Veterans the day after..

Saturday, November 12, 2011

I have been supporting the paralyzed Vets for as long as I can remember. Just because yesterday was "their day" does not make me stop thinking of them the rest of the year. Self-sacrifice is the core of our humankind beliefs. IT is what we do to be part of a race:the human race. Only the last person on he planet does not have to sacrifice SOMETHING for another; a place in line, the lat cookie, money, thoughts, etc.
I walked out to my mailbox last night and realized that there is no mail just because somebody decided that it is a holiday for government workers because somebody else made the decision to put their needs and life up front for the rest of us.
I NEEDED THE EXERCISE, SO WAS GLAD I WALKED OUT THERE,, LOOKING AT THE STARS AS I WALKED BACK HOME.
I am thanking every military person for the other 364 days of the year...

I also appreciate all those who currently are in the military or have been in the military. War time or peace time. I am thankful for those who gave their lives, health and loved ones for our freedom.

I will admit - I hate war - don't want it to happen and want them ALL home. But, the President decides (and doesn't ask my opinion).

I am with you. This country of ours has made too many excuses to not work . Especially for Government workers. if congress worked longer we would get better resolutions.
If Congressmen and women were not given a free ride for the rest of their lives they would be better equiped to tackle the health care issue too.

I love my veggies!

Friday, November 11, 2011

We were so blessed to have so many fruits and veggies this year. We grew tomatoes, cukes, blackberries and raspberries. Anything more would have been too difficult for me after the surgery, so it worked out. I do have to adjust my "Squirreling instinct" of preparing and freezing lots of them though. My friends did not offer any string beans to me this year, so I had to compensate with canned ones on sale. I did freeze stuffed green peppers, huge ones, that DD hates, but oh well...
THe huckleberries that I picked in Paradise, are in the freezer, as well as soup stocks and meats that I cut up for various dishes this winter. The fresh salmon, steelhead, trout and venison from my Yooper friends really filled the whole bottom of my freezer, the basket!! I am blessed to be able to have this luxury appliance to save $$ in the long run. Today is baking and freezing cakes and cookies for later to take to friends.

I love my veggies, too. But sadly, I can't eat much fresh/raw veggies because of the texture of them. Everything ahs to be cooked.

LINDA You are a woman after my own heart.
I love to have my freezer stocked. I actually gave away our upright and bought a small chest freezer. Big mistake it is always too full and hard to manage but it is economical since the other was a self defrost, used too much power.
I always make planned overs and any chicken or ham bones become stock and put in to the freezer. I bake scones and muffins for DH, he loves to always have them on hand, he says they are his favorite food. DH loved Huckleberries, i am sure they are what we call BRAMBLES in England. He just loves Bramble pie. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticonPat in Maine.

Ohhhhh I should shop for thanksgiving, too. Or, I can jsut fly to spend it with you and escape this madness here. But then that would mean you would get to celebrate my birthday with me on thanksgiving. :-)
I knew you would be missed at work but do take your time going back there.

hunkering down for winter

Tuesday, November 08, 2011

We got our grill in the garage, covered our picnic table, scooped another two or three bushels of leaves off the pool cover, picked the last of the green tomatoes, yanked the plants, stored pots and other outdoor things. The worst time of year besides winter for me. IT is like waiting for death, to me.
Got another call from moms caregivers that she had some medical issues again yesterday.. a couple weeks ago it was another resident slapping her. I was actually sitting here paying her bills and balancing one of her checkbooks at the time. No rest for the wicked I guess... still have my sinus headache from those leaves...

Oh well! We can't stop the seasons from changing, so we have to make the best of it. Winter doesn't last forever, though and before you know it, it will be spring again! emoticon emoticon (and autumn down here! emoticon emoticon emoticon)

PS

How aweful! I can't believe someone slapped your mother!! emoticon I hope whoever did it got a firm talking to!! I wish you two all the best and may you both get better soon! emoticon

Linda, sorry you are in a very busy Rut. Do you think it will help when you are back at work or would you rather be at home for the winter.

Sorry about Moms situation, it seemed to have quieted down but upcoming holidays can bring a lot of memories and losses in to their memories. It does for me. HUGS Pat in Maine,
I am in your corner dear friend . Pat emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

It's already cold here. I'm in flannel jammies and a furry robe and i got me the coolest sheep skin slipers at Costco in Sept.
Hope your day is a fun one.

So sorry to hear about your mom. Linda. It is hard on both sides. They realize that they can't do what they've always been able to do, and that frustrates them while at the same time they don't want to be a burden. It frustrates us to see those who were our parents to become this way. Both of my parents became dependent on me in their last few years of life so I know what you are going through.

I know how much you despise winter. Yes, the cold and showvelling snow is a royal pain in the backside, but I think that nature has a naked beauty and sereneness during this time.

Do you have one of those solar lights? My DIL was stationed up in Alaska for4 years and she had one, and said it helped her out tremendously. I'm sure you could find one online.

Maybe you need to plan a winter vacation for some warmth!

Tough situation, for sure, with your own issues to deal with as well... But you are strong, and you have a whole lot of people in your corner, especially here on SP...

So sorry to hear about your Mother and her situation. I so identify with the feeling of never knowing what will be next. Both my parents are alive in their mid 80's. They live together about 2 miles away. I have to balance between leaving them with their independence and knowing that I need to get involved. I definately feel like roles are reversed and I don't like the feeling.

Having our parents become like children is not an easy thing.

Remember to give yourself some time towards your program for yourself. Yes, you can do it! Changing yourself IS like a death. A death of the part of you that cloaks you in death and despair.
