Project Pixie Dust: Day 93 02-14-11

*** Faith, trust, and pixie dust ***

I guess I should say...Happy Valentine's Day! Since it is, and all. My husband and I have never really gotten big into V Day, just not our style, but I still enjoy it as an excuse to eat just a bit of extra chocolate. And my wonderful employer supplied me with a small box of handmade truffles from a local chocolatier this morning...a nice little consolation for putting me on call this week, I suppose! I will shamefully admit that I devoured all four truffles within an hour of receiving the box. Well, at least it wasn't four minutes flat, right? And we aren't talking a pound of chocolate either. It was just the pick-me-up I needed this morning too. I woke up feeling really woozy and beyond tired, as if the single dose of Nyquil I took twelve hours ago had not yet worn off! I was crazy tired for the first few hours of the day.

I'm still definitely in the grips of my winter cruddies. I felt all right after work, so set out to do a typical twenty-minute Pilates/strength training workout, followed by a little bit of aerobics. Well, what do you know, after the Pilates bit, I was exhausted! I mean completely WIPED! So, rather grudgingly, I flopped on the couch and gave my body another rest day. It's crazy, even when I know that the best thing for my body is REST, I still feel like such a lazy lump if I'm not working out. I have to consciously remind myself that it's OK to take a day off, and *gasp* even miss an occasional workout on my training plan. That struggle is just one lovely facet of my beastly perfectionism. In any event, I was able to settle in with some good music and computer games, and all was well.

Oh, and that pager I got from work? I hesitate to use the Q-word (quiet) because if I do, inevitably calling it the Q-word sets it on fire, and I'll be drowning in work from now until I turn it back in on Friday morning. So let's just say so far, so good. No calls yet. I hope it remains that way overnight so I can get some good rest!

Drink my water, 64+ ounces: DONE (66 days running)!

Eat five servings of fruits and veggies: DONE (44 days running)!

You bite it, you write it: DONE (3 days running)!

Eat mindfully all day and night: I give myself a C+ today. Not great, not bad either. I had the aforementioned chocolates, as well as two sugar cookies. I didn't have nutritional information on either, but took my best guess in my tracker by picking items which were similar to what I actually ate. I did hit my water, fruits, and veggies, so that's good, and stayed within my limit. All in all, in spite of all the Valentine's Day sweets, NOT a bad day!

Running: Day off, and I suspect that tomorrow, even though I'm scheduled on, it may be another day off. Even though it may not need to be another rest day, I'll probably just stick to gentle cross training and let my body do the recovering it needs to.

Cross Training: None today, as the planned aerobics workout didn't pan out.

On my way to DISNEY WORLD! 187.49 miles complete, 1102.51 to go (1290 total)

Strength Training: I did twenty minutes of Pilates exercises for lower body. And that finished me for the night!

Very uneventful day for the most part! Packed another box, and I think our box count is up to 15 or 16 now. Maybe if I get ambitious tomorrow night, I'll do another one. Slowly but surely our possessions are getting organized and staged for the big move. Another big task we have to accomplish is to clean up the apartment so it's move out inspection-ready. Scrubbing, mopping, vacuuming, YAY. It's not like we never do that stuff, but we're trying to get the place as squeaky clean as possible, so the landlord has as few excuses as possible to take anything out of our security deposit. How I detest heavy-duty cleaning though...but it's worth it.

Country Music Half Marathon 6.3 02-13-11

Sunday, February 13, 2011

I was supposed to do three miles today, and it would have been outside for the first time in 2011...but sadly, it didn't happen. I was feeling so sick and weak from this mystery (possibly strep...?) illness that I would have barely made it to the end of the block. So sad about this because the sun looked so brilliant and shiny, the snow was melting, and it was a balmy 48 degrees! Hopefully with spring on its way, there will be more and more opportunities to run outdoors in the coming weeks, though. And I still add to my CMHM training total since I got two nice brisk walks in between Thursday's training run and today. So yay! Next time I train, I'll roll over 100 miles. Very exciting!

My planned Tuesday/Thursday training runs may be shuffled around or cancelled outright due to me being on call (and never knowing when the pager will summon me to work) and the uncertain path of this sickness. Next Sunday I am scheduled for eight miles, and I fully expect that I'll be good to go by then!

