Crazy storms! Microbursts are not a good thing!

Monday, July 09, 2012

My son and daughter in law live in Fredricksburg, VA, about 30 miles from me. Last evening we all had very bad storms, but they got hit the worst. My son called me telling me they had golf ball sized hail and torrential winds, trees down in his and neighbors yards. He lost power as we talked. Later he and his wife went out to survey the damage. Only 1 block from their home, a "microburst" destroyed a thankfully only small area.

Fortunately, they are fine. The white building, which was all brick, lost its roof and part of it collapsed inside where a group of cheerleaders were there for practice. There were 8 injuries, but everyone will be ok. Multiple small business in a little strip were damaged extensively also and many homes in the neighborhood that weren't in the line of attack still had a lot of tree and wind damage.

Just goes to show you how you need to pay attention to the storm warnings and really do what they say. I started getting emergency texts on my phone 30 minutes prior to the event, warning of the danger and the need to take cover.

That was a terrible storm and so glad no one was seriously injured. We got it too (1.5 hrs. from them), but we didn't lose power only phones/internet. We did NOT get the microburst thank goodness.

I can imagine that you would get severe storms given that you had hot temps and probably very humid air (there is a lot of energy that has to be dissipated) We haven't had any hail yet this year but I imagine we will -we always do. Glad you're OK and its always nice to get a break from the heat.

NOVA Sparkers Runway 5/10K Manassas VA

Saturday, May 12, 2012

Today 5 of us NOVA Sparkers met at Manassas Regional Airport for a Runway 5K. The race went around the runway and the finish line ended by some airplanes parked. It was a completely flat course which made it really nice. It was also gorgeous weather. I am the slow one of our group, but even I beat all my prior pace times :-)

I started off trying to jog more and stay with Tiffany, but I stopped to walk while she kept on. Along the way, I met up with another lady who seemed to be struggling. She told me it was her 1st 5K and she did it because the rest of her family did it last year and she had promised them she would do it with them this year. I stayed with her, and we alternated walking with jogging, but more walking. Once we got about a quarter mile from the finish I asked her if she could jog to the finish and she said she'd try. She made it all the way and the look on her face was priceless! She thanked me multiple times. As I came to the finish I saw my sparker friends waving to me.

Now I'm looking at another local race June 10th that Tiffany is doing. It's really nice having spark friends to do things with and one of these days I'll be able to keep up with them emoticon

Here we were before the start:

This is the first 5K I've ever done that gave out medals at the finish. That was nice!

Looking forward to another one with you all soon!

Congratulations on your recent accomplishment--I'm a bit jealous, maybe in my future... You were a great support to the lady who was struggling through her first 5K. That was a kind and thoughtful thing for you to do, while giving her the encouragement to complete the run. You did a great service while taking your own success, what an awesome accomplishment!!" Here's a emoticon and a emoticon for a job well done!!

It was such fun, Carla! You're right, the medal was a nice surprise. I thought they'd give out nice 10K medals and some chintzy piece of plastic for 5K, but they didn't. And the tech shirts were also a class act! I expected yet another cotton shirt I would wear once, then stick in a drawer because you just can't sweat in them without feeling weighed down. Would definitely do this again!

5th Annual Walk of remembrance: The Kyle Wilson 10K Walk for Fitness

Saturday, April 28, 2012

Today was the 5th Annual Kyle Wilson 10K Fitness Walk to remember Kyle Wilson, a local firefighter that died in the line of duty April 16. 2007. Fitness was important to Kyle and his family has this annual walk to not only remember him but to promote his passion, fitness. It's called "Pack the track" and it was packed today.

We started off at Hylton High School and walked the hills of Spriggs Road for 6.2 miles.

Thanks to Wanda, Tom, Kim, Celia, Brandon, Lisa, Fiona, Emily, Aziz, Keesha and her kids and Katina for coming with me! Spark friends, co-workers and family-couldn't ask for a better group of people.

Thanks to the many PWC Police there for their support today!

I didn't set any speed records since we leisurely walked, but didn't go at a snails pace either. I finished the 6.2 miles in 1:46:15. I think the majority of the 500+ walkers stopped at the 5K mark because we were pretty alone on the second half of the walk.

RIP Kyle....you will ALWAYS be remembered. Thank you for your service to PWC and for your ultimate sacrifice in trying to protect and rescue that family on April 16, 2007.

Thanks to all the area Fire Depts that came out today in a day of remembrance and a day of celebrating and promoting fitness.

I remember that date well. I was a nursing instructor for PW LPN school and my students did their clinicals at Potomac Hospital. It was so sad. But there was such an outpouring of love for the Wilson family.
I remember Kim that is in one of your pics. She was so helpful to me when I had the students in the nursery (since I am not an OB nurse!)
RIP Kyle. Thank you for your service. God Bless all who serve to protect us!

Thank you for sharing!

A bittersweet moment in history-pics of Space Shuttle Discovery-The Final Flight

Tuesday, April 17, 2012

As most of you know, today was the final flight of the Space Shuttle Discovery. It left Florida, piggy backing on a 747. It took a "victory flight" over the entire DC Metro area. I had the news on my entire way to work and with my Mom on the phone reading me where it was at that moment from the numerous Facebook and news reports. It circled 3 separate times before it landed at Dulles to be taken to the Air and Space Udvar Hazy Center in Chantilly. One of my co-workers called, ranting and raving about the traffic and so many people out of their cars waiting for it to fly by their area. Literally, in the midst of her tirade, it flew right over me! It was AMAZING to see and got me all choked up and excited at the same time. Here she was angry, yet I was so excited. I couldn't begin to get my camera out before it had disappeared behind the trees, but many of my friends and family got some awesome pics. My son got great pics and video as it passed over his work right near Dulles Airport. I posted the video on my FB page, but can't seem to get the link to work to post here :-(

Here's a few pics gathered from the thousands that were taken today:

    Great pictures, thanks for posting.

When I lived in Florida in 2006, I saw two shuttle launches. Well, not the actual launch itself, but I saw the space shuttles up in the sky and it was so awe inspiring. I can still remember the kind of roaring sound it made. I had pictures of them but they are on a hard drive that is now dead. I should have saved them somewhere so I'd still have them.

Great pictures, Carla. Thanks for posting them! I'm going to go to your FB page. Sent our son to space camp and he got to sit and fly the simulator. He was the co-pilot. I'm sure he was remembering that yesterday, along with seeing Enterprise in the early 80s when it came to Dulles. They actually let people on the teramac right next to it, and that's where we were.

How cool that your Dad worked for British Aerospace. I had a friend that flew on the Concorde. She said it was amazing.

Great post and pictures. You were so excited when it flew over you that I had to laugh. Your co-worker sure was distraught because of traffic, but this was such an event in history, I don't know how anyone could be upset. It actually is a GOOD excuse for being late. I am so glad you got to see it......wish I could have been with you......Love you... Mom
