Sun, freckles, bracelets, frost, walks, recipes, and weight loss!

Tuesday, May 24, 2011

Well, you would have "thunk" it; Spark actually works! After my first week of getting back into the swing of things I lost almost 3 pounds. AND, all I did was to honestly record what I ate (some days were good and some weren't!), walked a little bit extra, and had faith in myself. I know I'm not going to lose weigh every week but it is a start and it is what I needed to get my motivation going. ! emoticon

I also borrowed an idea from my SparkFriend Turtlebear who wrote on her page

"My Spark Page says: "Just for today, I'm going to make healthy choices in my life. I will live in the moment. I'll worry about tomorrow when it becomes today. I can do ANYTHING 'just for today.' I believe that my history is NOT my destiny."

She wrote a blog about wearing a rubber bracelet all the time to remind herself of her journey and her commitment. Well, me being slightly anal...okay, make that a whole lot anal, I spent a week looking for the perfect thing to wear to serve as my reminder. I wasted so much time into looking for the PERFECT bracelet, ring, pendant that I lost my focus! Finally I just took a bracelet out of my "collection" (ha!) and decided to wear it all the time. Although my Mom gave it to me a few years ago, I'm not into jewellery but this trick has worked wonders for me.

You see, I can't get it back on myself so IF I take it off, I have told my husband to tell me off as he is the one to put it back on. I wake up wearing it and feeling its weight and I immediately think of my journey. It is there as a reminder that this is a lifestyle commitment and not some spur of the moment diet! And, it works!

To get to the rest of my blog title, it snowed (just a few flakes) on Saturday and yesterday I was wearing shorts! Go figure. I've also been quite faithful about wearing sunscreen on my face (who cares if the rest of my body ages.....just joking!) and I'm developing quite the freckled-face....AGAIN! Oh well, t'is the price of being a redhead!

I tried my new food of the week, quinoa, which was good. Apparently it is the only grain which is a complete protein. Who knew? This week, I bought some fresh brussel sprouts to try. Any recipe ideas out there?

Beautiful day here and I have a clothesline full of clothes. The dogs and I are going to head out for a jaunt soon so I can get some exercise in before I tackle the housework. UGH! Oh well, I should be thankful I have a house to take care of!

Have a great day all of you, my dear friends

    Great job!

I LOVE brussel sprouts. I cut of the ends, cut them in half, & toss them with a tsp of olive oil & some salt. Then roast them in a 400F oven for roughly 20 minutes. In fact, I do that with almost any veggie . . .

Oh, a fish taco is fish sauteed (or fried) in a tortilla. This particular one had some mango salsa & cabbage on top. Yummy!

I heard this story today in the faculty room and since you brought up the subject, I just had to share.

Lisa: How do you spell anal?
Sarinda: S - A - R- I - N- D - A
Lisa : Huh?
Sarinda: S - A - R- I - N- D - A
Lisa: Is the "S" silent?

By the way, Lisa is NOT blonde.

That is a great idea about the bracelet!! Way to go Turtlebear!!
Way to go to yourself for daily tracking, nothing slaps you more in the face then seeing it in bald print! No escaping from it. The one thing I am 100 % consistent about has always been my tracking. Sometimes its a morbid curiosity, like I ate all THOSE calories at a buffet???
I wear a big brim hat to keep the nasty sun off my face. Haven't had freckles there since I was a kid. They would look like a brown bar across the bridge of my nose, because the eyeglasses would reflect strongly onto my nose and cheeks. Wow! Tempest is a little over the top there lol.
Keep up the great work! I am not a fan of brussel sprouts, find them too tough if bought fresh, but the frozen ones aren't bad..

I like the bracelet idea. I think I'm going to try it also.

First of all I need to say emoticon on the 3 lbs. That is sooo awesome. As for the brussel sprouts I have no suggestions cause I have never had them but let me know and maybe...just MAYBE I'll try them too emoticon
and can I just say I was looking for something to get me going and I think if I too put on a piece of jewellery of some sort that it could be a reminder of what's important and keep me on track...now I must go have a look to see what I can find. emoticon

Oh and as for the freakles as my nephew would call them, I must tell you this cute little story. My brother was giving his kids lunch and had asked them to go wash up,the 2 girls did but Jay was still in there and he could hear the water running so he goes to check on him and he walks in and Jason was literally scrubbing his face to death and was starting to cry, Byron asked him what was wrong and he replied
" I can't get these dirty spots off my face".
It was the first time the sun had really brought out his freckles and he thought it was dirt. He is now 21 and we still laugh about that.

