From 28 degrees to 8 in a few hours....a.k.a. living on an island

Saturday, May 28, 2011

Hi,

Well, we've had some wonderful weather the past few days which has encouraged me to get out a wee bit more. Yesterday, though, was downright bizarre.

I started out wearing shorts (I think this is the earliest I've ever worn them and I have the white, dry legs to proof it) as the temperature rapidly climbed to 28 degrees (c). I've been dog sitting my friend's poodles (they can't come back here as they did their pee about six times each in my house!!!) so I was there for several hours yesterday. I decided to attempt taking the four dogs out for a walk...boy, oh boy, that was a handful. Anyway, while out for our walk I started to get really cold to the point that I had goosebumps. Turns out the temperature had dropped 20 degrees in two hours. Brrrr. The dogs had fun though and that is all that matters.

So, I didn't get a long walk in yesterday but I did get other things accomplished which was fine by me. I also found out I might qualify for EI (employment insurance for those non-Canadians) which will definitely come in handy as John is not working at the moment either. I think he has 8 school days left and then is finished his course. Wow, where have those 9 months gone?

Oh, have to tell you all about how my bracelet (and therefore all of you guys) helped me make a healthy food choice yesterday. It started out that I was getting cranky with my husband and needed some time to myself. I went for a short drive and was pretty hungry. I hadn't eaten supper but my mind was on a huge bag of chips and some chocolate. A quick glance at my bracelet suggested I revise my plan of attack. I then thought of going to McDonalds (again the bracelet stared back at me) and ended up at Subway. I never have any butter, mayo or sauce on a sub anyway, so I knew it was going to be a happy ending. As I drove off, my bracelet sparkled at me in support!!!

I'm trying to catch up on blogs today of SparkFriends I don't check in on as much as I should. So, I'm starting at the bottom of my friend's list and working back. You should all hear from me this weekend!

Take care!

Susan

Hey - we're twins! I chose Subway over McD's yesterday too - even logged it. emoticon Gold stars for both of us.

I'm laughing with a picture of you wrangling 4 rambunctious doggies. Bet you burned a few bonus calories!

Keeping my fingers crossed for the EI. Will hubby be finished school in June - or just for this year?

You have encouraed me to wear the bracelet too.
As I was cleaning and throwing out stuff today, my
son handed me the coppe rbracelet and I have been
wearing it and it worked for me at dinner tonight.

I was also thinking of bacon and eggs but decided to
have a boiled egg in a tuna salad. So far so good.
Thanks. Wow, walking four dogs msut have been quite
a challenge. Was that drop in temperature normal? You
looked so summery in the last pictures. Also, good on
you for your choices at subway. emoticon emoticon

I put on a bracelet to remind me to drink my water. I suppose it has helped, but I'm still a long way from drinking the minimum. I think I need something that hurts. You made a good choice for your breakfast. FYI, if you should ever find yourself at McDonald's for breakfast, eat the Egg McMuffin. It has a very acceptable calorie count of 300 calories with 12 g fat and 18 (!) grams of protein.

Wow, what great choices you made, I'm proud of you. Your weather there sure can change quickly unlike here in North Florida where this time of year it is fairly cosistent at 90 degrees!!!

Walking 4 dogs at one time must be a real challenge!!!!

Have a great weekend!

Good choice! Whenever dh wants to get macdonalds i go for the salad...but they're outrageously expensive! It's a little ridiculous that a burger can cost half that of a salad.

You had 28 degreed yesterday?!? That must have been nice! We had around 22 but it was super windy and misty. Now today it's only 4 degrees! Oh well, tomorrow it's going back up.

10,000 minutes and a dog's anatomy!!!

Thursday, May 26, 2011

Well folks, here is a picture of me out for the walk that found me crossing 10,000 fitness minutes: !!!! This was taken last night around 8:30 at the field where we let the dogs race around halfway through our walk. I think I look FAT but that is okay because that is going to change, right!? AND, the coat I'm wearing is a tad big but it is my favourite walking jacket!

I'm continuing to record what I eat but I'm proud to say that I'm not being too anal about it. Still having difficulties getting all my calories, fat, protein and fibre in but I know this is partly because I'm not making lunch a priority. Gotta work on that.

Here is a picture of one of my favourite side dishes....Asparagus with pine nuts:

If you read my last blog, you will know I borrowed an idea from Turtlebear and I am now wearing a bracelet on my arm around the clock. This is a big deal for me because I'm the type who walks in the house and even my wedding ring gets pulled off and I end up sticking them in the weirdest spots.....the real fun begins the next day when I try to remember where I was when I took them off!!! Drives my husband NUTS!!!!

