Who I am turning out to be........

Thursday, September 16, 2010

Four months ago today my husband and I made the very painful decision to put our beloved dog, Peaches, to sleep. At 6 years, she sat on my lap when my husband proposed and at 7 she was the flower dog at our wedding....and yes, she barked when the officiant asked if anybody objected! She was 17 1/2 years old and showed us what living life to the fullest was all about. In fact, she is the main inspiration for my current journey. Our vet praised us for walking her three time a day and for making sure she ate nothing but healthy food. Beyond that, she went for daily drives and loved being pampered by all who knew her. She was quite mischevious, even until the last day of her life...in fact, she "wrote" blogs for our local Humane Society!

Anyway, I'm doing this for Peaches! I thought about it over the summer....she lived such a good, long, happy and healthy life because somebody took the time to make sure she ate well and got plenty of exercise. If I want to set a good example to my dogs (!) and to others I have to change my life...which I'm doing one step at a time. I'll hope to find undiscovered energy along the way and to be generally happier with who I am turning out to be!

What a wonderful way to honour Peaches memory, by letting her be the inspiration for your own healthy life. You took wonderful care of Peaches because you loved her so much... and she would want you to take just as good care of yourself as you did her.

I am so sorry that you lost Peaches, yet look at all the time you had with her. We are getting ready to face the same thing with our "Bob", he is also 17 yrs.old. He also eats very healthy as I have cooked his meals from scratch for many years. Bob is not able to go for a ride in the car because he can not stand that long on the seats (he is 52 lbs) but he does go for several short walks a day. Arthritis or nerve damage in the hips is plaguing him now and the medication just seems to takes the edge off so that he is at least semi comfortable. We know that we will not have him alot longer (at least not as long as I want), I just have to remember that we gave him the best life that we possibly could with all the love he could endure just as your Peaches had. I am sure that Peaches is watching over you, very proud that his mommy is getting healthy (just as my Bob is watching his mom). Take care. emoticon emoticon

I am happy to hear your precious Peaches was so well looked after! It pains me to see some people on Sparks consider it a chore just to walk their poor dogs and that is only if the weather is nice!! Boo!! You need to look after your dog as you would a child. People seem to forget this. They can't feed themselves or let themselves out!
More power to you! Now its your turn to be well looked after!
Go for it!!

Our pets really do touch us and are a really part of the family. When our dog, Nubbie died it felt like there was something missing in the family. The other 2 dogs grieved too.

I am glad to hear you are making time for yourself. If you don't take care and nuture yourself, who will? Happy sparking.

The Adventures of Doofus and Ding-a-Ling

Tuesday, September 14, 2010

Well, I crawled into bed last night after walking 7 km and going to my very first "aquafit" class. The hike was a lot of fun because I didn't notice how far I was going because I was too busy laughing at "Doofus" and "Ding-a-Ling" (my two dogs) exploring their new surroundings! It was actually the Pom (Ding-a-Ling) who led the way as Louie (Doofus) kept backtracking to look for "momma". We even stopped along the way for a snack....actually I'm the one who should be called Doofus because I brought snacks for them but forgot some fruit for me. Had lots of water though so that helped! I've never walked that far and it didn't feel too bad! I'm giving myself a pat on the back!

Oh, I also deserve a pat on the back for going out in public with a bathing suit on! At the aquafit class I was relieved to know I wasn't the only big girl and I wasn't the only one who had to worry about her boobs flying out....they wouldn't have fallen gracefully! A wee bit sore today but nothing like I imagined! I've got my pass bought for Thursday's nights class.

I'm slowly starting to believe I can do this! It is pretty sad that I didn't believe in myselff when I joined up with SP! I know it has only been three weeks but I think I'm hooked! I've been eating breakfast everyday (that is a miracle in itself) and I'm really putting some effort into this!

Have a great day one and all! I hope the sun is shining wherever you may be! It is a beautiful day here in Newfoundland!

Sounds like you had a fun walk with the dogs. It's amazing how much easier it is to motivate yourself for a walk if you have dogs.
Aquafit is a great way to get into exercise. Keep up the good work.

I smiled at the image of you, doofus & ding-a-ling trundling along. 7 km is a long way! My favourite exercise is hiking/running with my dogs. Sadly, I lost both our big dogs this last year (old age) and I just have a little Boston Terrier, Lola, left. I've started taking my in-law's oversized & overactive golden retrievor with us... his name is Dooley, but usually I just call him Doofus!

