out of touch

Friday, September 09, 2011

I was away for the Labor Day weekend. I took my IPAD but haven't yet downloaded the app from Sparkpeople, so I was on the internet with it and wasn't able to enter my food or exercise. In the past that would have been the excuse to just do whatever I want. We had some challenges finding healthy food, but I was able to work out what I wanted by asking. Exercise was not a problem, since we hiked mountain peaks. During the two days, we hiked 8 1/2 miles over the course of about 6 hours, with half of it uphill. I felt it and so did my 20-something daughter and son-on-law. In fact, by the time we got back to our campground, I wasn't so hungry, so we ate very light. Best of all, we had a great time, and I returned 2 pounds lighter-a true first for me! I cannot recall a time when we went on a vacation (even a mini-vacation) where I didn't use that as a reason to eat things I wouldn't ordinarily eat. I felt great having eaten in moderation and exercised liek we did!! I hope to repeat that in a few weeks when I am off to a conference...Thank you, Sparkpeople for getting this ball rolling. I am gonna download that app!!

routines

Tuesday, August 23, 2011

We all have routines that we engage in day to day. For me, after I start the sprinklers to water the lawn, I come in to the computer and check the news. Then I check weather for the day, e-mail and a few other regular sites. Next I do 30 minutes of exercise, jump in the shower and get dressed. Breakfast and 30 minutes of reading are next.

I've been doing this routine literally for years. When I am off my routine (e.g. my husband gets the the computer first...), it changes everything. So I figured, why can't I make routines out of my healthy eating plans. I know it'll take 30-45 days to create a new habit or change an old one. Guess what...it worked! I have been at this for 2 1/2 months. Okay, it was a challenge when out internet provider was so bad I couldn’t even get on the computer, but I figured out how to work around that. Yes, I had a stomach flu and couldn't eat for a day and a half, but I got right back on the horse to carry on. That's what winners do, right? I feel like a winner!! I have lost a pound a week and am thrilled to pieces. I just printed off the Sparkpeople business cards so I can start handing them out and I printed the doctor letter for when I go see my doctor next month. This can work!! I knew I needed the accountability that Sparkpeopel provides. And I love Coach Nicole. Now I have a new bunch of strength and cardio exercises that I can fit into my day. I just had to decide to take the chance! Thanks, Sparkpeople!!

emotional eating

Sunday, August 07, 2011

I have made it through 5 weeks. I have lost 11 pounds, plus 10 more in the beginning of the year before I started Sparkpeople. I feel better. I look better (though there is still weight to go). Life is good.... except that my challenges still exist. I am definitely an emotional eater. I was able to address that ... okay, overcome that until this afternoon. Up to this point, I have redirected myself when I wanted that piece of candy. I was able to grab an apple or 10 almonds. Today I was reading a sad story and I found the Bliss candy. Whoa! 4 pieces later I chose to stop. In days past, I'd eat at least twice that many. Today, I said NO. I don't want to destroy all that I have gained from Sparkpeople. I can stop and I can start over. Today I will be over calories, but tomorrow I'll be back in the range. I like the range. I can have higher days and I can have lower days. I like that I get feedback on much more, like my calcium and cholesterol intake. I like that I'll be able to go to my annual doctor visit in a month or so and talk about my nutritional status. Thank you, sparkpeople for providing me with tools to make losing weight and exercising easier....Notice, I didn't say easy. Anything worth doing is worth doing well and no one ever said it would be easy!!
