MastectomyFriday, February 29, 2008
Well saw the surgeon this morning and she said she took out a section that was twice the size that showed on the MRI and it all had cancer in it and is saying I should now have a mastectomy done. My husband right away said NO, I told him I want to have it done to get it all out and get done with it. We need to sit down and talk about it so he doesn't feel bad about it. ![]()

I hope you had the mastectomy done. I don't think this is a decision for a man to make. You only have one life, so do what you have to for yourself.

Thank you for posting this. It is a brave and wonderful thing to share this news. I admire you so much for taking it so well - at least you sound like you are. Please be gentle with your hubby; he's got to be scared and worried for you. It's tough when it's not your battle and you can only stand and watch. Someone said to hug each other a lot and I think that's terrific advice. We're here if you need to vent or scream or just need a friendly ear. And we'll all be praying for you and your family. Hugs, kali Report Inappropriate Comment |

I had the same thing, although a different kind of cancer. Mine was lobular, but I also had a lumpectomy first (on 3/30/04). When the pathology report came back, the surgeon said he had not been able to get clean margins, so we went back in on 4/20 and did a modified radical mastectomy. The surgeon recommended that I wait to have reconstruction done, and so I did. A year later, when he asked me about reconstruction, I decided that I did not want to have it done. I may change my mind in the future, but for now, I am happy with my decision. This is a scary time. Your husband is also scared. Hug each other. Hang on to each other. Love each other. You are both going to get thru this...together. Report Inappropriate Comment |

Although this is not news you want to hear, congratulations for knowing what you want to do and standing up for it; I know sometimes people are really take others opinions and begin to doubt their own. This is an important issue and I totally agree w/you. I would rather take care of it rather than not. Cancer runs in my family, and I have lost too many to it (some young). My mom had hers perhaps 30 years ago, had no problems whatsoever. My cousin also had one and is also doing well. You'll get thru this and be able to move on; you are fortunate with the advancements they've made. You are in my prayers. ==hugs== Report Inappropriate Comment |

My mom had a mastectomy last summer for the same reasons. She is now back ballroom dancing, doing pillates and water aerobics. She is within about 5 lbs of what she weighed when she went in for the surgery. I know this is a very hard time for you. Keep up the great work! Report Inappropriate Comment |

It was rescedule for today due to the MRI showin it to be a little bigger and they needed to put in 2 wires instead of 1 for the surgeon to follow. When see got in their she saw it to be even a little bigger then that again and took it out, hopefully she got all of it. Got at the hospital at 6:30 a.m., MRI dept for the wires to be placed at 7:30 then 10:18 back up to wait for the OR. Walked into the OR rom at 11:18 and then woke up at 1:15 pm. When they woke me up I went to get up and they told me to stay down and I said that I hadto oto work, LOL think I really want to do that. Got home 2:40 ate and then fell asleep. My son picked up his girlfriend and brought her to visit me before her hadto go to work and then the hubby went to the grocery store so I won't have to. Feeling a little discomfort but not too bad.