It is so nice to find a fellow "anal" person!

The old way of making brussel sprouts was to steam them and then add on a ton of butter, that is a no go! So I would probably steam them and then eat them with some type of fresh herb, thyme maybe. Another idea is to cut them in half and roast them. There are several roasted vegetable recipes here that might work.

Wow - love what turtlebear wrote! I think the bracelet idea is a good one. Helps to keep your journey at the top of your mind. Congrats on losing 3 lbs... but even more for making the healthy choices that brought those results.

BTW, I'm a huge freckle fan. Wish I had more of them, so I'm very jealous. Anne of Green Gables was my hero as a girl & I've dyed my hair red many a time... but the freckles, well it's so much effort to paint them on every day. lol

The sun is shining; well sort of.....

Happy Victoria Day Weekend!

Woke up to another cloudy day with a balmy temperature of 2 degrees c. At least the rain has let up because the past two days have been rainy and we even had some of the white stuff! EW!

Then about lunch hour the sun peeped through the clouds and I think all of Newfoundland had a minute of silence in its honour. The hubby is sick again with another cold (the second one in the past month; yet he rarely gets sick!?) so I decided to escape the germy household and take the dogs to one of our favourite trails. Walked about 7.5 km in 2 hours so I'm pleased with that. The sun stayed out in spurts so the walk wasn't too warm although the dogs seemed to need to cool off in mud, grass, water, more mud, mommy's pants legs, etc.

Here is a mental image for you all. Maddy the white pom following so closely to Lou the yellow lab that the mud was flicking off Lou's tummy onto Maddy's face. Poor thing looked like he was covered with fleas! Then he got in the act too and jumped into a mudhole and all I could do was laugh at them. They both looked like they had black knee socks on and were totally oblivious to how dirty they were becoming. They were just pleased as punch to be out and had big smiles to prove it.

So here I am typing this while they are asleep, my husband is in a stupor and I'm cooking supper. In my effort to try something new, tonight I'm trying the quinoa. I searched Spark and found a yummy sounding Quinoa Pilaf which I made some adjustments to. We are having that with baked chicken breasts, steamed broccoli & carrots, and a glass or two of milk. Lets hope we like the quinoa!!!!

Hope you all are having a Sparking good weekend!!!!

This is me with my "birch broom in the fits" hair after walking! I think I look cranky! I wish I had taken a picture of the dog's legs as it would have given you all a good laugh. Maybe you can laugh at my picture instead. Laugh....dag nammit.

P.S. The quinoa was okay....a little bit too salty due to the chicken broth I think and I added some salt to the veggies which I shouldn't have done. Will make it again all the same!

Into each life a little rain must fall

Friday, May 20, 2011

Thought you all might enjoy a picture of me walking....in the pouring rain! Here is where I was walking:

All was going well until I started thinking about all of the episodes of Criminal Minds I've watched and kept thinking that nobody knows where I am. Then I thought that the rain would keep even the psychos home! It was about that moment that I turned and saw something out of the corner of my eye....I screamed so loud I frightened myself! Turned out to be a poor rabbit but jeepers, didn't I jump. Ha!!!!

I took a few pictures along the way but they all came out so dreary looking that I didn't want to give you all the wrong impression. Here is a "self-portrait" in which John says I look about 12! Ha! I don't think I look that young but I don't think I look 45 in this picture....mind you, I do look my age in real life! Ha!

After walking 7 km today and not eating (don't even go there....I wasn't hungry at all) I went out to eat because I figured I'd get a lot of calories in a restaurant. Anyway, that backfired because I had a huge salad and could only eat half of my hamburger. Hmmmm?! We entertained ourselves while waiting for our meal:
All I can say is that no alcohol was consumed and this is the way we usually are.

Tonight's laughter was brought on by a woman wearing an eye patch walking into the restaurant and announcing in a very loud voice that "I'se wit the dart party". If she said it once she said it a dozen times until John leaned over the table and whispered to me "was she the target". That set me off into a fit of laughter and from then on everything struck us funny.

So today's lesson is to walk in the rain, laugh at yourself, the best laughs are not planned, and don't be afraid to post silly pictures of yourself!

Excellent blog! I think if my husband and I went out with your husband and you we might get kicked out of the restaurant for laughing too much and having too good of a time! We are the same way. :)

I love your pictures of your walk. I don't think it looks that dreary - you really brightened the picture up. it looks like a beautiful time. I have a hard time walking alone because I do watch too many criminal minds, law & order, etc. lol. Imagination can get the best of me sometimes.

