Frigid , snowy Saturday

Saturday, January 26, 2013

The frigid temps prevail, lots more snow this morning. We have errands to run today,, just around town.. I would not chance going up north since I hate having to brake for deer on the expressway. They will run right up to the shoulder of the road, stop,, tick-tock, you are about one block away and they suddenly jump out onto the roadway like your headlights are a sign for free salt licks!!!!

I have only hit one deer, but it had already been hit by the motor home ahead of me,, so awful to do...

This does not mean that we are any safer while driving within five miles of our home. The wild animals behind the wheel are worse than four legged beautiful animals. You would think we lived in Arizona the way they drive.. I mean, they act like it is warm, no snow or ice on teh roads, clear, sunny day.
They should sell tanks for us to drive during winter months,,
DD is still asleep, I have dishwasher to load, papers to sort, tax things to organize for mom's and my income tax appointments.
I dread going outdoors later this morning, but the mama bear needs to leave the cave...

My son hit an 8 point buck about 12 years ago in a tank of a vehicle, '85 BMW 535, and the impact pushed the whole engine compartment back 4 inches. This happened within 2 miles of our house. You're right about them waiting to jump right out in front of you.

People down here drive just as stupidly in the rain /fog as they did in the snow when I was in Illinois! Be careful out there!

OK, so a deer would bother me. It would damage my car.

But there is a commercial on now that says "we are remembering our driver training ... we're breaking for squirrels ..." Ummmm, no. They are just lucky I don't speed up.

LINDA.You kind of sound like me. I really would love to be in a warm place but I cannot imagine any place better than here. We have looked to the south and there are just too many people out there. I like our slow paced life here. I do not to want to drive on six lane highways anywhere.
I like 2 lane highways 2 on each side because I do not like to drive too slow. Take care and hopefully stay warm HUGS Pat in Maine.

We are up to 20 degrees because the ocean breezes are warming our Atlantic coast.(DREAMING?) Hugs and love you Pat in Maine. emoticon emoticon emoticon

Greetings from the land of mammalian assault via motor vehicle. My tally to date: two deer, one cow and assorted smallish varmints of the field and forests (gradually, over the last 15 years or so). You might really be onto something with the salt lick concept.

Blizzards, boxes and bugging people.

Friday, January 25, 2013

We are in the throes of a major blizzard here today, more snow to come tonight and tomorrow. It is the teensy little greasy flakes that are VERY slippery to walk or drive on. I slid right past my street on the way home from work!! I was the only one on the road , thank God,, my traction control and ABS went into overtime but to no avail... I kept sliding down the street, so just went with the flow of the slippery road about a quarter mile, turned onto another street and came back to mine.
I was only going about 15 mph, but he snow propelled me a long ways. I have state-of- the-art braking system, but as my Dad used to say, "It was like peeing in the wind!" NO use...

I came home for about fifteen minutes, long enough to seal and address a box I had to ship to Chicago today. I got back in my car, drove the three miles to the post office and came back home.. The streets were twice as slippery as a half hour before...

I made it onto my street this time, BUT did a doughnut when I turned off the main street!! That drivers training 45 years ago really paid off: I just took my hands off the wheel, foot off the gas and brake, and let my guy do his thing!! He straightened himself out and stopped all alone. Nobody around again because nobody else is dumb enough to BE on the road. I had to ship that box today since the postage goes up again this weekend.

I have enough FOREVER stamps to mail the space shuttle to Mars, but can hardly ship a box from home...

I called assisted living and it seems Mom is magically better today!! I talked to the director last night and told her to tell Mom that if she did not get up out of bed, I would be out there in an hour. She got up, ate, drank fluids,,,,Today she is up walking around, watching tv in the den,etc.. I am thinking of telling this miraculous story to the Pope!!
For some odd reason, she does whatever they tell her if they say I told them to do it...
fear is a powerful weapon,, even though I have no clue why she is afraid!! She is the abusive one, I just look at her..
Oh well whatever works.. emoticon

Glad you made it home safe and sound. That's really scary when we've driven all our life in snow, and suddenly you find yourself in a situation you have absolutely no control over.
So glad your mom is up and about - truly amazing! She probably realizes where you are coming from, and doesn't want to push her luck any further . . .

Maybe, your mom just likes the snow.

Seriously, they have good days and bad ones and you never know when the next flip is coming. Take every day as they come.

