Another restart

Thursday, November 28, 2013

I was really doing so good on this 5% challenge, then life happened. First I went on a 10 day cruise, yea! But the food was so good. The dinners are killers. I did ok with breakfast and lunch because I went through the line, but the dining room was a whole new story. My sister and I walked at least a mile each day, but that was not enough to keep up with the dining room! Then at the end of the trip, we were able to find a wi fi spot and decided to download all past emails and facebook. Seems our father had passed away 5 days earlier. It was very hard not being able to do anything while out of the country. Daddy is in a much better place. He had gone down each visit since Mom died a year ago. He had no desire to live without her. Fortunately, our brother was able to get home and be with him until the end. We were also very blessed to be able to keep him at home right up to the end. That was very important to him. When we finally got back to the states we had to change from summer clothes to winter and get to GA. After the funeral we began to pack up our parents house. I believe we did a lot, but there is too much left. We had to leave and go back to our homes for the holidays. My own children always come home for Thanksgiving, but I really have not been in much of a holiday mood. I have much to be thankful for, but just don't feel all happy, happy like usually. I will work on this. Now I am behind on exercise since we didn't find time while in GA. My new goal will be to begin as soon as all company has left. I just don't have the energy to get it going right now, but I will make myself get back into as soon as I can have a "normal" routine.

My deepest sympathy on the loss of your father. I lost my Dad, and while it was a blessing to him, I will miss him always. You are entitled - and NEED - to mourn. So give yourself a pass for a bit. Exercise will help you, but you don't have to do it until you are ready. My prayers for your heart to heal.

Be good to yourself. This is a big adjustment, even knowing your Dad is in a better place. My Dad died this year, so I know how you feel the loss, even when it is time to let them go. May your heart be consoled by the love you shared that will continue to live on through you. Peace and Blessings, Dawn emoticon

So much joy being with your sister on the cruise. So much sadness losing your dad. So much exhaustion with cleaning out dad's house and then doing Thanksgiving. Time to breathe, rest...sending big hugs, Laurel emoticon

Poison ivy, oak, or something

Monday, September 16, 2013

I work up with red splotches that I was scratching like crazy. I worked in the yard Saturday, and I guess this is my reward. Sadly I let it mess my whole day up. I've had it twice before and it wasn't fun. Getting hot and sweaty makes it worse, so of course I talked myself out of exercise today. Tomorrow I exercise regardless.

I have been lucky in not ever having poison ivy. I was a girl scout and a camper so don't know how I escaped it. I hope you feel better. Just don't scratch it.

I just read in todays paper that using the leaves of a plantain plant will help... I have no idea what the plant looks like, or where it grows, but the People's Pharmacy column in our paper always has interesting stuff... Hope you feel better today!

Ouch, they make an ivy wash that you can use every time you work in the garden to ensure that you don't get the rash. Wishing you well.

I am not familiar with Tecnu.. I guess it is similar to Calamine. I will check it out and see if it is something I should have on hand for similar occasions.

Lots of calamine lotion may help. Feel better!

It could be chiggers/tiny bugs. They live in the grass. Things that help with the itching is Calamine lotion, Tecnu, Rubbing the inside of a bana peel on your skin and taking a cool bath with dry oatmeal thrown in.

Making more changes

Saturday, September 14, 2013

I haven't had a lot of success with weight loss so I have been trying to make some changes. I did better with my tracking, and I lowered my calories. Just when I thought it made no difference, the scale moved a little. Now I want to add some time to my exercise routine. I've also just read that I should be mixing it up more on a weekly basis. I thought it was ok to just change things up every 3 or 4 weeks. Recent readings say the most successful spark member do the widest variety of fitness activities through the WEEK! So now I'll try to do that.

I didn't know that we were supposed to change it up that often! I've been trying to get to 40 pounds lost for the past two weeks - No wonder this pesky half pound keeps hanging on!

Thank you for posting this!!

Yes, I remember being young and being able to drop 10 pounds in 2 weeks... those days are gone forever... BUT... IF I eat right and exercise, I CAN lose weight. But I do try to change out my exercise a bit. My cardio is usually the elliptical, but sometimes walking or a stationary bike. The other stuff I vary a lot. sometimes use weights, sometimes machines, sometimes just my bodyweight (think push ups... modified jumping jacks, etc)

We just have to try a little harder...

