A goal for 2010

Sunday, January 03, 2010

Well, I bit the bullet and joined a gym with my youngest daughter. After losing almost 50 pounds during the last 6 months of 2009, my goal this year is to continue towards my goal and lose an additional 20 pounds and to become more fit. The last time I belonged to a gym, I was 50 pounds heavier and not able to easily do a lot. I gave up, paying for the membership for the term, but never going back after the 1st few weeks. I feel MUCH more able to go and continue this year! We had our 1st work out today and I easily did 20 minutes each on the elipitcal and treadmill, 10 minutes on a stationary bike and various weight machines. I could have kept right on going but thought I shouldn't overdue it the 1st time back. Last time at the gym, I struggled to do 5 minutes on the elipitical so this is a huge change for me!

I've decided to take a monthly picture so I can see my progress as I go. This 1st pic is me before I lost any weight in April of '09.

This is my day 1 at the gym 1/3/10

and on the elipitical that I couldn't do last time

My goal this year is to continue to look for 5K's but to run them, not walk them. This is why I changed my user name....just something for me to see daily to work towards my goal.

Way to go! Running a 5K was on my "bucket list" too! I joined a relay team for a local marathon and ran the 5K leg of it. This made me run, not walk, because I was doing it with a team. Good luck! Looks like you are well on your way!

A wonderful holiday

Sunday, December 27, 2009

Well, the Christmas holiday has winded down and it's back to work tomorrow after almost a week off. We had a great holiday. DS and DIL redid youngest DD's room. They painted it, laid new carpet and bought her a full sized loft bed. The bottom of the walls are purple, the top green with a beautiful blue border between the two colors. We are getting pink tomorrow to do all the trim in. It looks like a totally different room! She has gift cards to accessorize it with new pictures, book shelves, etc. She also got new sheets that match all 4 colors. She got a purple netbook that she loves...she says it matches her room.

This was the first year that only youngest DD was here Christmas morning. The others came to visit, but it was so strange for no one to else to be home. Two of them live at home still, but spend the vast majority of their time with their s/o's and don't sleep here hardly ever anymore.

All and all, it was a nice holiday. Looking forward to the New Year and reaching my goals in 2010.

Blizzard....not usual for here...but we sure got the snow!

Saturday, December 19, 2009

Well, I LOVE snow, but even this was a little much for me. I live south of DC and we got 20 inches and it's still snowing, although lightly now. It started at 7 pm last night, WAY earlier than they said so I was out. As soon as I saw it coming down, I left the store to head home (only 15 minutes away) and it took THREE hours to get home. I live in a hilly area and so many people were out and having trouble getting up the hills. I didn't go anywhere today except to walk twice. Not that I could have gone anywhere....I shoveled for 2 hours and my car is still not dug out :-( That's my project for tomorrow. This type of snow is only enjoyable if I have no where to go and could enjoy playing in it and watching it. I love sledding though and we did walk to "the big hill" and sled. One of our weathermen kept saying we would be singing "make it stop, make it stop, make it stop", instead of "let it snow, let it snow, let it snow" Boy was he right!

Thanks! You are right about burning calories with the shoveling :-) I feel for you in Buffalo, LOL. At least here a storm like this only comes once in a great while. The last one was almost 15 years ago.

I live right outside Buffalo so I can only imagine what fun you must have been having. Ever winter, I keep thinking that if I close my eyes long enough, it'll be spring and the winter will be over. Not quite! In the Fitness tracking of Spark, I like to put in the amount of time I spent shoveling. I've noticed I've burned quite a few calories during some of these storms. In any case, I hope you're faring much better now.

I heard that about Fairfax schools too. I know Prince William will be closed the whole week too. They have never opened sooner than a week in a storm less than this! In 2003, we got about 15 inches and they were closed the entire week. There is no way they will be able to open because the buses won't be able to get around the neighborhoods and the walkers will not be able to navigate the sidewalks. You are lucky you live on a snow emergency route! Wish I did today, LOL. My daughter couldn't get into work today, but the Starbucks closed even though Safeway was opened and now she's off tomorrow. I'm hoping I can get to work tomorrow, but I really don't know. Stay warm and safe :-)

I am lucky, we live on a snow emergency street and it got plowed during the night... But none of the secondary roads have been touched. So I feel for you!
I just heard that the Fairfax County Public Schools are closed Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday (which makes the winter vacation start immediately). I have not planned any activity for my son for these 3 extra days, so I'd better get ready...

Pixie, no sign of a plow yet here either. We just finished digging our cars out...at least the 2 that have to be out tomorrow. I'm not sure I'll be able to make it out though....there is one lane sort of going down our road that big SUV's have made. Just got a WTOP text message that the Federal Gov't is closed tomorrow, but I work in a doctor's office that rarely closes since it's OB and the docs live nearby. It's 30 miles away for me though!

Carla, I live in Ann Arundel county and I'm sick of this snow!!! I hate being snowed in! Have the plows been by on your road? They haven't been on my road yet. Grrr....

Somehow it managed to miss Indiana-we got snow flurries and a rainy mist for the past two days but little accumulation. But our big snow typically hits the week of my birthday at the end of January. Hope you have fun staying home and working those calories off shoveling snow! emoticon

Erin, yes it is beautiful. We normally get less than today's storm in a whole season though, so it's A LOT for us :-) I do love it though...always have and always will.

Ahhh! Welcome to my world. Snows like that are every other day in Wisconsin. We even have festivals just to celebrate the snow. No matter how much you slide around, you have to admit - it's beautiful!

Oh my goodness yes, Simone. I thought I would NEVER get home and the roads weren't that bad at that time. It was all the people that kept stopping going up the hills and then getting stuck. I was coming down Minnieville to Dale and still can't believe it took three hours! Glad you made it safely home too.

Weekend

Sunday, December 13, 2009

I had a great weekend with family. My son Aaron and DIL, Amber had all of us over for a get together yesterday. We had good food (a lot of it healthy) and enjoyed everyone's company. We even got to exercise, playing with the wii and dancing along to the songs in RockBand.

Mint chocolate chip cookies

Monday, December 07, 2009

This is a WW recipe. I made it today and they were delicious!

Ingredients:
2 tbsp light butter, softened (I used a light olive oil margarine)
- 2 tsp canola oil
- 1/2 cup packed brown sugar, dark-variety (I used the Splenda brown sugar)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/8 tsp table salt
- 1 large egg white (I used egg beaters whites)
- 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 tsp baking soda
- 3 oz dark mint chocolate chips, about 1/2 cup

Directions:
Preheat oven to 375F.
In a medium bowl, cream together butter, oil and sugar. Add vanilla, salt and egg white; mix thoroughly to combine.
In a small bowl, mix together flour and baking soda; stir into batter. Add chocolate chips to batter; stir to distribute evenly throughout.
Drop rounded half-teaspoons of dough onto one or two large nonstick baking sheets, leaving a small amount of space between each cookie. Bake cookies until golden around edges, about 4 to 6 minutes; cool on a wire rack. Makes 24 servings.

Serving size is 2 cookies (they are small-I used a teaspoon instead and counted each cookie as 1 point)
Each serving = 1 Weight Watchers Point (this was for the original recipe, slightly less with my substitutions)