And be careful driving in the snow.

Good to hear that your Mom is adjusting.
It is Funny, my Mom gets along MUCH Better with me than with my Sister, but when ever Sis is having trouble getting Mom to do something, she says "I'll just call Jeannie and have her deal with this." Magically, Mom is suddenly able to do whatever the task at hand is, LOL! Go Figure!!

I had never driven in icy weather till Maine and boy you have to learn fast.

I hope the blizzard goes north instead of east. Hoping you and DD are much better by now. Thanks for the wise comments, hugs Pat

I loved that bit about enough forever stamps...I write a lot of letters to people I've come to know during my mission trips to Peru...so of course one needs "regular" postage.

Glad your Mom is doing better. I go to a little old lady who just recently moved into a senior assisted living center, and she's having a hard time adjusting. We become stodgy in our old age.

Blessings on your journey to good health. Glad you made it thru the nasty weather!

We are getting somewhat back to normal DD and I.. I made a small pot of goulash last night, we went to my birthday dinner today for lunch. I chose Famous Dave's.. We were fairly good girls.. I ordered steamed broccoli and coleslaw for the sides, we had corn on the cob, ribs, pulled pork, roasted chicken. It is a platter family style.. We brought more food home than we ate there.. Muffins, chicken, slaw, broccoli, pulled pork, corn. I love leftovers so I do not have to cook!!

Just walked in the door and moms home called to say she has no output today and won't get out of bed. I am not allowed to visit, so I told them to tell her that I order them to get her up in the wheelchair if she is too weak to use her walker, get her to drink anything,, since she has been on Keflex since Saturday, I know she just needs to get up and at 'em.

I am hoping they will lift the visiting ban by the weekend so I can get her moving myself.. she has led a princess's life with no illness or inconvenience, so any little thing that requires any effort from her is devastating to her.. Tuff noogies...
DD calls me the drill sergeant and I intend to review the troops this weekend.. yes, I am feeling better,,
My mother would die if she ever had to endure the pain Dd and I do on a daily basis, I have zero patience for her laziness and she knows it,,she usually gets up and doing what I tell them to make her do, before I even get there..

I am Happy to hear you are both doing better.
I was happy to read you were able to go to your Belated Birthday dinner. Sounds like a lot of food, so you can be well fed and able to take it a bit easier.
We too have the big chill here in Maine. It should move out by the weekend. It will probably warm up to snow by the weekend.
I feel sure your MOM will be behaving herself once she knows you are out to make her see a little sense. I hope so. Take care, Pat in Maine.

Mmmmm sounds like a great birthday treat and the best part is the leftovers and no cooking on your part!

Glad you are getting back to "normal".

My step-dad has been in the hospital for congestive heart failure and could use a good drill sarge. Wanna volunteer? He thinks he has to do the opposite of whatever he is told.

When you re ill, the hours creep by, when you are kicking up your heels , they just fly by!! I had to return to work today, my body feels like my weight doubled overnight,, every limb feels like weight are attached to them, the whole body is fatigued over and above the fibro and arthritis.
I was fortunate that I came in later to work, but I also had less tasks to complete. Tomorrow will be better, I am blessed to have heat and food, a warm shower.
temp was twenty three below zero this morning, now it is only seven below. That is wind chill,, it is bitter blowing off those lakes. I will be very afraid to open my utility bill next month.. That is scarier than waiting for my cat scan results...

We did see sunshine yesterday for about five hours!!! none today.. it is so bitter cold that we do not dare to spill any liquid either in our garage or yard.. It actually freezes on teh way down!!

God willing, we are going to attempt to go out for my belated birthday dinner tomorrow. I need to go to the post office tomorrow too,to ship a package to Chicago and get some additional FOREVER stamps before the price goes up this weekend.

another day off...

Tuesday, January 22, 2013

Boss called form work last night as I was getting into bed, to tell me that I was to stay home today because of their policy of no working within 24 hours of barfing. It helped me because what I have is total body aches and fatigue, This sounds like the easy way out to anybody who does not already have arthritis and fibromyalgia.

Believe it or not,we had to get up and go out to get important things from Walgreens and through the drive through at our credit union today!! We both feel like we did a 10K marathona dn then a triatholon!!! I am heaed off to bed. it is 2 pm, DD is already there..