Have a wonderful rest-of-the weekend!!!

Walking, walking, and more walking

Thursday, May 19, 2011

Just noticed that when I changed around my SparkPage today that I must have changed the background colour of my blog entries too; not sure if I like the red with the pink?! Hmmm.

I've been trying my hardest this week to make sensible nutritional choices and to make walking a priority. I walked twice yesterday and today I walked four times. Not great distances at any one time but at least I'm getting out there.

I'm very happy to report that my phone did not die from "boob" sweat as I had previously thought and wrote about in yesterday's blog! I had dropped it off this morning to be sent away and received a call a few hours later that it just needed some updates. My question is just how many updates does a five month old phone need? Oh well, there is a reason I'm not technologically inclined. So I have it back and thus will try to stay in touch as it would alert me when somebody made a comment or posted a new blog.

I read somewhere that this is the Chinese Year of the Rabbit emoticonand I gotta tell you all how true that is. During last night's walk we saw 7 which Maddy and Louisa promptly chased. We even saw a grouse which luckily they didn't see because the former is a bit slow and I wouldn't want my dogs to hurt a poor animal.

We still haven't had the full report back from the vet regarding Lou's condition. She seems to be scratching just as much and other than saying it wasn't cancer we aren't sure what the "abnormalities" that they found actually are. emoticon

My mom and grandmother are still under house arrest (actually quarantine but house arrest sounds funnier) due to an outbreak of the Norwalk virus. This is the third week that they haven't been allowed out or visitors allowed in. I call Mom at least twice a day because I know she must be going stir crazy. For most of that time they weren't even allowed out of their rooms so they couldn't socialize over the dinner table.

Oh, I've got to tell you something about my Mom! Last fall, the Department of Health sent around nurses and social workers to talk to each resident about life in a "home". They were all given the opportunity to make suggestions and to voice any concerns. My normally meek and mild mother apparently gave them a blast for not feeding the residents nutritional meals. Mom knows Canada's Food Guide like the back of her hand and knew that one chicken wing a day was not enough protein, nor were they getting the proper amounts of fruits and vegetables. Anyway, yesterday a letter came out to all the residents stating that there would be major improvements in the foods served. There would be more emphasis on fresh fruits and vegetables emoticonand less emphasis on processed foods emoticon.

Mom is the only one at this particular home paying her own way (due to years of saving) and she has to pay almost $1700.00 a month for room and board. Then she was spending another hundred or so every month on fruit. I'm glad she spoke up as these homes often are not looking out to the best interests of their residents. Mind you the staff are great and Mom loves it there but I'm sure proud she spoke up!

Anyway, I'm trying to catch up with the many blogs I have missed....please be patient and don't give up on me quite yet!

Impressed with your mum - good for her for speaking up & good for the home for listening & making the improvements.

Yeah walking with the dogs. Not only is it good for your body, but for your mind too. And the minds/bodies of the dogs. Are you noticing a difference in their behaviour since you started walking longer/further/more often?

Well done to your Mom!!! She rocks!! That is awesome standing up for her rights to have nutritious food!!! Unbelievable she would have to pay extra for good food when she pays so much already!!

Don't read if you are a prude.......

Wednesday, May 18, 2011

I wasn't sure what to write as a title for my blog but I think I just might have caught your attention by it! I've had the weirdest day and it all started when......................................

Actually, I'm going to make you wait (unless you scroll down) to tell you what happened to me. First of all, I ate breakfast at home!!!! Yeah!!! I ate a really healthy organic cereal that is full of nuts and seeds. I had that with a lukewarm coffee (I told you I was lazy), a banana, and one cup of skim milk.

Then I actually at lunch! Another first in a long time! Wasn't the best as all it was was water and 2 boiled eggs but the point is I ate something. Mid afternoon I sat out on our patio and had some saltine crackers and a well-deserved cup of tea.

Okay, I have you all wondering what happened to me. Well, I went for a walk across the river with the two "beasts". For some reason I bought capri pants with no pockets and since today was warm enough to wear them, off I went. As I was getting out of our truck I thought, I should just leave my cellphone hidden instead of taking it with me but on second thought decided to take it along. Not wanting to hold it (duh), I stuck it in the front of my bra!!! Oh, I forgot to tell you, I was expecting a call from the vet about Lou's condition which is why I actually decided to take the blessed thing with me for a walk. Anwyay, every so often it would beep (usually notifying me that somebody had left a message on my SparkPage...thank you!!!) but then it stopped and I decided to check it in case I had boob-dialed anybody. Well, when I took it out, it was covered in sweat...such a charming image for all of you....and the bloody thing wouldn't turn on!!!!

