Christmas at Mom's

Saturday, December 18, 2010

Today was our family's Christmas at my Mom's new house in Virginia. We had a really nice time.

This is the view from their new house:

Me:

Here's me, Emily and Meghan:

Mom and Larry:

Me, Mom, Brandon and Emily:

Meghan, Emily, Aaron and Amber:

We even tried to get some exercise in with Mom's weighted hula hoop. Here's Aaron and Emily during their tries. I couldn't keep mine up long enough to get a pic!

We all had a nice dinner and everyone that is still here is relaxing now. It was nice that she was close enough for us to visit twice in a week!

Thanks for sharing the pictures...I really enjoyed looking at them. I used to do the hula hoop for hours at a time as a kid.... now, I can't do it for spit! What's up with that?

All of you look great in the pictures.

Love the hula hoops. I guess you are going to have to practice that one. I have never tried one.

Cold and working out

Tuesday, December 14, 2010

It is SO cold this week that I'm finding it challenging to get my normal work outs in. I am working hours that don't work well with my gym hours and I am used to going walking/running at night. I got some colder weather running gear and a cute pink head lamp to be able to see at night so I don't trip. I got all bundled up last night and went out, but only made it 30 minutes. At first I thought it wasn't so bad, but then going around the corners the wind started up and it was COLD! I'm actually surprised I didn't give up before the 30 minutes.

I guess it's time to get more creative or maybe dig out some of my DVD's and work out inside. I need more hours in the day :-)

Definitely time to dig out the workout DVDs!

Do you own a treadmill? I use mine year-round. Yep, I'm spoiled to the indoor, climate-controlled workout environment. emoticon

I just mentioned on someone else's blog that I read or was told by someone with some credibility that you're supposed to run for time in the winter, and not for distance. So instead of trying to tough out 4 miles, tough out 30 minutes (if that's how long it would normally take you to run 4 miles) b/c the endurance is more important than the distance.

I know what you mean..I'm getting my run/walks in doors....I hate being cold and just can't get moving so I'm proud of you for giving it a great try.. and 30 minutes is fantastic when it's cold and windy

have a healthy Wednesday

Jeff Galloway had a great blog today about braving the cold weather. One of his tips is to run into the wind first so you have it at your back on the way home. It's hard either way.

Aside from the fact that I absolutely love cold weather running, -25c is my limit. I found a YMCA with a running track to continue enjoying my runs. I love that in cold weather you are burning extra calories by keeping warm and with the actual activity.

New Spark name?

Friday, November 26, 2010

In 2009, I changed my Spark name to RUNA5K2010 because that was one of my biggest goals for this year. I have run several this year and as I was reminded by a dear friend, it's time for a new spark name.

I want something that shows who I am or what I like and one that is not necessarily a goal this time as I'd like a name I can keep and not change each time I reach a goal.

Same dear friend gave me lots of ideas to do with shoes and shopping after a day spent on a running shoe spree. Thanks, LOL. They were *really* cute but that's not the normal me (buying shoes like that).

Any ideas???? I like running, I am a big breast cancer prevention supporter, I'm working towards my goal weight and working towards running longer races.

wish I could help - I thought that perhaps it was time for me to get a new screen name - even tho my SparkName comes from my middle name and the year I was born (that kinda hangs my age right out there, doesn't it???)

The very, VERY non-creative me thinks.... something with either your first name and some numbers (date of birth or year of birth or combination thereof) or something like "RunningCarla"??

Turkey Trot and a day with friends and family

Thursday, November 25, 2010

Well, we ended up having a wonderful day to run! No rain (freezing or otherwise!) and nice cool 40's at run time. I'm so glad I went. Meghan went with me (she so kindly took pics at the finish line instead of running this time) and we were joined by my son Brandon and his girlfriend Lisa:

and Louisa and Tammie from my NOVA Sparkers team:

I had just about the same time as last time, but I finished! There were a good few hills but I felt good running for the most part. I did intervals and only twice when my Gymboss beeped for me to start running did I walk still. I ran all the other times I was supposed to.

Brandon and Lisa finished just a short time behind me. Lisa ran the entire thing, but she kept going back to meet up with Brandon who walked a good bit never having done a race before.

Afterwards we all went to Starbucks and enjoyed a hot drink because we sure weren't hot anymore!

I went home and picked up the Thanksgiving dishes I had made earlier and we headed to Aaron and Ambers. She had a ton of food and I am so proud of how little I actually ate. I had very small servings of only my most favorite things and big servings of veggies and half a piece of pumpkin pie.

I hope everyone had a wonderful day with your families! Happy Thanksgiving! emoticon emoticon emoticon
