Birds, dogs, squirrels, rabbits and kittens......gone to the animals

Tuesday, November 06, 2012

Hi,

It was raining cats and dogs (no, that isn't the inspiration behind my title) this morning and I was sitting at work wondering if I had the gumption to get out for a walk in the afternoon. At first I thought it would be so nice to just curl up on the chesterfield and laze the day away but then I thought, "well, the dogs have their jackets and I certainly have a rain coat, so what the heck.". It is not like we don't have plenty of towels to dry off in when we return or that we don't have heat to turn on to warm out chilled bones. Anyway, as luck should have it by the time I was ready to go out the rain had stopped and the sun came out! Yay!!!

So, I got the doggies ready and off we went in the truck to find to drive to our usual walking spot. We have to go over an old bridge to cross the river (hence I always refer to "going across the river" in my blogs) but when we pulled up the bridge was closed due to some really overdue maintenance. Hmmm...by that time I had three really wound up dogs whining in my ears so I remembered a spot I used to take our old dog, Peaches. It is part of old provincial park and it is a safe place to let them off leash. Well, remember the rain...I had forgotten about the puddles but we set off anyway once I folded my the hem of my jeans up.

There were squirrels everywhere! Maddy and Louisa were in their glee running and chasing them while I kept Ginger close by because she has a really bad habit of disappearing for hours on end! Then we saw a few bunnies and the chase was on! There was water going everywhere, dogs running wild and suddenly these little birds flew around me which wound the dogs up even more. I stuck out my hand and one little bird perched much to Maddy's chagrin. I am thinking someboy is bringing food up that way and they thought maybe I had food and werren't going to be distracted by my "savages".

The park is built on a huge pond and when Louisa disappeared from view I knew where to find her.....in the pond swimming along like it was the middle of summer. When she came out Maddy ran alongside her and "told her off" in no uncertain terms. Does anybody else have a dog that does that? Maddy always seems to discipline Louisa by making this really funny noise and running alongside her when she is after doing something "he" thinks she shouldn't. It is like he is grumbling under his breath and is so cute but must by annoying to poor Lou.

Anyway, came home from our walk and then I went to check on two kittens our organization is taking care of. They were found in an abandoned dump and Mom and I drove about two hours yesterday to pick them up and bring them to our town where we have a foster care family for them. They are two little females with grey fluffy fur....total heartbreakers and I hope they find their forever homes soon. I stopped into the vet clinic on the way home and saw another wee kitten that was rescued last week and who now has a wonderful home with two rescued doggies. The doggies love their little "brother' Peter and cuddle him all the time.

Am trying a new recipe tonight - found it on the Kraft Canada website. Will let you know if it turns out because it is quite simple......calls for 4 chicken breasts (skinless boneless), orange juice, brown sugar, and a box of stuffing mix. I am doing it almost exactly as it calls for (I try to do that the first time I make a recipe and then make adjustments if we like the basic taste). Anyway, I am steaming a bunch of veggies so it will beat eating out even if I use the boxed stuffing mix which I am not a fan of at all.

I hope you are all having a wonderful day. I realize this is election day in the U.S.A. so I am sure many of you are wrapped up with that.

Fun . . . I so enjoy watching all the critters from my window and lately, we've had a neighborhood dog try to climb a tree in excitement of hopefully catching up with one of many gray squirrels.

Love, love LOVE your doggie tales!!! Thanks for sharing them! What a gorgeous walk I can just picture it and those birds coming around, how neat is that?
I hope you enjoy your new recipe! I am lucky, Mom was cooking up a storm and I got some sweet potato & spinach quiche and some sweet potato shepherd's pie -can you tell she is trying to use up what she has around the house :P I didn't get any of the turkey noodle soup tho :(
Have a wonderful Wednesday!

Oh dear! I am doing everything I can to avoid any election poo on my TV tonight! I voted early and it is now out of my hands, so why should I sweat it all night. It will happen as it is meant to be and then we have to move on from there - regardless of what happens.

I also tune in to football games for the last 15 minutes, as well as NASCAR races - last 15-20 minutes and I am fine. The only things I like to see from start to finish are BOOKS and some movies. But I NEVER read the ending of a book. And I usually force myself to finish it regardless of how I feel about it as a book is a special thing for me. It's a way to get away from who I am and they fuel my dreams.

