Rainy Monday again..

Monday, June 10, 2013

Yesterday DD and I went to the fruit market on our way home from walking the State park again. The swans are not near their nest, so we think for the second year in a row, their eggs did not hatch. We did not see that little mink again, but I saw some fish, we got a pic of some birds and a painted turtle sunning itself on a chunk of wood in the marsh near the weir.

The fruit market gave up some of their asparagus and green peppers and a couple cukes for us to take home.
His prices are very high in the past couple years and I normally buy most of my produce at Aldi's , BUT this week the sale items are all imported. That is why they are so cheap. LOok great, BUT as we all know, any produce from outside the U.S is sprayed with DDT, a cancer-causing agent. The cukes were from Costa Rica, the grapes from Chile, the scallions from Mexico.

We carefully checked everything out and ended up with nice lettuce and cauliflower form the U.S. The seedless watermelons were on sale, from Texas, but my fridge is not that big!!

We love produce so much, I tend to go overboard buying it..

We had nice salads last night, today is cleaning the asparagus, radishes and "brushing" the mushrooms before making my spaghetti sauce.

I like fresh produce too especially when it is local not only is it ripe but it is cheaper too.
Here in Vancouver our strawberries are appearing in our markets and you can smell
the ripeness..unlike those that are imported which unfortunately are picked before
they are ripe, so, very little flavour and quite hard.
I love the farmers markets too so much to choose from and all locally grown.Yum.. emoticon

It's such a relief to see the domestic grapes, cherries, and strawberries beginning to show up in the stores.

Feeling pretty good this morning.. Slept in until 8!! Was up late too, but took my meds, ate my Cheerios and nanner..
today is about dirt, shoveling and hedge trimming. We will move our grill up onto the deck. DD was patiently waiting until I waterproofed the deck ans the BBQ is under the tree nearby. It is very heavy, so it will get wrestled up onto the deck later,, she is itching to make patty melts on it for dinner. On onion rolls.
Ah! SUmmer

MIchigan has free fishing weekend today and tomorrow, so we are steering clear of the marsh and parks. There should be hundreds of kids out there now all over the place..

Early Friday!

Friday, June 07, 2013

I woke early this morning, woke DD up and we dressed and went to the Marsh for a long walk.. We did about 2 miles at the Marsh, then walked around the state park a bit. We had little success with animal pictures,,first trip we did not see a frog or turtle, no mink or deer, beavers or fish, but w did see the white herons flying over our heads, a few different birds following us from tree to tree as we walked.
We did notice that neither one of us got winded, did not need our inhalers this trip, we did sit a few times only to cool off in the shade.

I am determinded to work in the yard this week,, not today, haha!! i just got out of work, showered, went through my mail, some of mom's bills, paid a few, , ate breakfast. I am supposed to meet with my ccousin from Sand Point(near Pigeon,MI) while she is in Saginaw, about ten miles from here. SHe has a class at teh University where I graduated, tehn is to talk with a profesor, so I will wait for her at Hunan, a great Chinese place near there.

I havee about eight bags of organic soil to split and shovel into my berries. I have decided against a garden. My arthritis and fibromyalgia are taking atoll on how I am able to move now. I can walk for hours , but bending and lifting are verboten!!

I had grand plans of a a garden where the pool was, but now cannot afford to pay somebody to till it and then the plants and caring for it all summer,, We will be gone for a week right about harvest time, so I will just go for the deals at the fruit market. I may do some canning, but I am starting to (DUH!) realize that I am no longer 20 years old and able to go from pre-dawn until midnight anymore. Caring for dad's house and ours, has become more work as time goes by. DD is now with my ex again at dad's house to unload dad's lawn mower and I am sure, mowing that acre and a half of backyard grass.
I am slowly coming to realize that I can't actually do things just because I WANT to do them... IT is depressing, painful and just plain reality. There is a big difference between giving up and recognizing one's limitations. It is ahard fact to swallow, but I still try to do things I know in my heart are physically impossible ever again. Not that I am a stubborn German/Scotch/French old lady or anything!!!

If wishin' were gittin' we'd all be millionaires!