Anyway, I digress. I am wearing my bracelet as a reminder of my personal commitment to the Spark program. When we were out for supper last night and I really wanted to order a pasta dish but realized the salad and tacos would give me some much needed vegetables, it was my bracelet that kept me on track. Funny because my bracelet is made up of both white and yellow gold circles. Each time I look at the circles linked together I am reminded of the link I am in the lives of my SparkFriends and vice versa. Silly I know, but it works!

I've babbled on enough! The rain has stopped today and the sun is out! Going to be a beautiful day for a long walk with beauty and the beast (Maddy's name for him and his sister....HE is the beauty in his humble opinion)

Jeepers, just remembered I had something else to tell you. For those that were interested in Louisa's health. Turned out the abnormality is a narrowing of the vaginal walls which prevents bacteria from leaving her vagina. She is going on a short term cycle of both antibiotics and a steroid. She might have to have surgery which can't be done here and they aren't sure if it can be done anywhere on the island. Keep your fingers and paws crossed that she gets some relief soon. Bless her little heart.

Here is Maddy or the Pom in Motion as we call him

Have a great day, you all!!!!

Recipe for asparagus is posted in the comment section.....I never thought to include it but Temptest did ask for it. The original recipe came from Chatelaine magazine (June 2009)

Recipe for asparagus and pine nuts is:

1 bunch of fresh asparagus (tough end snapped off and composted)
4 tsp butter
1/4 cup pine nuts
salt
pepper
lemon or orange (optional)

Partially fill large skillet with boiling water. Bring to a full boil.

Add the asparagus. Cook quickly (about 2 minutes) to make sure it remains tender-crisp.

Remove asparagus, dry it off, and arrange on serving dish. Remove skillet from heat, pour off the water. Wipe pan out and add butter. Melt over medium heat. Add pine nuts and stir continously for another 2-3 minutes.

Pour nuts/butter over asparagus. Season with salt and pepper and juice of lemon or orange. I use REAL butter (unsalted) because I have a job getting my fat in and I've never added the lemon/orange.

The asparagus/pine nuts looks delicious. What's the recipe, please?

Poor Louisa! I hope the antibiotics resolve things. The surgery sounds complicated & expensive.

About the bracelet... silly often works! I was raised in a home where silliness was unacceptable & just learning now, in my 40's, that "silly" motivates our inner child. It's that inner child that causes most of the problems, so makes sense that "silly" techniques are often the most effective. I've been thinking of getting a bracelet for myself since reading about you doing it. Might help me in the evenings.

10,000 fitness minutes!!!!!!!!!!

Love the picture of you! Since your legs look thin, I'm guessing the coat is pretty bulky. The bike picture I had hubby take - at your request! - is the same. A too big jacket making me look bigger than I am. Maybe I should take a page out of your book & post a picture I'm not totally comfortable with. Pushes me to be more self-accepting.

Hope you're having a great day!

Sun, freckles, bracelets, frost, walks, recipes, and weight loss!

Tuesday, May 24, 2011

Hi,

Well, you would have "thunk" it; Spark actually works! After my first week of getting back into the swing of things I lost almost 3 pounds. AND, all I did was to honestly record what I ate (some days were good and some weren't!), walked a little bit extra, and had faith in myself. I know I'm not going to lose weigh every week but it is a start and it is what I needed to get my motivation going. ! emoticon

I also borrowed an idea from my SparkFriend Turtlebear who wrote on her page

"My Spark Page says: "Just for today, I'm going to make healthy choices in my life. I will live in the moment. I'll worry about tomorrow when it becomes today. I can do ANYTHING 'just for today.' I believe that my history is NOT my destiny."

Turtlebear"

She wrote a blog about wearing a rubber bracelet all the time to remind herself of her journey and her commitment. Well, me being slightly anal...okay, make that a whole lot anal, I spent a week looking for the perfect thing to wear to serve as my reminder. I wasted so much time into looking for the PERFECT bracelet, ring, pendant that I lost my focus! Finally I just took a bracelet out of my "collection" (ha!) and decided to wear it all the time. Although my Mom gave it to me a few years ago, I'm not into jewellery but this trick has worked wonders for me.