And I think Maddy and Louisa and like a little married couple! Louisa does the running wild thing and Maddy "lets" her do it but always grumbles a little about it anyway. You should get them sweaters that say "His" and "Hers". LOL! And what would we put on Ginger's? "I'm NOT with them!" LOL!

Have a wonderful evening and I can't wait to see what happens with dinner! I am eating salad again. I am now down a total of 23 pounds! The doc's office made it official, even though she didn't even want to weigh me! I just wanted to see how close their scales are to mine. I like theirs better, but I did eat before I weighed myself this evening. There was only a 2 pound difference, so I am going with the doc's today and will see what happens for RA Fit Chicks Club weigh in tomorrow. :)

Hugs and love! I hope you are all warm and cuddly by now. I have my heated mattress pad on my bed now and can roast myself if I would like to. This thing only cost me like $60 many, many years ago and it has paid for itself a hundred times over! I have had it for at 14 years!

Our dogs love the little wildlife habitat that we have in our backyard (it's there because everything is overgrown and we've supplemented with food and water sources). There are lots of birds and squirrels, and occasional lizards and (yuck) roof rats. The owls take care of the rats!

~Losing weight in a metaphorical kind of way - a simple change we all can embrace

Thursday, November 01, 2012

Hello from a rainy day here on the rock -

I'm going to be upfront with you - I have not lost the kind of weight we all want to lose - the kind that shows up on the scale and in the way our clothing fits but I am feeling lighter these days. And it all has to do with a simple change that any of you can do and it doesn't cost a dime.

Let's have a hands up here to see who employs a to-do list in their everyday routine? Thought so! emoticon Many us use the humble (or not so humble in some of my co-workers cases - they make up very elaborate computer generated to-do lists!) as a way of keeping on track.

Mine for today would have read something like this:

_walk dogs
_think about something for supper
_call groomer
_laundry
_clean bathroom

ETC

But I have decided that I am going to change my way of thinking - from now on any list I make is going to be "my done" list:

What did I do today:

I went to work, I drank my water, I ate a healthy lunch, I walked both me and the dogs, I did two loads of laundry, I am in the process of cooking a healthy supper, I did a quick run to the grocery store, I gave away all of the leftover Halloween candy, I only had one piece of bubble gum, I cleaned the upstairs bathroom, I took some me time and read a magazine, I called my mom, I wrote a couple of e-mails about a dog our group is trying to rehome, I laughed at a crow flying off which a huge bag of chips in its mouth emoticon , I washed and dried dishes (our dishwasher is broke), I made a doctor's appointment, I bought a lemon pie and delivered it to out vet clinic (as a thank you for all that they do), I apologized to John for being a moody cow when I woke up this morning, I .........................

See the difference? The first list made me feel guilty if I missed something while the second list made me feel like I actually accomplished something and did lighten the load of guilt I think we all carry on our shoulders.

Try it for yourself - I am actually going to keep a pretty little notebook nearby and call it my daily accomplishments to keep me motivated. Be sure to let me know if it makes you feel like a small load has been lifted off your shoulders and pass it along if it does. Replace that feeling of "I should have done" to "look what I accomplished"

I love it Susan! My retired husband has a short to do list. It is "do one useful thing a day" I can tell when he is having trouble with his list because he washes dishes on those days! LOL! Prettty good for someone that never did that in his life as a working man. We don't have a dishwasher either.
I can see where your new approach will be better and better as you ad more positive activities to the list each day. Thanks for sharing your ideas... you can add "blogged on Sparks" to the list.

Like the idea and I think I will use it but I'm still gonna have to make the todo along with it cause sometimes I just plain forget some of the things that need to get done at certain times.

You did accomplish a lot. I guess I will only write down the things that have a serious "gotta be done by" kind of date on the todo part. Like getting my drivers license renewed! That's the only thing on the actual todo list at this point.

I love it and you are a genius! Really, you are. Doing something as simple as changing the name or purpose of a list is great!

