Halloween Challenge - The end of Week 2!

Sunday, October 10, 2010

Hi Everybody! I'm part of a Halloween challenge in which we are supposed to give ourselves "points" for nutrition, exercise, support, link to a Halloween website and write a blog. This week we were asked to do something fun!

This week I did several things that were fun! Yesterday my husband and I drove for about 3 hours with the doggies into the wilderness of Newfoundland. We had a very fun outing and it is something we've been meaning to do all summer. It is all woods roads so the bumpy ride was part of the charm!

We didn't see much wildlife other than 1 lone moose and 1 owl. But what we did see was the terrain! Goodness, how it changes with each kilometre! We got out for several walks along the way and marvelled at the beautiful ponds, the fall colours, the berries left unpicked! Louie and Maddy were racing around chasing imaginary bunnies and not so imaginary birds!

Since it is hunting season here (we don't hunt) we were dressed in our brighter than bright orange jackets and hats.....I wanted to take a picture but we forgot the camera at home! It would have been a funny picture too!

We arrived home last night with our cheeks red fromthe wind and we spent the rest of the evening being pretty lazy! The dogs were exhausted but we all loved our day together!

I need to get outside myself to enjoy the wonderful fall we are having... I'm glad you had a good time, got in exercise, and played it safe wearing the bright orange!!!

Happy Thanksgiving weekend!

Sunday, October 10, 2010

For those non-Canadians reading this, we are celebrating our Thanksgiving this weekend. Because of this theme, I'm going to tell you some of the things I am very thankful for in my life:

1. I had the best father in my life for 40 long years and can talk about him now without breaking down.

2. I supposedly have a way with dogs. The neighbourhood dogs try to drag their owners up to our door because the dogs know I will make such a big deal out of seeing them.

3. I married my friend! We dated for 9 years, we engaged for 2 and have been married for 10. Yes, we fight but at the end of the day we love and appreciate each other.

4. I have a good relationship with all of my extended family members! Right from my 98 year old grandmother to my 3 year old niece in Australia whom I've never met. She knows me as the parcel lady!

5. I've thankful that we live in a country where healthcare is free and that nobody is shooting at us and that everynight we have food on our table and a roof over our heads.

6. I'm thankful that my parents taught me early on the importance of giving back.

7. I am thankful for living in Newfoundland which really is a little bit of Heaven on earth. We have hundreds and hundreds of miles of untamed wilderness.

8. I am thankful that I have found Spark! There have been moments when I don't want to exercise or when I really want to eat garbage but I visualize the faces of my Spark friends and you guys keep me motivated.

9. I'm thankful for having a wonderful mother! I never appreciated her as much as I should have but since Dad died, our relationship is wonderful. I light up when I see her and we really enjoy each other's company. All we do is laugh!

10. I'm thankful for the memories of Peaches! Also for having been asked to foster both Maddy and Louie. The days we signed their adoption papers we were so blessed!

11. And finally, I'm blessed to have a gay brother. He has taught me so much about love and friendship. He has opened my eyes to so much and I am thankful for every gay friend I have!

We all need to remember to count our blessing and to never take them, or our loved ones, for granted. You sound very blessed. I would love to see Newfoundland someday; it sounds so wonderful.

Loved to read this! I am thankful for many of the same reasons for living in my little corner of Canada. Its lovely here and I would really wouldn't want to live anywhere else. I am so lucky to have the precious Mother I have. She doubly makes up for not having much of a father..
I hope you have a wonderful thanksgiving with your family..

Everything you wrote in this post warmed my heart and made me smile. I relate to so many of the things you wrote. The parts that most jumped out at me were about your 98 year old grandmother... mine turns 99 at the end of this month. Aren't grandmothers amazing?! And the other was that you live in Newfoundland. I lived in Corner Brook when I was a little girl, and I have many fond memories.

Have a blessed Thanksgiving weekend.... and thank you... for sharing all of your "thankful for's.... " =0)

Random Acts of Kindness

Saturday, October 09, 2010

Today's blog idea came from an incident I was part of yesterday. While at the drive thru of our local Tim Hortons I was happened to notice the face on the woman in the vechicle behind me.

This is different for me for two reaasons: a) I never take the drive-thru route but decided to take the dogs with me and let their snouts out the windows and b) if I have the dogs I am usually preoccupied with their expressions than the people around me.

