Barf-free birthday!

Sunday, January 20, 2013

DD is feeling better today! No more barfing, she actually kept some chicken broth down, is awaiting the jelling of the raspberry jello I made earlier. I feel very tired, but my workplace just called and asked me if I could stay 3 1/2 hours later tomorrow. I am putzing around here after getting groceries for DD this morning. Chores and got a BD phone call from older sister downstate.
Yesterday, in the throes of DD worshiping the porcelain altar, moms assisted living called to say she d=needed to go to the E.R as she had been coughing all week and was worse. This time they did not wait until i was going to bed, BUT I told them that I absolutely would NOT go there in case I am a carrier of this flu of DD's.. Nurse was shocked that I would not be with my mother, disregarding the implications of me going to the 20 bed house where she lives, passing to them, then the staff and patients and visitors at the hospital!!
I kept pointing out that since nobody had been in the house since they quarantined it, somebody that works there had to be the one passing to the residents.. Nobody else had any contact with any of them!!
I told her to have everybody call me at home,, I refused to infect anybody. She still did not comprehend what I was trying to prevent!!!!!! I asked her how she would like it if everybody there not only had URI's, but vomiting and diarrhea, high temps, dehydration????
Do I hear a DUH??

Mom went to the hospital via ambulance basic transport, they did whatever, x-rays and blood work I imagine, they gave her a Rx for Keflex , sent her back to the home.. She has bronchitis,, one lobe is clear, one is crackling..

Car problems will have to wait, just left voice mail to cancel mechanic appointment tomorrow morning.. will be working later now...

No birthday dinner, but chores and a phone call, my potato soup are okay for me. My best gift today is Kristy feeling better!! Happy Birthday to me!!!

    Happy Birthday indeed.

Thank you for exercising your common sense and staying home. Even out here in the woods we know the flu has reached epidemic proportions.

You are so smart staying away. I am amaze at the differences in hospitals and other facilities with managed care.
Our local hospital is being replaced but that is 18 months down the road meanwhile our local hospital does not seem to be complying with electronic records and with good safe hygiene.

They could not connect to DH PC and much of his other questions were not answered I am not happy about that.
I am so glad I went the 70 miles because that hospital had a woman handing bottles of sanitiser to clean there hands as you stepped of the elevator. There were sanitizers everywhere. and if you coughed you were told not to use your hand and to look for the sanitizers EVERY WHERE.
I was so impressed and my hands are totally dried out but I feel sure I kept m y germs to myself/.
I forgot your birthday and our Grandsons too, I was so sure I would be reminded of your because of his. How after DH wakes up we will call Plattsburgh NY to wish him the best and apologizing for our bad memories.
Sorry you have both been under the weather, hopefully this week will be very much better all round. Thanks LINDA. Pat In Maine. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Happy Birthday! So glad that DD is barf-free!

Hm, 20 elderly people with vomiting/diarrhea/etc...? Next time try asking her if she wants half of her residents to perish! I used to work in a nursing home...that was my first job actually, and there a LOT of ignorant/uncaring/uneducated people that work there!
In my CNA classes we were even tested on proper handwashing techniques along with a TON of other things that seem to be common sense. Unfortunately, many who work in that environment do not get good/proper training.

I hope your mom gets over her current ailment and that the mechanic doesn't stick it to ya!

I hope tomorrow is a better day and maybe you can have a birthday dinner in a day or two. Good positive outlook and definately good to avoid spreading flu to a nursing home. That can be very bad for them. Happy birthday!

Having some pc probs this morning, spent an hour trying to get anything to work on sparks..
DD still tossing cookies, hot and cold flashes, very tired, etc.. I am very glad she got the flu shot or this would be E.R. status..
today I will do the chores myself, let her rest and make her clear liquids.
We were both so cold last night that I actually turned the thermostat up to 62 degrees!! have not had it that high since ex hub would have it on 80 degrees in the 80's!!
I turned it back down to 55 for sleeping, still have it down that far now..

I have now been on my diabetes med for three weeks, do not really notice any difference in anything.. I do not know if i am supposed to feel different or better or what..

are you checking your FBS in the morning as soon as you rise? You should see a difference. If it's between 80-120 you're good to go.

I don't sleep with any heaters on they get turned off at night. I turn them on first thing in the am

Hoping K gets better soon.

Whether you feel better or not depends on if you could tell if your sugar was high before. I can tell if it is really high but not moderately high.

Friday, cold Friday.

Friday, January 18, 2013

It is very cold, very windy, snowing occasionally, but such a bitter wind that everybody I have come into contact with is chilled to the bone,,even big, husky guys!! I think our furnace is going to spike up to 60 degrees here!!

