My first 26.2...done!
I traveled to Florida over Thanksgiving weekend to run the Space Coast Marathon with many of my running buddies, including a handful of Sparkers. It was quite the experience! I'm admit it, I was quite nervous during the race, and in the last 6-7 miles and the couple of hours after, I wondered what on earth I had done to myself! But, in the end, I'm incredibly proud and glad that I did this. And I'm definitely on board with doing more in the future. Here are links to the race recap, in two parts.
The day before:
I did it! I'm a MARATHONER!

Howdy...it's been a while since I've written a SparkPeople post, but I'm still in the land of the living. I am blogging daily over at onegoofymotherrunner.blogspot.com, but can get a bit lazy about copying my posts over to this site. Forgive me :)
What's up with me...
Going on this post title, I am now just under two weeks away from my first full marathon, Space Coast on November 27! I have been training very carefully and conservatively for it, and finished my very last long run, 23.2 miles, over the weekend:
I had been feeling quite nervous about my ability to complete such a distance, not so much because of the physical challenge, but more because of the mental demands. During my 23 miler, my biggest obstacle, surprisingly was BOREDOM! I can definitely see why people often tackle marathon training in groups, since at least that gives them people to talk to! Hopefully this won't be such an issue with the race itself, though, since I'll have a nice change of scenery (the beach!!) and lots of running companions. Although I'm keeping a completely open mind about future plans, I can definitely see that marathon training isn't something I'll do terribly often, maybe just once a year, if that. (Given the right circumstances, my mind could always be changed...but I'm thinking the half is generally going to be my favored distance.)
Space Coast is my last organized race of 2011, but then I'll be kicking of 2012 with a big bang, Goofy's Race and a Half Challenge at Disney World! After Goofy, I'll be laying sort of low for a while, but I have a handful of half marathons and a sprint triathlon picked out for 2012. I have all but retired from the 5K/10K business, other than the occasional Disney one or if my friends are running one. They're just not my scene.
I've gotten a little lazy with food tracking and making good nutrition-related choices, but I'm getting back into tracking my food (yet again) and hopefully that will do the trick.
Other than that, work is keeping me quite busy right now, but hopefully I'll get a nice break in the action in time for the holidays and all of my big racing plans!

I've been laying low on SP for a while...life has been crazy busy and way too much has been going on. But I'm still at it with my running, as usual! This weekend, I ran my 11th half marathon and final half of 2011, the Haunted Hustle Half Marathon in Middleton. This was the very race which qualified me for Half Fanatics this time last year. I had the pleasure of running with Spark buddies Laurie, Emily, and Elsa (who qualified herself for HF with this race!! YAY!) and it was amazing! It was my slowest half marathon on record, but such a special one because it allowed me to celebrate the running friendships which mean so much to me. And next up...my last race of 2011 and first ever FULL marathon, Space Coast Marathon on November 27! I'm nervous as anything, but also know that I'm going into it well-prepared and ready to go...so GAME ON!

Friday night, I encountered something I hadn't experienced in quite a while, honest-to-goodness, full-blown pre-race-day jitters! I've run many 5K, a couple of 10K, and plenty of half marathons, but when faced with my first-ever group bike ride, I'm about as frightened and self-conscious as I was the night before my first 5K. Would I look like a total poser among all the "real" cyclists? I took a training run to burn off some steam, but many of those lingering "whatifs" remained. Ah, the great unknown!

Getting caught up on training blogs post-Disney. It definitely has felt a bit strange to transition back from the magic of Disney World to ordinary run-of-the-mill Wisconsin LOL! Thankfully the weather has been absolutely dreamy this week, so that's made it a lot easier. It is a bit bizarre to have 70-80 degree weather and see the leaves changing colors though. We did make it home in one piece, although Timmy had a bit of a painful mishap in the airport parking lot (he's fine though). I am now shifting gears more towards marathon training, although I've been gradually moving in that direction over the last couple of weeks. I am running Space Coast 26.2 in late November, and that will serve as a training run for January 2012...very SCARED but excited! Thursday night, I enjoyed a typical weeknight run, 5.5 miles around my usual stomping grounds.