I don't know if it was just a coincidence but the thing definitely is kaput! I took it to the mall where we had bought them for Christmas and they said they were going to have to send it away. At first they said it would take 8 weeks and they didn't have a phone to lend me. Added to that, I would have to still pay for service when it was being repaired and for the weeks it wasn't in my possession. Oh, and I needed to give them $45 which wouldn't be refunded if they determined the phone had been dropped or exposed to moisture!!! Since I didn't have the money with me I went home and called my husband. I was pretty upset but proud that I didn't get mad at the customer service reps.

It was while I was sipping my cup of tea that I realized this is such a small thing. Nobody is shooting at us, nobody is dying, and we have plenty to eat so why worry over a silly ol' Blackberry. I think it was about then that I started to laugh about the whole thing. Then when my husband arrived home we sat back and laughed and laughed some more. I said do you think I should tell them where I had the phone to which he replied, "I'd love to see that written on a work order....phone won't work after being exposed to boob sweat". Oh dear, I hope you are laughing while you are reading this and not thinking I am disgusting!!!!

So the long and short of it is, I will be without my phone for a few weeks and I will live without it. I won't die and I gave myself another reason to laugh at myself!!!!!

I've been told that if it's exposed to moisture and you take out the battery and put it in some dry rice it will often draw the moisture out. It did work with one phone my daughter dropped in water.

Last summer I as driving to California through the desert and I put my brand new Droid that I'd only had a few weeks in my bra because I was by myself with the stereo up loud and would hear it if someone called my, like my brother whose house I as going to from New Mexico. I was driving with the a/c on but still the sun shining in the window in the afternoon in the desert in July cause me to sweat some. My phone worked when I first took it back out, but later it was messing up and wouldn't work unless I had it on the car charger. Even the wall charger wouldn't work. So when I got to Sacramento the next day I went to a Verizon store to have it checked. He took the cover off andlooked at a little dot in there and handed back to me and told me it was water damaged. I was shocked and upset because I didn't think there was any way it could be water damaged. I didn't think about the boob sweat. I figured I'd manage on the trip back home keeping it on the car charger in case of an emergency and deal with the phone then. I was going to be in Sacramento for a week. Next day the phone started working again. I guess it dried itself out because I didn't know about the rice at the time. But I learned my lesson about boob sweat the hard way too!
By the way, I always take my phone with me when I go walking because I'm afraid something might happen and I need it. Don't want to fall or something and not be able to call for help.

Hilarious! I'm notorious for sticking things in my bra - money, cell phone, raffle tickets....

Before sending your phone off, try putting it in a bag overnight with one of those silica baggies that come with new shoes or in food packaging where the food needs to stay dry. You know the kind I mean?

A good friend of mine puts her cell phone there all the time. I'll have to warn her as to what can happen if she sweats too much.

I sweat so much there's no way I could put anything in my bra without it being wrecked! FYI, they have little velcro straps that go around your bicep for phones, Ipods, etc. I saw one at Wal-Mart. Good luck with your phone!

Too funny! Just be grateful it did not short out in there! Had that happen to a friend once.. started seeing smoke release from bra. No harm but she sure had a hard time living that one down! emoticon

As usual, I loved your blog. I don't know why, but I almost never stick anything down my bra. From the responses here, I'm thinking I must be in the minority. Told this story to my WH and he said, "Yes, you should let it dry out before turning it back on, but you should also remove the battery first." Now, didn't we all learn some useful information today.

Now, if we could just get my mp3 player back up and going.

I guess that this is a picture of a booby prize?!

emoticon One of my pedometers died due to sweat when I thought I would put it in my sports bra for safekeeping since my pants had no pockets and this wasn't a clip on type :( Live and learn..

Oh lord - I know about that fine print about getting moisture on a phone. My middle son is a dear, but he has accidentally dropped things in the toilet his entire life - including a cell phone. When he was little and it was a comb or a Matchbox car, he thought he'd hike the evidence by flushing. Plumbers loved to hear from us! Thanks for the funny story!!

LOL darn boob sweat! But next time (if there is a next) try just drying it out first. Don't try to turn it on until it's definitely dry. Put it in a bag of rice. Most of the time that works.
