart isn't enlarged yet. I am thankful I happened to be wearing my exercise heart monitor and notice my resting heart rate was 20 points higher than it usually is and say something to my neurologist and he pay attention to me and get the blood sample before I damaged my heart too badly.
I NEED A NAP!

I have not gotten myself a heart monitor. Had been wondering if I really needed to. After your experience - I'm looking for one. You may not have set out to share the importance of them, but thank you for sharing what told you to be concerned for your health. Will hope and prayer your next doctor's appt has a good outcome.
