Every year I see people pack up their vehicles, trudge off to the expressway, have fun, enjoy the day off..
How many people actually know or even stop and think of what the day means???
Do they realize that 100 years ago, five and six year old kids were slave labor in factories, , no schooling, no bathrooms, no food or fresh air, sunlight, 12 hour shifts for everybody? Grease, oil, lint, water, all breathed in, for three fourths of one's life?
One day, 10,000 workers decided they had enough, after meeting secretly to unite(union) and show their group force to make industry notice and make changes. They went a long time without pay, some were beaten to death, maimed, , their families starved, because they had no wages, BUT these people stuck to it and after a long, hard row to hoe, they formed unions, made demands, and started to get rights for the people that made the rich people R-I_C_H!!!
Kids went back to school, inspectors and union officers made sure that businesses kept their word. Something we all take for granted today, clean, safe work environment, INDOOR BATHROOMS, ventilation, lights, vermin removal,etc.. a DAY OFF, not seven days a week jobs.
Parents should tell their kids that this is what the day is about: dignity and respect for your fellow man.
