The Zoo

Saturday, April 03, 2010

We went to a small, family owned and run, Aloha Zoo. It's on 60 acres of land and has a surprising amount of exotic animals all throughout it. We went through the little areas first where you could pet some animals and then we took a 30 minute wagon ride through the rest. We saw zebras, kangaroos, camels, emu's, a zhorse (which was a gorgeous cinnamon color)water buffalo, pigs, porcupines and tons of other things. I would have had a lot more pictures, but dummy me left my memory card in my laptop so I only got a few with my phone.

Here's Meghan with a pony

and Meghan with a donkey

Me and my Mom with the Easter Bunny

and here's me with a really big horse

and me with the donkey

We had a nice time!

I love the pictures. Any kind of zoo, no matter how small, is good enought for me - especially petting zoos.

Sounds fun! I love going to the zoo. All the walking is great as long as you can stay away from the calorie heavy treats they sell.

Relaxing in NC

Saturday, April 03, 2010

This is the back of my Mom's house:

This morning, I sat on the deck out back to start Sparking

This was my gorgeous view

We are getting ready to have lunch and then are going to the zoo. When we come back I'll do the Easter baskets.

Oh, I almost forgot her dog, Brewster. Makes me miss mine at home, but it's so peaceful and quiet here

Almost garden season

Thursday, April 01, 2010

I started our garden this week with some cool weather items. I planted various lettuces, spinach, collard greens, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, sweet and white potatoes and kale. The plants are only about 2 inches high at the moment (except the potatoes which are underground), but the weather is nice and we've had some nice rains so they should take off soon.

I can hardly wait til mid May when I can plant everything else. We plant zucchini, yellow squash, spaghetti squash, butternut and buttercup squash, tomatoes, beets, sugar pumpkins, turnips, corn, green beans, cabbage, and a ton of different peppers. Also watermelons and canteloupe. On one side of the house we have grapes, strawberries, blueberries, black berries and raspberries.

Last year we had a great year and had way too much produce to ever think about using. I took huge grocery bags into work and gave stuff away to a lot of people each week. I'll share again this year with anyone close!

Wow! I'm impressed! I have never gardened but I've always wanted to. Unfortunately, I live in a trailer park and my lot is about as big as a postage stamp, lol. So no room for a garden! But I admire you for your green thumb!
Oh, and your blog made me hungry!

that's swesome carla! i haven't had a garden in 3 years, dh reseeded it when i let it sit one season! but my mom lives one mile away and still does quite a bit so i have "volunteered" to help her plant and take care of it so that i can reap some extra rewards too!

hope you had a safe trip to your moms and have a relaxing weeekend. emoticon

Wow! you must have a good deal of space and a nice sized garden! There is nothing like a home-grown tomato. I love the fresh produce from my back yard, lol. It feels good to grow things too. Even the smell of the earth and the feel of it on your hands is cathartic.

Last long day before a nice long weekend

Wednesday, March 31, 2010

I'm working another really long day today so I can be off without using leave. Our payroll department made an error in our vacation accrual/use records and several of us used more vacation than we had last several years! I am "in the hole" for almost a week of vacation and had already planned to be off Thursday and Friday this week and all of next week. I scaled that back to a long weekend and am now off Thursday, Friday (the weekend) and Monday and Tuesday next week. The weeks are in different pay periods so 3 12 hour days each week and I'm good to go without losing pay. I plan to work from home (or NC) for the other few hours.

Thankfully I've been where I am for a while and I get 4 weeks of vacation a year. I just need to get through this time off now without pay and I will be able to enjoy vacation with pay soon again....without working the long hours on the days I am there. Also, this year I got the ability to work from home which gives me much more flexibility to take time off from the office. During the blizzards this year, I was snowed in at home for a week and was able to get paid the entire time. I'm very thankful for the technology available these days! And I'm very thankful to just have a good job!

emoticon good for you making the best with what you have. Shame on your payroll department for messing up the vacation hours like that! I'm a bookkeeper and for the life of me can't figure out how they did that?!?! New computer system and human error in data entry???

Wow, why penalize the employees when the payroll department made the error. Oh well, life in the work place..........glad I am retired. I am so very happy that you have put a positive spin on it though and its not letting you get upset. You are handling this issue with maturity and you can't help be a success in your weight-loss journey. Enjoy your long weekend.

Why it's good to be a turtle

Sunday, March 28, 2010

This is borrowed with permission from a friend who is a WW leader but applies to any healthy lifestyle change:

The WW lifestyle change is only possible if you become a turtle.

First, you have to stick your neck out and decide you will give it a try.

Second, you must begin eating healthy (plenty of Filling Foods).

Third, you must begin moving more, taking the steps necessary to move forward.

Fourth, there are times that you must retreat into your shell to avoid the Hungry Monster or the Boredom Beast.

Last, you must take it slowly, no permanent change happens when you do this quickly.
