4th of July Parade and Fireworks

Sunday, July 06, 2014

The awesome fireworks in Old Town Manassas. This video is just about 3 minutes of the whole thing. Sorry I couldn't get it to play facing the correct way , but it's still an incredible display. Each year an anonymous businessman donates 100,000 to the city for the festivities. They add that to their own budget and their fireworks always are the best around!

We started the day with the 46th Annual Dale City Parade which is advertised as the biggest in Virginia. They had 150+ floats and it lasted just over 2 hours. It was a gorgeous day, not too hot at all and no humidity. Here are a few pics from that.

After the parade we headed to Manassas for a day of fun. They had all sorts of activities to do and we got a ton of walking in! Aaron, Amber, Levi, Meghan and Joey and a few of his friends joined Dave and I.

I hope everyone had a great 4th!!

Visiting Leesylvania

Tuesday, May 27, 2014

Dave and I took advantage of the last day of a beautiful long weekend and went to a local state part, Leesylvania. I love it there. There are so many different trails to walk on, including a "Fit Trail" that has stations throughout that let you do different exercises.

There are places to picnic and sit all throughout the park and there are gorgeous views.

Here are a few of the places we hiked:

This was one of my favorite views, it was taken sitting on the bench in the pic below it.

This was a one of the cardinals we watched for quite some time:

Here's some flowers growing in the marsh:

I thought this was a really cool idea! They used 2 liter soda bottles and planted herbs in them:

This was a really friendly Golden Retriever that we watched swim and fetch his toy over and over. He loved the water.

And here's another nice view:

It's located right along the Potomac River. There is a large dock that goes out a good bit into the river and once you pass on of the signs you go from Virginia to Maryland. One of my favorite trails is a nature trail. All along that trail the trees are labeled with what they are and a little bit of history. All throughout the park there are landmarks and signs explaining all about the history there and you can see where houses were of the legendary Lee and Fairfax families. It's a great place to get some exercise while enjoying some beautiful scenery! It's also dog friendly and has multiple playground areas for kids.

My little garden

Sunday, May 18, 2014

This is my little garden. Not as big as in prior years, but it will be fine for us. Here is Meghan tilling it. We rented a tiller and took turns doing it, when one got tired, the other took over for awhile.

Here are some of our tomatoes, in our colorful tomato cages :-)

Then we have red, orange, yellow and several hot peppers

Then we have some green beans, spaghetti squash, lemon cucumbers and zucchini

We fertilized it all yesterday and now just have to wait for the plants to grow!

That's a great garden, Carla! My son has two raised bed gardens he made with cedar blocks and a bunch of potted plants as well. We've already gotten a lot of cherry tomatoes and regular tomatoes, as well as radishes and a arugula.

Rembering Lori. RIP my dear friend, our Little_Queen :-(

Sunday, March 02, 2014

I was so saddened to get the call this morning and hear that our dear sweet Lori (Little_Queen) had passed away overnight. We knew she had been sick but had heard she had a good day the day prior and were hopeful that things would start to turn around for her.

I know she touched every soul that was fortunate enough to know her. She was so encouraging, so inspiring and such a good friend to so many of us.

Almost 4 years ago, I had the pleasure of meeting Lori, along with Pixie, Star, Veronique and a few other spark friends no longer on the Rootin' for Ruby team. We met in Annapolis and spent the afternoon chatting away and we all had lunch together. Many of us brought our children and my daughter Meghan so enjoyed meeting Lori's daughter Emilee. Below are some of the pics that I had posted in my blog of our meeting that day, May 16th, 2010. It was a day I will never forget and in the past 2 weeks Lori had spoken of wanting to have another meet up like that again. We were so happy she was back on SparkPeople and doing better and able to see, type and participate again. She was a brilliant shining star and so sweet and we were so happy to have one of our team leaders back again.

This was the whole group of us that day.

This was our kids who enjoyed getting to know one another as us adults chatted

And this was our beloved Lori with Pixie and me

There are no words to express the sorrow and sadness I feel knowing Lori is gone. I've spent the morning in tears as I'm sure many of her friends have.

You are gone now Lori, but you will never be forgotten. We are all better having known and loved you and we will miss you terribly.

RIP my dear Spark friend. Continued prayers for your family.

Lovely tribute Carla! I lost touch with Lori. I am happy to hear she was seeing somewhat better before she passed! Losing her sight was so scary to her! So glad you all got to meet! I would've loved to have met Lori in person, but I didn't need to in order to love her! What a huge hole she has left in all of our hearts! Peace be with you and her family! Love, Melissa

Oh NO! As you know my Sparking is spotty at best during the school year. I took a self-made snow day today! I am so deeply sadden to hear this terrible news. While I new she was sick, I didn't realize it was life-threatening. She & Pixie are the reason why I never gave up Sparking! They welcomed me to the Ruby Team and were my inspiration! She will be deeply missed. She will always be our QUEEN!

Carla, you have made a beautiful tribute to our Little_Queen, Lori. Like you said, Lori spoke to me too in the past weeks of having another little Ruby reunion and she and I getting to meet. I would have loved that so much. But we all know we didn't have to personally meet Lori to love her and know what a kind, caring, inspirational person she was. We saw that in the things she did and said. She loved the Ruby team and we were all her Ruby-lite sisters. She fought a courageous battle. We know now she is in heaven and no longer suffering. Rest in peace my dear friend. Love you and I will always remember you and fondly.