I remember very well that feeling you describe. The tentative hope that this time will be different. And here I am six months later and it IS different. You CAN do this! One healthy choice at a time!

The more you use SP, the more addicted you'll become. I started off just looking for a site where I could track my food. Now, almost seven months later, I can't start my day without Spark!

I'm glad you enjoyed the class, it's some of the best exercise you can do. You're going to do great!!!

Sounds like you're off to a good start. I'd like to take the aquasize classes at our local pool one of these days. Just got to get some other things checked off my list first to make room on the calender.

Week 3 and I'm lovin' it!

Monday, September 13, 2010

Well today makes it three weeks that I've been plodding away on my journey! I am taking it one day at a time and thus far have not fallen off the bandwagon of my healthy makeover. I know it will happen in the future (just as I know my depressiono will flare up again!) but I am building a strong foundation to make it easier to crawl back on when it does. I've officially lost 5 pounds which is more than I ever lost with WW AND I don't feel hungry! Tonight I am going to squash myself into a bathing suit and go to a water aerobics class with a friend. Wish me luck with a) the bathing suit part and b) the stamina to stick with it! The sun is out today so I am taking my afternoon off and am going to pack up the kit bag and take my dogs for a much deserved hike. It is moose hunting season here now so we have to be careful where to hike but a nature park should be fine. Thank you to all who read my blogs and to those who inspire me!

Congrats on your 3 weeks of healthy choices! You're doing fantastic and you're starting to see results. There certainly will come a time when you fall off the healthy wagon... the important thing is to just dust yourself off and get back to it! emoticon

A good night's sleep + more calories = a more energized me!

Friday, September 10, 2010

I went to bed extra early last night and fell to sleep with my copy of "The Spark" in my hand...actually it fell on my head and woke me up, but you all don't need to know how klutzy I am! Anwyay, woke up at 6:00 this morning and felt good! After work today I decided to try out our treadmill and I'm very proud to say I walked 2 miles in 50 minutes. It may not sound like much to many of you but......
The Spark teaches us to visualize our goals and success so I focused on a lot of your profile pictures while on the treadmill. I could almost feel you all cheering me on and for that I thank you! I hope sometime in your busy day you knew you were being thought of!

Okay, it seems I've mislead you! I wasn't using the treadmill and the computer at the same time. I have some of your pictures drilled into my mind and you act like my guardians, cheering squad, support system even when I'm not online! I actually tried out my iPod and was getting right into the tunes ....my husband told me later that I sounded like a cat with turpentine on its bum...oh well! Thanks guys though for being by my side!

I do that all the time. It is amazing how I think of my spark friend and how I want to tell them that I made the right food choices or how I hear them in my head cheering me on to keep going a "long slow distance"... that is what I tell myself.

We ARE with you cheering you on. Keep up the good work!

Way to go!! I wish I could exercise while on the computer. I don't even have a place to put a book while on the elliptical, I just rock to music!
Keep up the good work!!

I'm so tired.....is this normal?

Thursday, September 09, 2010

Hi! I've got a weird question for you all. Since I started my Spark journey I've been abnormally tired despite getting enough sleep every night. I've been doing this for about 10 days and I also went back to work so that might account for some of it. I've also noticed my calorie count is lower than what it should be. I know calories equal energy so that is probably it. Now, it seems I've answered my own question! Also, does anyone have a good idea of a high fat but low calorie food/treat? The last few days I've missed out on my fat quota as well. I hope you are all doing well at your respective stages. It is a dull day here and even my dogs are snoozing the afternoon away! P.S. I made the Chef Meg's baked beans yesterday...yummy!

Thanks! I'm not sure what you mean about setting the fitness tracker. I've set it on mileage....ie....I want to walk a minimum of 10km a week (low, I know but it is manageable right now!)My required calorie range comes up on my nutrition page and I barely make it most days. Last night I munched on a bowl of oatmeal to which I added some ground flax and blueberries. That seemed to make a big difference and I really don't feel so tired today! I really appreciate that you take the time to read my blog!

I use natural almond butter, 8g fat 90 calories in a tablespoon. Any nut will do, but you can only have a small handful or the calorie count goes up.
I LOVE baked beans!! So yummy!!
Be careful with your calories, if you go too low your body will go into starvation mode, and you won't be able to lose any weight. Also make sure your Fitness Tracker is set to how much exercise you are doing in a week so you know for sure how many calories you should be getting!