On that note, I will respond to yesterdays comments..
The quinoa(keen-wa) I bought is from the health food store, came from bulk , is white, had no directions on teh clear plastic tub,so I have no idea how to cook it.. realized that after I went to bed last night.. Like rice??,, How much water?? Does it double like rice or triple??
As far as the kale, I bought it once, raw, just tossed it in some crock pot vegetable beef soup i was making.. halfway through.. Dd had added some, but not enough to actually SEE with the naked eye. so I added a lot more..It tastes exactly like spinach,,, I imagine it is from the same family(Or is a kissin' cuzzin')..

Dd and I made the rounds today at the credit union, dad's house to pick up mail, was going to go through the car wash at the dealership, but they had the garage car wash door down, indicating that it is either too cold and doors and door locks would freeze shut, or it is in need of repair,, I am guessing the latter,, my car thermometer read ICE, then shot up to 20 degrees for an hour.. Still no sunlight..
More boxing things up tomorrow and going to dad's house to wash and dry stuffed animals, take my wedding dress back there..
Sunday is my BD and I plan on nothing except DD taking me to dinner.. and some exercise of course...
it will be the 39th anniversary of my 21st birthday!!! I love anniversaries!!

    Have a wonderful birthday celebration.
Quinoa is one of my favorite grains. One wonderful thing to do with it is to cook it a little on the dry side and use it for a salad or pilaf.

I get boxed from the store so it is already rinsed off. You might want to look online for more information. Google search is our friend!

Also yes, it is like rice, double the liquid and it multiplies as it sucks in the juice.
keep an eye on it so liquid doesn't run dry.
The little seeds kind of pop open so you can tell when it is done.
If underdone will be a little crunchy.

Thursday's Thought

Thursday, January 17, 2013

I just watched spark coach Becky talking about introducing more whole grains into our diet.. I bought some quinoa and still have not cooked it.. M one goal this weekend is to find a healthy recipe and make that grain with SOME veggie..
I already switched from white to brown rice, from white to whole grain bread, but have limited my bread intake to twice weekly, try one new food each week when I shop.. Kale was a bonus find!!

Quinoa and I don't see eye-to-eye, but I fix it sometimes because Himself loves it. Re kale - oh, that's one of my favorites! We have it at least once a week...
[I don't think that's kale, but we'll pretend it is, lol!]

I have a neighbor that's served it a couple of times when we've been invited for dinner. She makes it into a pilaf, much like a rice pilaf. Very tasty! What did you do with the kale? I have a good recipe for Kale soup.

If you cook white quinoa it is pretty mild flavoured and will take on the flavor of whatever you make with it (add chix or beef broth or whatever).

You can make up some plain and eat it for breakfast just like you would oatmeal with maple syrup or cinnamon.

I like a quinoa dip. Cook it up, let it cool and add some salsa, garlic, spices, i served it with corn chips for holidays. (had to get past the guys saying it looked like worms). ROFLOL

And good as a side dish or in soups in place of potatoes or noodles.

The red variety has a little nuttier flavor.

What a coincidence. I bought some quinoa today as well -- first time ever. My husband insists on pronouncing it wrong, but he is willing to try it.
I saw a stew recipe with it and thought I would try it first that way.

Here's one of my favorite quinoa recipes.
I cook mine with Half low sodium chicken broth and half water r better flavor. Cook it according to the backage ad amake a salad containing vegetables of your choice:
I love prepared kale chips that have been sauteed in olive oil and garlic powder
chopped up tomatoes
peeled and chopped cucumber
any veggies you like even brocolli and cauliflower and add the quinoa
You can add a dressing or eat it plain it's good and the Quinoa is a full Protein

A warmer day today;; 20 degrees, no snow or sleet or rain.. it did get dark at four p.m. though.. I barely made it home from my oil change and it was dark. Hard day at work today, but sure did burn a LOT of calories.. moving fast is okay, but I am always hot at work and everybody else is so cold. With my next BD coming up, it will not make me any cooler than them,, old age has a way of amping up the antifreeze in me!!

I ordered some DVD's online last weekend and they arrived yesterday,, on my porch,, I almost stepped on them when I went out in the dark(five p.m.) to get the mail!! They are some of my favorites and I love them!!

Got some more snow coming tomorrow and Friday,, to cover the ice on the road now.. Happy motoring!!

Heh! Its the opposite at my work! I keep my door open in the summer and sit on top of my little heater in the winter...along with them running the furnace. If I am not moving, I am always freezing cold. Bonus is that people don't come in to my office to bother me much because its rather warm in here...bad news is that they don't come in to chit chat either and I get lonely!