Total CMHM Training Mileage: 99.32

Project Pixie Dust: Day 92 02-13-11

Sunday, February 13, 2011

*** Faith, trust, and pixie dust ***

So it seems that the mystery illness has me in its death grip...woke up with a sore throat, and I thought that was kind of it, but once I got up to make breakfast I realized I was a bit achy and weak...a lot achy and weak. My legs felt like spaghetti, and after putting in a load of laundry and packing one measly box, I was ready to get back to bed. I knew by nine-thirty that I wouldn't be doing my scheduled training run today. And a shame that was, because today we had a high of 48 degrees and it was sunny! I would have been running outside, and instead I was so tired and weak that all I could really do was "rest" on the couch and wrap up knicknacks, pictures, and coffee mugs. Just my luck! The only thing I can hope is that Punxsutawney Phil (yes, I had to Google that spelling) was right about an early spring and that I'll have lots of outdoor running opportunities coming up! For a rest day, though, I was fairly productive, and got four loads of laundry done, and our pile of packed boxes is at 13.75, will be at 14 by the time I head to bed.

We also took a little drive out to our new house again, just to peek at it, and Target and McDonald's were conveniently along our route. Really, we were just stir-crazy and looking for an excuse to get out of the apartment for a bit and catch some sunshine! It was fun to see our cute little house - at least from the outside - again. And, at McDonald's we enjoyed a little afternoon snack and let Timmy burn off a little steam on the PlayPlace. It was nice to see the mountains of snow melting and the grass peaking out from the edges...spring is coming!

It's going to be a looooong work week. I work as normal and am on call, after hours, so essentially, to me, it will feel like I'm at work 24 hours a day! (Luckily I can sleep through parts of it.) My biggest fear about the mystery illness is that, if I lose my voice completely, which tends to happen when I get upper respiratory-type illnesses, I won't be able to talk on the phone if someone calls me. Yeesh. Let's just hope that doesn't happen. And/or that nobody tries to call me after hours...that would be even cooler. And then next week, I'm off to Sacramento for work, for four nights. It's just go, go, go until closing day! That's why we started our packing now.

Drink my water, 64+ ounces: DONE (65 days running)!

Eat five servings of fruits and veggies: DONE (43 days running)!

You bite it, you write it: DONE (2 days running)!

Eat mindfully all day and night: I give myself a B- today. Breakfast was light because I was feeling queasy and blech. Lunch was bland comfort food - mac 'n' cheese - and maybe a little too much of it. Afternoon snack at McDonald's, kept it pretty small. For dinner, we had some leftover shredded chicken in the form of barbeque, with pasta and broccoli. A nice soothing bowl of rice pudding for dessert. Stayed within my limits, but feel kind of eh about my lunch and afternoon snack. All in all, not bad though.

Running: I had to call off today's run. There is no way I could have done it without collapsing. It was just a three mile run, so not a great loss, although I would have loved to go running outside! Maybe next week?

Cross Training: None today...

On my way to DISNEY WORLD! 187.49 miles complete, 1102.51 to go (1290 total)

Strength Training: It was my usual day off from ST, so I didn't do any, and wouldn't have anyway...

And that's my Sunday. I hope tomorrow brings improving health into my home! It seems like we've ALL been sick within a week and a half of each other. Ugh. Just no fun. I hate this time of year! I'm going to make a cup of herbal tea to soothe my throat, relax with a book or some TV, and head off to bed to rest up for my busy week. Until later...

Project Pixie Dust: Day 91 02-12-11

*** Faith, trust, and pixie dust ***

Wow, so it's hitting me today that we are exactly one month out from our moving date. We actually close on March 4 which is (eek) just three weeks away, but we're not actually going to shove all of our stuff into a truck and drive it over there until a week after that...mainly because the logistics of moving on March 4/5 didn't quite come together right for us. In any event, it's really going to sneak up on us, I know, especially since I'll be away for almost a week of that time for a business trip! Today we hauled all of our boxes out of the storage unit so we can slowly start packing stuff away. It feels a bit silly on one level to be packing so early, but I don't want to get to March 11 and find out that I have to get everything into boxes within 24 hours. So we're starting now, so we have time to do a good job!

Besides grocery shopping and dragging out boxes and old newspapers, I got some nice workouts in: making up all my strength training, walking at the gym, and a little aerobics before bed. The only bad news is that I think I may be coming down with something, and I hope to heaven that it isn't Bruce's strep throat...what a Valentine's Day gift that would be, eh? I have a bit of a sore throat and was seriously dragging by the end of the day. Hopefully just a false alarm...I hope.

Notice that I have added a new tracking item to my posts, which is for logging all of my food into SparkPeople. Even if I have a crummy day, I want to be at least writing it down for accountability and to allow myself to look at what my eating habits are doing over time. So here goes nothing!

Drink my water, 64+ ounces: DONE (64 days running)!