I have done an amazing job chopping down brush, palmettos and trees that were in the way of my walking trail (hate getting a palmetto in the eye - did it twice today), I walked 2 miles, I threw toys for the dogs while I had a death grip on the Sawzall, I walked around the yard carrying limbs and palmettos, I drank a ton of water, I got out of bed (that was a bit tough!), I ate an apple for lunch and will cook a nice pasta meal for Di and I tonight. I did part of my weight training and just need to finish that up.

I need to get in the shower and check for ticks! Hate this time of year as they always find me! So I still have a TO DO list, but only because ticks scare the crap out of me!!!

And I have accomplished the best thing yet... I have worn my dogs out for 3 days in a row! Seems that walking the yard makes them tired too! Both are passed out on the floor in front of me right now. They even pulled a few limbs for me (yes, I have trained Max to attack limbs when I shake them. The bulldog in him LOVES this.)

Happy November 1st to you, sweetcakes!

I love this idea. And may I say you not only "I actually accomplished something ", you accomplished a whole lot of something. Your list is huge and that is fantastic. I plan to use this idea, along with the keeping a journal of daily WHAT I HAVE ACCOMPLISHED. So thank you!

Oh and the picture in my mind of that crow made me smile and laugh as well. They are smart birds and I can just picture him getting to his favorite eating spot and just having a great time with those chips. Good day for the crow as well.

WAY TO GO!!!!

Take care of yourself and stay bundled up. I am sitting in the sun in my room. The skylight shines right down on top of me around 1-1:.30 pm every day, and with my heated mattress pad on the bed, I am cozy and comfy!

Here is a quick and quirky idea for a blog that I borrowed from _Linda who borrowed it from another Spark user. I think you are supposed to use one word answers but you all know me and my love of "talking"

Copy and Paste into your own blog, change the answers to suit you. It's really hard to only use one word answers.

-------------------------------Favourite place to eat?
A local restaurant where they treat us like gold. It is nothing fancy but the service is out of this world and we always end up laughing our heads off. I'm sure people think we are drunk but we just drink water and end up laughing until the tears run down our faces......I'm telling you all...happy pills are wonderful!
----------------------------------------
--------------------------------------
-------------------------------Favourite place I'd like to be right now?

Our colour preferences are alike. I wouldn't say I hate blue, but it's one colour I've consistently avoided. I've loved green since I was able to identify colours at all, and I love pairing it with rich browns. Of course, hubby's favourite colour is blue, so we've slowly been working on incorporating both our likes into something that works. It's a bit of a design challenge.

It's okay, I am a full-blown nutter anyway, and I believe the Social Security Adminstration here will agree. Will find out Dece 13th. Until then, I need to be as nutty as possible, but I also need to try not to fall down!

Love that you are at work, which means you are feeling much better! I wish I worked in a library. Always have and never did, but now they are taking money away from them so people can buy crap online. Although I have Kindle for PC, I prefer real books and the smell of the really old ones is an essential smell for me!

Then I sneeze and all the dust flies off the books! HAHA

So Ihave been thinking about what I want to be when I grow up, and I think I would like to get into armed security if I can get my disability and then get my body fixed and ready to go back to work. It's a big if, but I know I would love the job. I'll get to walk all over the place AND carry a gun. Best part of exercise is walking for me now, and carrying my gun out everyday would make me very happy. Hmmm, I should probably take a Valium before I go to work though, so no one pisses me off! LOL!

Glad to see your humor back, and your dad must have been a wonderful and funny man to have brought up a dynamite stick like you!

Best wishes to you my dear!

My first and hopefully last ambulance ride

Wednesday, October 24, 2012

Hi,

I now my "ailment" is quite mild to those that most of you are so graciously living with and accepting of, but this breathing issue is really getting to me. Yesterday, I had to leave work mid-morning after taking my "only when needed asthma inhaler" and I basically went home and passed out with my dogs around me. At the hospital last week they told me this secondary inhaler will make me very jittery so it was okay to take an ativan tablet with it. I actually slept through my husband arriving home for lunch (what I meant to say I slept through three excited doggies all barking and banging into furniture as he got dinner and theirs!) and I pretty well slept until mid-afternoon.

I used to have panic attacks years ago when my depression/anxiety wasn't as controlled as it is today. And I think when I woke up and was having trouble breathing a panic attack ensued and then I was really in a tizzy. We have this Help Line here in our province where you can call registered nurses and discuss what is going on so she recommended an ambulance be called because of the chest pain I was also feeling.

