I got flowers and accolades!

Wednesday, February 15, 2012

My workplace had a re-grand opening as a business today since they totally gutted the building, made it a completely different workplace,, the whole city was there: radio stations, our local WNEM-tv television station, half the other businesses in the area too.. My boss is into lots of charities and civic foundations, so we were all getting our pictures taken. SHe made many donations and it was a great ribbon-cutting ceremony. One other woman and I were recognized and honored for being the original employees at the business even before this person was the boss!!
We were both surprised, we got bouquets, beautiful flowers.. a nice breakfast and I got paid to sit there and enjoy actually being recognized for my hard work.
She dedicated the business to her late mom, who encouraged her to start working in this business in 1972..

I cannot believe I had a wonderful day at work, barely did any work, but was a part of this new part of my boss and daughter's business. I also got to see a lot of people I have not worked with for about twenty ears,, a good day..

LINDA, I am so happy that you were given the recognition you obviously deserve, You never say what kind of business you are working in, I guess it must be a secret.
I felkt really good reading your blog, very few of your blogs talk about having a really nice day.Usually you have lots of hard work or doing things around your home, it was a treat to hear about your very good day. (((((HUGS))))) I am so happy for you.

happy Saint Valentine's Day!

Tuesday, February 14, 2012

If you know about this saint, you know why we celebrate this day,, if not go ahead and look it up! Do not fear:nobody will call you a smarty-pants!
I am relieved that I have finished filing my taxes,, two more weeks and I should get my refund.. no energy refunds from teh thousands of dollars I spent on my home.. the only way the government will give you any money for that is if you DO NOT OWE TheM ANY TAXES!!!!!!

I have never received a penny of $$ form them because I work full time, pay my bills, pay my taxes, try to bring my energy consumption up to date,, only poor people can get this rebate, or teh ones who owe $$ to the government. I just spent over $40,000 in energy home improvements in less than five years and am now eating it. Yet another propaganda tool to get people to spend on durable goods to keep the dough flowing...
lesson learned.. I have worked for 49 years... 42 of them paying in to MEdicare and Social Security.. cannot collect on MEdicare till my 66th BD!! 7 more yars..

woman near me never worked a day in her life, hubby either, she got her andlord to fix up her apartment, so guess who gets teh money?? She gets Medicaid(my social security), SSI, food stamps(my taxes), subsidized housing(my tax dollars yet again) and her taxi and dial-a-ride $$ reimbursed when she goes to the doctor(My tax dollars again),,
she got hundreds of $$ in rebates..

GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!!!

I am so with you. We have a lot of people milking the system and doing absolutely NOTHING for it. It frustrates me too Linda.

single digit temps

Sunday, February 12, 2012

Okay, so since last September we have been very happy that this winter was very mild, snow and temperature. Well, the rubber meets the road now. We had a blizzard and the temps dropped 29 degrees in 8 hours. I cannot complain about this yet because it is still a very strange and mild winter for this area which is usually subzero for months with feet of snow instead of none!
I am very glad I am taking that virtual trip to Bali....

It has been a weird winter. It is very cold here this weekend too. In fact it is the coldest night we have had this year, with wind we are well below zero. Hugs Pat in Maine. emoticon emoticon emoticon

Take advantage of that cold and freeze some bags of berries out on your patio and meat as well. I did that a while back. thawed my turkey outside on the deck for 3 days out of the freezer. :-)

utilities

Saturday, February 11, 2012

Our water bills are very inexpensive: water and sewer are billed separately, but water bill is about $13-$30 every three months ($4.30-$10/month), except in the April-June billing when we fill the pool. The sewer bill is $53.65 every three months. My electric and gas bill has the highest one this month of $159. I have a gas water heater, furnace clothes dryer. Everything else is electric.
We have done a lot of baking this winter, have desktop and laptop plugged in always, dishwasher, washer, three tv's, gaming systems, vcr/dvd player, cable box, garage freezer, ceiling fans, power tools recharging, lights, garage door opener. (pool filter, ceiling fans and central a/c in summer).

We did not use our dehumidifier in the basement this winter.. got to get that checked out first.
We unplug all small appliances when not in use, flourescent bulbs everywhere, I use the adjusted wash cycle on dishwasher, skip the heated dry cycle,, never run anything less than an extra large load in my washer and dryer. We hang and air dry lots of clothing...

I have a new water heater, stove, fridge, freezer, dishwasher and two pc's. low flow toilet in one bathroom and I wrapped my hot water pipes, added insulation to the ledge of my foundation in basement to conserve heat,, use the ceiling fans to distribute warm air down in winter and up in summer. even re-insulated around all of my electrical outlets on outside walls. New exterior doors, roof, windows, soffits, gutters, chimney cap, insulation in walls and attic. I do not know what else I can do to make this place more efficient except move to a newer home!!!
We keep our thermostat at 59-60 when we are home and awake,, 54-55 when we are gone or asleep. We wear layers of clothing all day and piles of blankets, quilts and comforters , flannel pj's and sheets on beds. We time our showers, batch cook and bake and have lined draperies and wood blinds to retain interior heat in spring, fall and winter; and air conditioning in summer.

Does anybody out there have any more suggestions? My funds are dwindling fast,, but know that investing in these measures will save me in the long run..

WOW! I seriously think you are doing everything possible to live efficiently! If more people worked half as hard as you in this than the world would be a much healthier, greener place. Well done!

LINDA, you are DEFINITELY a GREEN lady. Well done.!!!
You appear to have it all covered and all of it done by you, just be choosing to do it in the first place.
We are at the end of every pipe line. We are so far North we should be in Canada I think I am happy i am not. I like my health care here so here we stay.
Our food prices and gas prices are high because we have it shipped so far. they took up most of the rail lines and now they regret it.
So far we still have no Natural gas and we get most of our power from Canada. We were going have hydro but the out of state lobby nixed that years ago. It would have helped with all of our lakes and water. I hope i will see the day when the Ocean wind farm exists, I am excited about that

Our Sewer and water are very high but they are both state of the art systems and they are in the middle of replacing the entire infra-structure. We have very little industry here so most kids have to go out of state to get jobs.
We live in a beautiful fabulous place here in Maine and environmental protection is a big and expensive priority. HUGS Pat in Maine. You are doing a great job keeping you place efficient good for you!!((((((HUGS))))

You're doing excellent Linda. I'm learning from you so when I ahve a house of my own. You still ahve less bills than my own 2 bedroom apt. here in Oregon.

Early evening at dusk we light candles in the livable areas and cut the lights. It does help a bit i think.