So, I happened to be doing something in a place that I'm never in. I was sitting in my car thinking of great my life is when I looked in my side mirror and was shocked to see the woman behind me looking so sad and forlorn. She was practically holding up her head with her hand and leaning on her door frame.

There I was so happy and there she was so sad. I wanted to get out of my car and go to her but thought she might think I was a complete nutcase for doing so.

When I paid for my order I asked about paying for her order to. I asked them to tell her that there is kindness in this world and that somebody was thinking about her. So I drove off feeling good having paid for her and she was reminded that the world really is a good place.

Somebody did this for me several years ago and I never forgot how "special" I felt that a random stranger would reach out to me. I try to do this whenever I can and I try to get my friends to do it as well.

Please consider doing one Random Act of Kindness this coming week!

As a follow-up to this story: I visited this same Tim Horton's this morning and the woman who served me the other day came over and told me how touched the woman was! She wanted to know my name but all they would tell her at Tims was that I do this from time to time and that she should now do a kind deed for some other stranger!

Thanks for all of your responseS!

I've had others do this for me on quite a number of occasions actually, and each time it makes me feel so surprised and happy. And once, when I found out that I had lost my purse, a person behind me paid more then $25 for my groceries. It was right before Christmas, and I was speechless and I went home with happy tears streaming down my face. He just told me to Pay it Forward. I do so whenever I can. Thanks making your little corner of the world a kinder, brighter place for that lady.... and for sharing your Pay it Forward story....

You would never know how much this might mean. That's the beauty of it. You do this without any expectation of reward or even, necessarily, gratitude. Just do it because it is an act of kindness.

Blessings and hugs,

What dogs do while we are at work....

Friday, October 08, 2010

I know this is my second blog for the day but I thought this would make all of my dog loving friends laugh!

I decided at the last minute to take today off of work and so I didn't follow my regular morning routine. I've had an inkling that my dogs are both lazy all along but this morning proves it!

They are both still in the respective beds in our bedroom and whenever I sneak in to look at them, one or both will half-open their eyes and give a little wag of their tail before giving a big sigh and flopping down again. It is totally priceless! I thought that if I was up making noise that they would get up and want to play...oh, no...I think they are saving all their energy for their regular afternoon and evening walks.

They look so cute asleep!

So funny. We are down to one border collie from four a few years ago. She gets up every morning at 6:00 when we do and goes out front to get the paper with my husband. Then she lays in the hallway waiting for him to finish "reading the paper" in the bathroom. So loyal.

Aww thanks for sharing! I stayed home sick today, one of my two was always in bed with me. Now they're curled up on either side of me on the couch! Wish I could have the life, and stay so skinny to boot!

Sounds like my two. Greyhounds are noted for their laziness so they spend most of the day sprawled out, snoring their heads off. Despite this, they still manage to make me feel guilty for leaving them alone when I go out!

That sounds like my three as well. After all why move of the comfy bed when somebody comes in. In our house they only move for nibblies or their dinner.

Cats are the same! One day last week my cats bugged me until I got out of bed. The didn't want anything. Once I was up, they both went back to sleep in the living room. Little rat finks! lol

"Mommy" is mean! I went back to the bedroom and pulled my jeans and t-shirt on just to see their reaction. Nothing! But then I put my jacket on and headed to the front door. They practically stumbled out the door looking dazed and confused. I decided to drive to our local Tim Horton's (coffee shop for all you non-Canadians!) and actually went through the drive thru...which I NEVER do! The dogs hung their heads out the window and the staff gave them two timbits...you'll be proud to know that I took the sugary coating off and threw it out and only gave them each a teeny peck of the inside. Now, they are back home...gone back to sleep!

This is why I try not to feel guilty about leaving my dog in his pen all day while I'm at work. He does his best to make me feel bad in the morning, but I know he basically sleeps his day away. Lucky dogs!

emoticon No dog shall rise before their normal waking time!!
My Mom's Bendix is used to my step dad's hours, so he doesn't expect to go for his walk until 10 am, which is quite late, so if we want to go somewhere early in the morning, we are out of luck lol. Mom is an early riser, he prefers to sleep in. He stays up late, she goes to bed early, one of the many reasons they need separate bedrooms for peace of mind!