Eat five servings of fruits and veggies: DONE (42 days running)!

You bite it, you write it: DONE (1 day running)!

Eat mindfully all day and night: I give myself a B+ today. Opening up the tracker again motivated me to think about my decisions a little more. We did have lunch at Taco Bell, but that didn't completely mess up my day, and I stayed comfortably within my calorie (and other) limits. Not a bad start!

Running: No running today, but I'm supposed to go tomorrow...however, if this sore throat and fatigue is brewing into a real illness, I may have to call it off. Pft.

Cross Training: Treadmill time with Cupcake Wars! Wow, was that a site for sore eyes! I have not seen that show in forever...luckily most of the cupcakes didn't look all that appetizing to me, so it didn't motivate me into a Valentine's Day related cake binge. Whew. It was interesting to watch, for sure. I ended up walking 4.28 miles at a comfortably brisk pace, with a few hills thrown in for good measure. In the evening, I did some aerobics too, but cut the workout a bit short to 43 minutes because I was starting to feel SUPER tired. Total's virtual mileage total is 7.15.

On my way to DISNEY WORLD! 187.49 miles complete, 1102.51 to go (1290 total)

Strength Training: I kept going and going and going with this - finished up my core workout (first because I hate it and wanted to get it over with!) and my upper and lower body stuff. Maybe my fatigue is just because I burned myself out?! For some reason, early in the day I just had all this crazy energy I didn't know what to do with...?

Tomorrow will probably just be an easy-ish day. We may drive out to the new house just to look at it. I'll admit somewhat shamefully that I visit its listing on Trulia every day, or just about, to look through the pictures of it and daydream about what I want to do with each room. Crazy, right?! And of course, in the next few weeks I have to figure out how to get to it. Even though we've been out there a few times now, I still have no clue how to drive there if someone were to ask for directions. I may even need the trusty old GPS the first few times I commute so I don't get lost. Well, I never did pretend to have a good sense of direction, so I'm not that surprised! Other than that, I'll play it by ear. If I'm under the weather, I'll probaby just sit around on the couch, play on the computer, maybe wrap up a few knicknacks...oh and do a little laundry because the dirty laundry pile is taking over our bedroom!

Oh and I've about 95% decided to do the Madison Half on Memorial Day weekend, as a birthday present to myself. I just can't help myself!

Country Music Half Marathon 6.2 02-10-11

Today I was slated for a three miler, and decided to put a fun new spin on it. SparkPeople has started offering virtual 5k races, where you can sign up, run a 5k course of your choice at a time of your choosing (within a given week), register your time, and earn a new Spark trophy. This was their first week - at least that I knew about - and I decided to give it a spin. Nothing quite like a race, even if it's a small virtual one, to light a fire under you! And I chose tonight's run as my race day. So...although I headed to the gym for a treadmill run just like any other night, but had a feeling that "competing" in a race would motivate me to push myself just a bit more than usual. And, although my typical M.O. is to relax with my training runs, tonight I was just feeling like a bit of a challenge. My confidence boosted by Tuesday's "Magic Mile," I knew I was up for logging a faster-than-usual time.

I picked one of those smooth treadmills I used on Tuesday and attempted to fire up the TV. Didn't work. Don't know if I've just had the bad luck of getting two non-working TVs in a row, or maybe it's just that I don't know how to operate the TVs on this particular model of treadmill. Whatever. So I just tuned my iPod's radio into trusty Life 102.5 and set the 'mill into motion. I ran four minutes, which turned into five, six, seven, and so on. Before I knew it, 10:38 had elapsed, and I hit the one mile mark. In the second mile, I was able to inch the speed up some more, and in the third mile, just a tad bit more. I finished the 5k in 31:09, not a PR by any means, but a very respectable 10:03/mile pace! And I had managed to run without stopping to walk! Yes, I usually employ a run/walk method, but once in a while, I like to run a few miles straight...there's some egotistical part of me that occasionally still likes to prove to myself that yes, indeed, I still am capable of running x miles without a walk break. I know, I know, that's probably just perfectionist Christina talking!

As I cooled down for 0.91 miles / 15:00, I felt satisfied and excited about logging my best 5k time of the year. And excited about doing another virtual race and pushing myself to maybe even shave a few seconds off of that time to dip below a 10:00/mile. Could happen! I've already signed myself up for SparkPeople's next virtual race, which is next week. We'll see how it goes. For now I'll just show off my sweet virtual bling bling!

Today’s Entertainment: Lots of great music on Life 102.5! I love my CCM running buddies!

Total CMHM Training Mileage: 90.60
