Learning Mode

Thursday, October 27, 2011

I find myself in a learning mode lately. It started with trying to brush up on job interviewing skills as I find myself introverted and not self-confident. It then progressed to trying to brush up on my job skills (typing, 10-key, word, excel and access). I'm trying to fit in at least 15 minutes a day on each of these things. I know I need to try to fit more time in, but I don't have a handle on my schedule just yet. I also need to start thinking outside the box on finding companies that are hiring but not necessarily posting these jobs on traditional sites. I did start making cold calls to companies: I need practice on that - I'm still uncomfortable with that.

I noticed that this learning mode has traveled over to SP. I have been reading and saving articles more lately. I want to REALLY explore the site more. I believe there's stuff I'm missing that could really help me in various areas of my life.

It all is good in theory, but, like I mentioned, I need to get a handle on my scheduling of time. I'm getting a little better by watching the clock more. I keep threatening to get the kitchen timer out. It's time to do that starting right now. For my own good, I need to improve and become the best that I can be.

Tick tock, tick tock... I hear that clock going. I am really outdated in excel especially, but until I know what job I am going to get, I can't make myself practice it. I have taken courses so many times and then not needed it in the job, so it wasn't used....

I used to use the tv as a timer (when I had one) to get things done. I'd promise myself breaks when the commercials came on and get stuff done when they weren't.

Also have you tried linkedin.com for jobs? Upload your resume there, Ive had several offers since I did.. It has employers on there and also job postings. Stay positive! Good luck! emoticon

Fifteen minutes a day might just be the perfect amount of time to spend on typing skills, etc. That way you don't get bored and you can see just how much you can do in 15 mins. Go for it!!! Love the attitude!

Success

Wednesday, October 26, 2011

I read an article on success today that made an impression on me. It basically reminded me that I make my own success and decide what I want to do in life. It gave me a good reminder and a big push in the direction that I need to go to get what I want out of life right now. I know I'm on the right path to finding a job by practicing skills that I know employers are looking for. This is taking up a bit of time every day. But I really feel that this is what I need to do. Finding a job is so important to me right now. I will finally be able to have a somewhat normal schedule. I will be able to pay my bills without worrying about how I'm going to get the money up. The stress and craziness of this and trying to find a job would finally be gone from my life. I know I will still have stress in my life. But I know that if I can survive this stress, I can get through any other stress that I have in my life.

Busy! Busy!

Tuesday, October 25, 2011

I've overbooked myself again today for the millionth time. But I'm bound and determined to prioritize and get the most important things done. I'm really trying hard to keep up with my goals that I've set for myself this week. If I set time limits on the things I do, I will be able to keep up with them. I think the kitchen timer will become a good friend and overused, but it was the first thing I could think of to use to limit my time that I spend on each activity. I got most of my goals accomplished yesterday, but I didn't get a chance to journal or to work on a scarf that I'm making for charity. Gotta spend time on them today.

I've been anxiously waiting to hear how you made out with your interview..How'd it go?

Funny, I used to use the timer int he classroom for the kids, but I seldom think to use it for myself, simple but efficient idea..

Glad you got so much done... check out my blog to see what happened to me today...Later, Lila

Off to a Good Start

Monday, October 24, 2011

My week started off well yesterday and I'm determined to keep the trend going during the week. I set some goals for myself yesterday and knocked off a couple already.

I went shopping with a dear friend who bought me some things I needed for my house and a microphone for my computer. The $8 microphone is worth a million dollars to me. I was able to skype with my daughter for a good half hour to 45 minutes last night. It was so good to see and hear her and have her hear me! I hated to end the call but knew we both had to finish up things for the day. I miss my daughters so much that it was difficult to not cry as we said goodbye.

My neighbor and I got talking just before I talked to my daughter. She said some things that really made sense to me. It was just the pep talk that I needed! It's funny how something good comes along when you least expect it.

I'm up and almost ready for the day today. I got a phone call already this morning from a guy who set up a job interview for tomorrow. And the place is only a mile up the road! I am so ready to have my luck change!

After my 10 am appointment, I've got running around, cleaning and job practicing to do. I decided to set my kitchen timer to help me not get carried away with one project so I have time to finish all that I want to do. It may work; it may not - but it's worth a try.

What was that you said, Patty?

" I'm up and almost ready for the day today. I got a phone call already this morning from a guy who set up a job interview for tomorrow. And the place is only a mile up the road! I am so ready to have my luck change!" repeated Patty..

"Yeah exactly the same for me too," said Lila..

Here's the deal, Patty, no more fooling around, both of us, let's get out there and give it our all, and get this job tomorrow and both of us have good news to report....What time's your interview? Mine's at 1:30!!!

Planning the Week Out

Sunday, October 23, 2011

I am going to do today what I've been threatening to do for a long time: loosely plan my week out and stick with my plans as much as possible. I want to see how many of my mini-goals that I set for myself can get accomplished.

I want to get a microphone for my computer today. This way I can Skype with my daughter Nova Scotia instead of calling her. I want to call my cell phone carrier and change my plan to add international calls for what I heard is only $5 a month. I got my bill today and didn't like it.

I want to spend at least 45 minutes a day practicing job skills. I want to spend another 45 minutes a day looking for jobs. If I can't do 45 minutes each, I want to spend at least a half hour at each.

I want to journal every day - even if it's only a line or two. And get back into the habit of saying prayers and reading my Bible. The combined can be limited to a half hour to 45 minutes. I've done this in the past and both have really helped my frame of mind.

I want to spend another half hour every day cleaning something well or organizing something in the condo. Organization in the household helps me with organization in the brain.

Spend time on my Avon business. It will not only help me get more money, but I think it will help with my self-confidence by being ambitious and meeting new people.

And, of course, I will keep making my to-do list every day. I keep it in a notebook on the kitchen table. I'm thinking of getting one of those dry-erase boards for my refrigerator or at least writing down the most important things on my calendar that's hanging up. I want to see if this helps me feeling like I at least accomplish the most important of my tasks each day.

Now, to re-read this blog next Sunday and see how I've done!

Wh,at a plan! Hope when you go back next Sunday, you find that you got a lot done. Of course, life is nothing if not flexible, eh? If a job comes up, you may have to change your plans and go with the flow.

BTW, if you get the international plan to call dd in NS, you will be able to call me too.... emoticon emoticon