I was seen to right away, hooked up to everything, and only when they pressed on my breast bone did I have a physical reaction in that I wanted to punch somebody! Sent home with the recommendations to return to work and not to over talk nor over exert myself. If I feel like I have to use the emergency puffer to use it but to settle down for a five or ten minute period to let it work.

I am new to all of this but apparently after pneumonia your body starts to feel better before your lungs are completely back to normal. Thus I feel okay when I get up and enjoy going to work but mid morning my lungs aren't functioning as well as they could and I get tired. The pain in the breast bone is because of the laboured breathing. Well, it explains a lot and certainly being told what to expect makes it slightly less frightening.

Needless to say I didn't get any exercise yesterday (unless coughing helps!) but I did lay out and eat my breakfast as planned. I am going to try to make that an every day habit much like my water consumption.

Setting the table the night before and having everything out and ready does make it much less tempting to grab someting while enroute to work. We were given one of those Keurig coffee machines (as a thank you gift for house sitting) so I use that. The only drawback to all of this is that by mid morning I need a second water bottle by my side so that isn't a drawback but a good thing. I also am getting breakfast in me....with bread, protein and two lots of fruit.

Have rambled on enough....beautiful sunny day here......might try the dog park later on as I can sort of take it easy while the dogs have their bit of fun.

Have a wonderful day all!

Glad you are OK Susan. Must be scary being in an'amulance.
Takes time to get over pneumonia, so make sure you get lots
of rest and lots of good sleep. It's great that you are sounding
so much more motivated and going out to take the dogs for a
walk is so positive and therapeutic at the same time. emoticon
Keep it up. You are worth it. emoticon emoticon

Susan, I certainly hope you are feeling much better today. Breathing trouble and anxiety attacks are terrible when brought together on top of each other. Do you ever use coffee to help open the airway and make your breathing easier. It might work, but you have to drink it black. And most of the breathers will increase your heart rate and make you feel a bit wonky for a bit. Please take care and you are in my prayers.

I was relieved to read that it wasn't as bad as I had imagined after reading your title. If it's all about taking it slowly for a while, no doubt you can do this. You're strong!

Your title gave me pause Ė Iíve never been in an ambulance and havenít given any thought about actually ever being in one. Like death, these are pretty much givens at some point in life. Are we ever ready to face our vulnerabilities? You were wise to follow through with your help line . . . far too many women ignore symptoms that can have fatal consequences.

Planning is a lifeline and Iím so glad it is getting your day started well. Having exceeded my ranges recently, I have to work to make sure I eat satisfying meals so I can lay off the late night snacking. Today was my first successful day this week. May you stay strong and focused, while allowing the healing process to work itís wonders.

So glad you are doing better. It had to have been very frightening to have more breathing difficulties! Glad the pneumonia is improving. I used to use an inhaler a lot but haven't for a couple three yrs. now. I know if I had to use it again, I would be terribly jittery!! When one uses them regularly & the body is used to the "shot of adrenaline", the jitters are seldom felt as strong. Hoping you continue to improve!!

What are the international rates for shipping a giant bubble to you so you can stay safe and germ free??

It's been 90 degrees here in FL, and we've been cleaning the yard again - too much growth this summer and not stopping yet. But my allergies are through the roof. I felt like my nose had a body all it's own earlier as my head was so clogged up from working in all that pollen.

But please listen to the docs and REST whenever you can so you don't further damage yourself, or anyone trying to help you (by punching them in the nose). And the "coma"-like sleeping is bothersome as well. But I hope hubby takes good care of you and keeps you hydrated and clean-breathing. You may need to invest in an air purifier if this keeps up too long. I have wanted one forever, but can't afford it now.

Good luck on your recovery - and don't overdo it!

Hugs and tons of love,
Angela

I had pneumonia a few years ago and all I can say is: it takes time! And: reduce stress in any and every possible way you can. It took me 6 weeks to recover and I don't have all the other issues that you do. What finally brought me back to health was a week away from home where I didn't have to work, shop, cook, take out the dog, and tend to the everyday things. Is that possible for you?
