Loving the bike

Tuesday, March 29, 2011

I try really hard to mix up what I do at the gym: treadmill, bike, elliptical, swimming, strength training. I work out my little routine...what days I do which ST, cardio, etc., but I keep coming back to the bike more than any other cardio.

I've found I burn way more calories on the bike than anything else. It's no secret to my running friends that I run pretty slow, LOL...but on the bike I feel like I can fly. I put it on different programs, different more challenging levels and each time it's a challenge to me to go faster and longer.

My Body Bugg shows I burn an average of 5.6 calories a minute when riding the bike whereas I burn an average of 3.5 on the treadmill, even running. My heart rate averages in the 150's on the bike, yet 130's on the treadmill.

I will continue to do all my other activities, but most of the time stick with the cardio that seems to give me the best results.

Hopefully with the warmer weather coming I can get out with my own bike and rack up some miles and hopefully my schedule will allow me to work in a spinning class or two in each week.

Glad you like the bike. We do have a stationery bike, but I don't ride it..hubby does each day. I have a regular bike that I hope to start using once the weather is a little better (soon, I hope). Maybe you could bring your bike and we could ride together sometime. That would be fun.

I love my stationary bike!!! After my pregnancy I lost 60 pounds biking during the Gilmore Girls. Unfortunately I quit exercising and gained it back, but once again I am dusting it off and find myself having a blast on it on my days off from my running program. Good luck and keep up all the hard work!!!

I love spinning classes! I haven't figured out how to do a bike workout on my own yet and burn a good amount of calories...but it's so appealing for days off from running. Spinning is so much fun :)

Eating clean

Friday, March 25, 2011

After seeing how well some of my Spark friends have done with Tosca Reno's Eat Clean Diet, I went out and bought the Eat Clean Recharged book tonight.

I've been eating a lot of really good food for the past year and have always favored fresh over processed, but I wanted new ideas and strategies.

I'm off to start reading!

Carla - I've been reading a lot about that also. I think it would fit in with the plan I'm already on. Think I need to do some more research also. Let me know how you like the book.

Magnesium?

Wednesday, March 23, 2011

Do any of you track magnesium with your nutrition tracker? I do and I don't think I've ever once reached anywhere near the minimum recommended.

I eat whole grains and nuts already but am not sure what else I should add to try to get the amount up to where it should be.

Any suggestions?

I never get anywhere near either and the trouble with the nuts is that they have so much of the other stuff in them - calories etc, so baically you can't win emoticon

    Highly recommend it.

I take a magnesium supplement from Vitamin Shoppe every day. I take 320 mg each day. My primary care doc suggested it almost 10 years ago. It helps me with many things, and one of the best things it does is really gives me good quality sleep. It regulates over 125 processes in the body, and deficiencies are linked to many health conditions.

Here is a link to the the Top 10 Foods Highest in Magnesium. For some reason they did not list artichokes which are very high also, Maybe they're #11. . .

Hope this helps you all!

Flaxseed? I've started adding it to my yogurt (along with chia seeds) for the omega-3's, in hopes of getting my triglycerides down at my 6mo. check.

I've been wondering about that too! I eat everything they recommend and I never get anywhere close to the value they say it should be. I think I read somewhere that magnesium is not something they are required to report on food labels (as well as potassium), so not having that info to input, maybe that's why we aren't anywhere close? Maybe? :-)

Happy St. Patrick's Day

Thursday, March 17, 2011

I just want to wish all my Spark friends a Happy St. Patrick's Day!

I hope everyone enjoyed theirs.

I dressed all in green and cooked corned beef, cabbage and potatoes (and carrots and turnips, LOL-had to get extra veggies)

Good day for activity-fun with the puppies

Sunday, March 13, 2011

Today was a good day for activity for me. Started by sleeping late-I know not much activity there :-) Then Brandon and Lisa came over and we took the puppies to the park to play for about an hour and a half. We walked all over, ran with them and generally had a good time. Mollie is getting really big and soon I won't be able to pick her up and carry her like this:

They all had fun together:

When we got back from the park, we thought we'd take Prancer and Toby out to see their puppy (the one Brandon and Lisa adopted). BAD IDEA, lol. They were so excited that they jerked away and out of their collars and we were left with their leashes with no dogs at the end! I ran after Toby and skinned my knee up when I leaped to grab him before he went into the street. Lisa and Meghan got Prancer. Back in they went (I had to carry Toby, all 80+ pounds of him!) and the puppies visited indoors.

I wanted to go outside and hula hoop. Meghan was busy putting all the pics she took on Facebook so I went by myself and used the hoop for about 15 minutes.

Meghan and I went to the gym and worked out for 1 hour and 45 minutes! I did 45 minutes of various machines and then 20 minutes on the elliptical and 40 minutes on the tread mill. Felt really good after wards.

I was worried with an hour less in the day today that I wouldn't meet my BodyBugg calorie burned target today, but I met it at 8pm :-) I way surpassed my burn, activity minutes goal and step target.

I sure wish I had the time in every day to have fun and get a lot of activity in. Work sure gets in the way....