You see, I can't get it back on myself so IF I take it off, I have told my husband to tell me off as he is the one to put it back on. I wake up wearing it and feeling its weight and I immediately think of my journey. It is there as a reminder that this is a lifestyle commitment and not some spur of the moment diet! And, it works!

To get to the rest of my blog title, it snowed (just a few flakes) on Saturday and yesterday I was wearing shorts! Go figure. I've also been quite faithful about wearing sunscreen on my face (who cares if the rest of my body ages.....just joking!) and I'm developing quite the freckled-face....AGAIN! Oh well, t'is the price of being a redhead!

I tried my new food of the week, quinoa, which was good. Apparently it is the only grain which is a complete protein. Who knew? This week, I bought some fresh brussel sprouts to try. Any recipe ideas out there?

Beautiful day here and I have a clothesline full of clothes. The dogs and I are going to head out for a jaunt soon so I can get some exercise in before I tackle the housework. UGH! Oh well, I should be thankful I have a house to take care of!

Have a great day all of you, my dear friends

    Great job!

I LOVE brussel sprouts. I cut of the ends, cut them in half, & toss them with a tsp of olive oil & some salt. Then roast them in a 400F oven for roughly 20 minutes. In fact, I do that with almost any veggie . . .

Oh, a fish taco is fish sauteed (or fried) in a tortilla. This particular one had some mango salsa & cabbage on top. Yummy!

I heard this story today in the faculty room and since you brought up the subject, I just had to share.

Lisa: How do you spell anal?
Sarinda: S - A - R- I - N- D - A
Lisa : Huh?
Sarinda: S - A - R- I - N- D - A
Lisa: Is the "S" silent?

By the way, Lisa is NOT blonde.

That is a great idea about the bracelet!! Way to go Turtlebear!!
Way to go to yourself for daily tracking, nothing slaps you more in the face then seeing it in bald print! No escaping from it. The one thing I am 100 % consistent about has always been my tracking. Sometimes its a morbid curiosity, like I ate all THOSE calories at a buffet???
I wear a big brim hat to keep the nasty sun off my face. Haven't had freckles there since I was a kid. They would look like a brown bar across the bridge of my nose, because the eyeglasses would reflect strongly onto my nose and cheeks. Wow! Tempest is a little over the top there lol.
Keep up the great work! I am not a fan of brussel sprouts, find them too tough if bought fresh, but the frozen ones aren't bad..

First of all I need to say emoticon on the 3 lbs. That is sooo awesome. As for the brussel sprouts I have no suggestions cause I have never had them but let me know and maybe...just MAYBE I'll try them too emoticon
and can I just say I was looking for something to get me going and I think if I too put on a piece of jewellery of some sort that it could be a reminder of what's important and keep me on track...now I must go have a look to see what I can find. emoticon

Oh and as for the freakles as my nephew would call them, I must tell you this cute little story. My brother was giving his kids lunch and had asked them to go wash up,the 2 girls did but Jay was still in there and he could hear the water running so he goes to check on him and he walks in and Jason was literally scrubbing his face to death and was starting to cry, Byron asked him what was wrong and he replied
" I can't get these dirty spots off my face".
It was the first time the sun had really brought out his freckles and he thought it was dirt. He is now 21 and we still laugh about that.

CRAZYDOGLADYBO 5/24/2011 9:23AM

It is so nice to find a fellow "anal" person!

The old way of making brussel sprouts was to steam them and then add on a ton of butter, that is a no go! So I would probably steam them and then eat them with some type of fresh herb, thyme maybe. Another idea is to cut them in half and roast them. There are several roasted vegetable recipes here that might work.

BTW, I'm a huge freckle fan. Wish I had more of them, so I'm very jealous. Anne of Green Gables was my hero as a girl & I've dyed my hair red many a time... but the freckles, well it's so much effort to paint them on every day. lol

Happy Victoria Day Weekend!

Woke up to another cloudy day with a balmy temperature of 2 degrees c. At least the rain has let up because the past two days have been rainy and we even had some of the white stuff! EW!

Then about lunch hour the sun peeped through the clouds and I think all of Newfoundland had a minute of silence in its honour. The hubby is sick again with another cold (the second one in the past month; yet he rarely gets sick!?) so I decided to escape the germy household and take the dogs to one of our favourite trails. Walked about 7.5 km in 2 hours so I'm pleased with that. The sun stayed out in spurts so the walk wasn't too warm although the dogs seemed to need to cool off in mud, grass, water, more mud, mommy's pants legs, etc.

