NOVA Sparker meet up and onto the next week of Clean Eating

Monday, January 16, 2012

Well, one thing I noticed is that when you have a meet up of spark friends at a grocery store, you all shop, lol. We had our first meet up of the New Year at Wegman's. I know Wegman's has been up North for years, but we just got them in our area in the last few years...some of us in the area just in the last year or two.

We spent a couple hours chatting and catching up since we hadn't seen each other since October (other than Monica and I who ran the Hot Chocolate 5K in December) and meeting a new spark friend this month, Diane. Everyone looked great and it was fun catching up. Celia had to leave early and unfortunately I didn't think to take a pic til almost the end so she isn't in this one:

Then we shopped. We started off together but ended up branching out. Monica had never been to a Wegman's so I had a blast showing her around! We'd see one thing which made us think of another and we ended up shopping til after 9 pm (we got there at 4:30, lol). Here we are with a neat find- a drink full of the good for us chia seeds!

I sent Monica the 28 Day Eat Clean Oxygen menu plan and we shopped to find her lots of good whole foods. I wish one of us had have thought to take a pic of all the fresh and good ingredients in our carts!

Today we met again to go to the Wegman's closer to where we live. She had her list in hand and I bought a few more things I needed to get through this week. We are both ready (as are our other sparker friends that stocked up on awesome good things!). We are going to do awesome things in 2012!

Carla, what a cutie Levi is. I really enjoyed the pictures. I do miss my family at the holidays, well every day if the truth be told, but I did get two nice phone calls early today. I happy and thankful for that.
The eggs are really festive and all the food looks great! So do the smiling people!!

Run for Chocolate-DC Hot Chocolate 15/5K

Saturday, December 03, 2011

I was up well before the crack of dawn this morning to "Run for Chocolate" with 20,000 other people. I left my house at 4:35 am to meet Monica. We got the the race site at 6:05 am for a 7:25 am start. (had no choice but to go early so we wouldn't miss the shuttle bus). The race was delayed and didn't start until 8:30, so we were right by the water in the cold for well over 2 hours! Our fingers and toes were frozen, even in our winter gear and gloves.

No same day packet pickup was inconvenient when many live far from the race and can't get there on a work day prior. The parking situation was ridiculous. They did not check parking passes or bibs and I know many people who parked at the Harbor without passes creating more crowding as no one looked at a thing. I've heard from people who waiting 2 hours for their shuttle bus back...
The planning for such a large race in such a small space with no public transportation was not well thought out. The resulting traffic congestion caused many to miss the race entirely and some to park in VA and walk across the bridge to the race start.

By the time we finally were able to start, it was so crowded and the paths were so narrow that we felt like sardines trying to move. It opened up after the first 1.5 miles and I could freely move, although on an unsafe course.

I am a turtle and Amy and Monica were wayyy ahead of me, but I trudged along, proud to be there and doing my best. Unfortunately the race ended going UP a large hill...

I finished in the same time that I did the Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving. My time would have been a lot better if it wasn't so crowded, but I didn't do it for the time it takes. I did it to be out there, exercising and trying to keep active.

At the end we got hot chocolate and chocolate fondue and then got on the bus to get back to the parking to head home. It felt good to sit down in the heated bus!

All in all I was glad to be there to see Amy again and to run with Monica again and I did enjoy the chocolate at the end but unless a lot of things change, I will never run this race again next year!

Here is me with Amy:

and me with Monica:

Thank you ladies for your encouragement and for huddling with me to keep us warm. We will have to plan another race in warmer temps :-)

I'm so happy you were there with me. It was great being able to hang out before and after the race with you. I think you did great out there. And I know you're time would have been even lower if the course had been made for more than 3 people to fit down the trail. :) Hopefully there will be some more races we can do together!

The race is getting slammed on Facebook. Sounds like it was a disaster from beginning to end. Glad you had someone to spend the waiting time with.

Carla, you gals did a great job even under the saddening circumstances. I hope they hear enough feedback to do something to make things better if there is another time. Most that went to this race WON'T sign up again though. I am proud of you and how you have taken this exercise "thing" so head on. You are getting healthier all of the time. Love you. Mom

You are lucky to get to run, traffic was so bad people got there late and were not allowed to run. The R&R DC in March will be so much better than this RAM race.

Our Thanksgiving

Sunday, November 27, 2011

We had our Thanksgiving at Mom's yesterday. We were waiting for the kids to come down. Everyone was able to make it except Brandon and Lisa and we sure did miss them!

Poor Meghan spent almost the entire 5 days in bed. Today she is finally feeling better and ate with us.

We had a great few days and are headed home later today.