You are right, we have to keep our bodies guessing. I have been on a plateau myself for a while, and decided to tweak my diet and change up my exercise routine. My body is starting to react to the changes. I guess, it is much harder as you grow older. I have to push harder, as my enthusiasm has slowed down.
Keep pushing. emoticon

I think we have to keep our bodies guessing. I know I tend to get in a rut of certain types of exercise on specific days of the week. I am trying to add time in the pool and a new yoga dvd to mix things up. Have a great week! Hugs, Laurel

Stay with it....YOU CAN DO IT!!! I've lost over 70 pounds now and have another 35 to go. I've increased my exercise time and set a new goal of 1300 fitness minutes for the month of September. I've never achieved that much before but i know I can do it and have already passed 1,000 minutes for this month. Wish you the best with you goals and happy exercising.

It is getting to me

Saturday, September 07, 2013

I have been on 2 great teams lately, plus a free coach activity going on. 5% has been going on for about 6 weeks. I have been in denial about my true feelings about my weight loss, or lack of. I am right where I started. I lost 2 and then gained those 2 back. Now nothing. This is not my first time at this and I decided to get a different result this time, I had to make some changes. I began Coach Nicole's 28 day bootcamp DVD. This DVD really works me out, but I worked up to being able to most all of it but the last 2 days and the burpees. I hated burpees at 16 and it didn't change at 60! I decided to try and stay at the lower end of my calorie range. I was even a little under my range a few times. I just knew if I kept at it, it would pay off. Today's weigh in was a real heart breaker. No change. Now I'm sure some of my feeling low and down comes from being without airconditioning since Wednesday. New unit won't be installed until Tuesday, so I have several more days of this. It got up to 85* in the house yesterday. Usually the night air cools the house and sleeping is ok. Last night, it was still 81* at 11:30. Then there is the allergy problem. It is pretty bad and open windows during the worst of the weed season isn't helping. Sometimes the headache makes it hard to move my head at all. Don't get me wrong. I am not going anywhere, not giving up, just finally admitting to myself how I really feel about not seeing the scale move. I'll keep working on it. Thanks for listening. Spark is great. I probably would have quit without the support.

Peggy it is so hard to keep a good attitude and keep going when the results aren't there. There is a section in the articles section on the orange bar that is for Plateus and Pitfalls. I found some of the articles there very encouraging. Having no A/C in the kind of heat you are experiencing can even be dangerous to exercise in. Take it easy and don't push in those conditions. You can break through, but yeah its frustrating when you aren't emoticon

I am sorry things are not going well for you! I can understand about being disappointed about the lack of weight loss and cranky about no AC. Don't give up though; the lack of AC is a temporary problem and the weight WILL come off! It WILL!

Awww... that STINKS!! Keep on doing what you are doing, and you know it WILL move. But when you work so hard and it doesn't, it does get depressing. It's also pretty hard to work out when it is hot... and I applaud you for doing it. Keep your Spark burning!!!

I know how discouraging it can get not to see any results, especially if you seem to do everything right. It doesn't seem fair, as my teenager would say. See, I don't see any results because I hardly have exercised, and I still sneak in way too many treats.
But I know your time will come!!!
Give yourself a little break, especially as long as it is so hot. I am in the same boat! Over 100 degrees during the day and in the 80s at night. Heat makes me very grumpy and lethargic. Let's survive these last few weeks of summer!

Moderation

Tuesday, September 03, 2013

Spark coach talked about moderation today. Do I do my healthy eating in moderation? I do have somewhat of a good food/bad food idea about foods, but I don't count anything off limits. I just like to pick the food that gives me more bang for my buck. Then there is my exercise. Do I feel like I have to be perfect, or do I moderate that? I always start slow and add gradually. I have just recently decided I need to add to the bootcamp because it is only 22 minutes and I need 30 minutes. I will add more later. I think I have done ok at moderation.

Hmmmm... that is what I try to do too, although I will never ever order Fettuccine Alfredo again or fried chicken wings. Not worth the calories in my opinion. But nothing else is off limits... just try to make better choices and do the less healthy things less often. Sometimes ice cream is what you need... right? LOL