Here is a mental image for you all. Maddy the white pom following so closely to Lou the yellow lab that the mud was flicking off Lou's tummy onto Maddy's face. Poor thing looked like he was covered with fleas! Then he got in the act too and jumped into a mudhole and all I could do was laugh at them. They both looked like they had black knee socks on and were totally oblivious to how dirty they were becoming. They were just pleased as punch to be out and had big smiles to prove it.

So here I am typing this while they are asleep, my husband is in a stupor and I'm cooking supper. In my effort to try something new, tonight I'm trying the quinoa. I searched Spark and found a yummy sounding Quinoa Pilaf which I made some adjustments to. We are having that with baked chicken breasts, steamed broccoli & carrots, and a glass or two of milk. Lets hope we like the quinoa!!!!

Hope you all are having a Sparking good weekend!!!!

This is me with my "birch broom in the fits" hair after walking! I think I look cranky! I wish I had taken a picture of the dog's legs as it would have given you all a good laugh. Maybe you can laugh at my picture instead. Laugh....dag nammit.

P.S. The quinoa was okay....a little bit too salty due to the chicken broth I think and I added some salt to the veggies which I shouldn't have done. Will make it again all the same!

Into each life a little rain must fall

Friday, May 20, 2011

Thought you all might enjoy a picture of me walking....in the pouring rain! Here is where I was walking:

All was going well until I started thinking about all of the episodes of Criminal Minds I've watched and kept thinking that nobody knows where I am. Then I thought that the rain would keep even the psychos home! It was about that moment that I turned and saw something out of the corner of my eye....I screamed so loud I frightened myself! Turned out to be a poor rabbit but jeepers, didn't I jump. Ha!!!!

I took a few pictures along the way but they all came out so dreary looking that I didn't want to give you all the wrong impression. Here is a "self-portrait" in which John says I look about 12! Ha! I don't think I look that young but I don't think I look 45 in this picture....mind you, I do look my age in real life! Ha!

After walking 7 km today and not eating (don't even go there....I wasn't hungry at all) I went out to eat because I figured I'd get a lot of calories in a restaurant. Anyway, that backfired because I had a huge salad and could only eat half of my hamburger. Hmmmm?! We entertained ourselves while waiting for our meal:
All I can say is that no alcohol was consumed and this is the way we usually are.

Tonight's laughter was brought on by a woman wearing an eye patch walking into the restaurant and announcing in a very loud voice that "I'se wit the dart party". If she said it once she said it a dozen times until John leaned over the table and whispered to me "was she the target". That set me off into a fit of laughter and from then on everything struck us funny.

So today's lesson is to walk in the rain, laugh at yourself, the best laughs are not planned, and don't be afraid to post silly pictures of yourself!

Excellent blog! I think if my husband and I went out with your husband and you we might get kicked out of the restaurant for laughing too much and having too good of a time! We are the same way. :)

I love your pictures of your walk. I don't think it looks that dreary - you really brightened the picture up. it looks like a beautiful time. I have a hard time walking alone because I do watch too many criminal minds, law & order, etc. lol. Imagination can get the best of me sometimes.

Have a wonderful rest-of-the weekend!!!

You have the most wonderful sense of humor - I love it! We avoid walking in the rain only because it's incredible how heavy 20 lbs of dogs can be when you have to drag them around!

Ooh, I love these pictures. Walking in the rain is one of the things I miss most about living on the coast. We don't get much rain here (and when we do, it's the nasty kind), and people say I'm crazy for missing it. Seeing your pictures reminds me that I'm not.

You and your husband just made me smile emoticon

Ahh, Susan, I want to go on that walk! You have TREES! Trees that aren't forced to grow and bend in the wind! How wonderful it must be to walk through them, and actually smell the RAIN! I loved it!

And you and your husband? You are a WONDERFUL couple of DORKS! (Maybe THAT'S why I love ya so much???) emoticon

So much about this blog that I like. I guess that the best moments are the ones that are unplanned. And all this sounds joyous.

I do happen to like your self portrait! I also like the one with the dishes around your face! You need to add the last two photos to your spark page!

I like your new photo!! You certainly do look quite young! Lucky you, your hat is waterproof, mine isn't, so if its raining hard, I use a rain cape with a hood that covers my hat.. I have posted many a gloomy, overcast photo. I can see we are ahead of you with everything starting to finally bud out now.
Its wonderful you can have some wacky fun! Those plates remind me too much of the barf catchers in the hospital lol.
Well done with your walk and fun day!!
