We had a tornado touch down VERY close to October, a Saginaw, Michigan team member last night. I have not been able to catch the news to see what destruction it did, but everybody was hugging their basement walls last night!!

I hope everybody is safe today,, praying that October has a smooth surgery and recovery tomorrow..

We had a tornado run over us in Niles, MI, and it left a total mess. There were three little tornados that night, and we had some serious damage.

I hope your team member is doing well by now. We are under Tornado watch here in maine. Never remember that in the 40 plus years we have been here but they were reported in Northern Maine today.
Drove through a really bad wind and rain storm could barely see and the marble size hail I was truly scared of, I am so glad that has gone by but we are waiting for more.

Paralyzed Veterans

Tuesday, May 31, 2011

Something I think about a lot..

I have been financially, morally, prayerfully supporting the Paralyzed Veterans since I can remember. They gave of themselves, gave of their body and now must face their earthly life with what is left after they gave some more. If all I can do is give a pitifully small amount of cash to help with physical and mental services and care they need, then I will continue to do it until I am unable.
Until we are closely touched by war, (I have no close people in my life that are active military) we sometimes do not keep them in the forefront of our mind. I cannot keep the pictures of, ironically, Civil War pictures out of my mind, the piles of dead, the guys sitting in makeshift hospitals, with missing limbs and looks of death-wish on their faces.
For some odd reason, this is what spurred me to select a veteran's cause to support. Basically, veterans from WWII to present are benefitting from me viewing those Matthew Brady books! (I own many)
I find that very strange but serendipitous! emoticon emoticon

I give to support veterans and to paralyzed vets. At our local dollar tree we can add extra items to our check out to be sent to the troops and I always add a few extra. Our service people and there families put so much on the line for us to re main free emoticon

For 28 years of my working life I was an RN in a VA hospital. When people spoke of the "free" care the vets were receiving I always reminded the speaker that this was very expensive care and the bill was paid in advance by these wonderful veterans.

We were pleasantly surprised this morning:no rain or gale-force winds!! I did grocery shopping and came home, woke DD up and we did the coin toss yet again for lawn mowing:she chose mom's house. We then hauled pool stuff out of shed, took inventory of chemicals, uncovered a picnic table, I did my hose-sucking to siphon icky composty water off the pool cover,, ; was doing great until it started to rain awhile ago,, right back to square one!!
Perhaps we will take the over off tomorrow and hook things up,, ah, summer..

Technically, summer is here - the weather will improve, have faith, lol... As for us, yes, another cloudy / rainy day, so our picnic is an indoor one today. What the hey, it's the company and the food, not the location, thinks me--!

DD is opening her pool this weekend also. They have been trying for a couple of week to siphon the yucky water off their pool cover and then we would have another thunderstorm. Glad you got your grocery shopping done before the rain hit and the lawns mowed. Hopefully you will get the pool opened tomorrow!!
Happy Memorial Day!!

Yoopers, Trolls, De Island mon..

Thursday, May 26, 2011

I have never been to Mackinac (pronounced Mackinaw) Island and have no desire, but I will be in the Yoopee..

For you googlers, I will be starting out at Topinabee,(pronounced TOPinabee) in the Lower Peninsula, near Indian River, the home of the World's largest Crucifix. There is a a huge Shrine there and I make a pilgrimage every year or every trek I make up there,, I feel a big connection there, have been going since a baby... It is set in the woods, very quiet, serene, I meditate and pray for the day, the new church they built is made of wood, very big and modern, but still smells of freshly sawn wood years later.. I talk with the monks, watch the woodland critters,,

I rented a cabin at Woodlands Resort, very rustic with knotty pine inside,, just a quiet place to drop my hat, I will also be spending a day or two at Burt Lake state park while there, it is down the road .. ..start out there AUg 15-17.
Aug 17 I drive up over the Mackinac Bridge to Connie's house in Munising, home of The Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore,, waterfalls, mountains, Lake Superior, where I swim, hike, relax,, all of these places can be googled and are famous,, even my cabins are online,,.. stay at Connie's Aug 17-19. leave her place and drive anywhere I darned well please up there, , but especially Grand Marais,(Pronounces Ma-ray) a very upscale and beautiful little berg on Lake Superior, also part of the Pictured Rocks. Doing some hiking, agate hunting on the beaches there, then drive to Paradise to my other cabin at Harmon's Resort Until AUg 22,, will be at Tacquamenon Falls, both Upper and Lower falls, hiking, relaxing in the woods that have pine needle floors, very quiet with 80 foot high pine trees,, then to Whitefish Point, to rock pick on the beach, this is near where the Edmund Fitzgerald sank and I have been here more times than I can count, but not since the hubs, and DD and I went in 1985. They have a museum, lighthouses, water falls, etc,,

When I leave there, i will head back home to enjoy the pool and back to reality before going back to work,, not sure how long I will be off, depends on my sanity level when I ask for the time off..

I have lost amy urge to travel. DH just does not want to do it any more. I wish it was not so but I know it is. I just want to see our grandkids right now and this miserable weather cramps my style. Your trip sounds very well planned and just what you need. Good for you HUGS LINDA, from Pat in Maine. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Reading your post today brought back memories of our vacation last year. We (my husband and I and his parents for part of the trip) started out staying at a little motel in Topinabee. We did the river run from Burt Lake to Mullet Lake and did some fishing. Then we went from there to St Ignace and camped at Straits State Park. Its where my husband proposed, so we wanted to go back. We went to the falls, thats where my profile picture is from. Then we went to White Fish Point. It might be a little different then when you were there. There's not alot there, but it seems "commercial" for what is there. We didn't go to the island either. We have been though. I think its kind of over rated. The area is pretty, but there are too many people. Haven't been to Pictured Rocks either, but it is on the "list" of places to visit in the UP. There and Porcupine Mountain. One of these days or months or years emoticon

Anyhow, have fun on your vacation. The UP is for sure relaxing and there are many places to explore.

It sounds so wonderful! Just to do what you want, when you want, at the pace you want to do it. The woodland retreat sounds so peaceful. Are you taking pictures? I hope to get down to camp for a few days this summer and enjoy the peace there...on second thought there won't be much peace and quiet with 3 teen girls and a 7 yr,. old boy....LOL Have a wonderful trip!
