Trying to Schedule Well Again

Thursday, July 07, 2011

After yesterday of getting nothing done but work and school, I am ready to start back today on scheduling my life a little better. I'm still making my lists. But I am really trying to watch the clock and see how much time I spend on each project I list for myself. Since I am busy from the time I get up until the time I go to bed, I feel that somehow I am not making the best use of my time or I am just being too unrealistic on what I am able to do each day. (Or maybe a little of both!) By jotting down notes as to the time I spend doing things, I am hoping to shed some light on my processes each day.

I have made an observation already. Many times, I have the tv on mostly as background noise. I have been shutting the tv off more. I found that I'm not stopping to see what's going on, therefore saving some wasted time this way. It sounds trivial, but the extra minutes can be used to finish up what I want to get done. Then, at the end of the day, I may have more time to actually sit down, watch tv, and relax a little before going to bed - something I have really not allowed myself to do much of lately. I do try to watch the news to catch the weather and find myself dozing on the couch and missing the weather. The bed is so much more comfortable and I sleep so much better. One thing noted and being worked on!

I think you are absolutely right: those "minutes" lost to the t.v. somehow multiply into hours gone! I was getting into the same bad habit of "just checking" "just for a minute." No more!
And I do get more done as a result. Give it a try! I bet it will help!

I for one know about getting a good sleep and how much it helps. I don't usually get one, even with taking the sleeping pill, I get to sleep but then I wake hours before I should and can't get back to sleep. So, the sleep of a job well done and a day spent productively should feel very good!!

I always have the TV on for background noise too. Sometimes I wonder how much time I would have between finishing my chores and going to bed if I didn't stop to see what's going on so much. I hope turning it off works for you and get you more time to relax!

A Good (?) Wrench in Plans

Wednesday, July 06, 2011

I was going to spend the morning getting ready for my camping trip this morning. The afternoon was going to be spent on studying, chores and errands before I went to my Excel Class. I got a phone call to come into work for the company I temped for a few weeks ago. scheduling has drastically changed today, but I do get a day's pay. I will have to finish my sparking after my class - IF I can keep my eyes open.

Scheduling: Day 2

Tuesday, July 05, 2011

I did start yesterday limiting the time I spent on any one project. Some went well; some took longer; some projects were unscheduled. This idea of mine to be more mindful of how I use my time is going to take a little time. I'm ready to start today and see how I do. I've penciled in a general schedule in my planner to give myself some guidelines. I will write in my journal tonight how I think it went, where I did well, and try to see where I can improve the system.

That's what we learn here on SP... change doesn't come easily, it comes one trial & error at a time, along with tracking and blogging! Keep up the great work!

Still Working on my Improvement Plan

Monday, July 04, 2011

It's taking me a little longer than I had anticipated to plan my days and how I want to improve myself each day. I'm not sure if it's because it's a holiday weekend, or I just want to get it right, or maybe a little of both. I'm going to start today by practicing my typing a little and going through a couple lessons of both my Word and Excel school books. I'm also going to spend a little time going through a closet. I want to see what I want to keep, what needs to be thrown out, what can be given away, and what, if anything, can be sold for some quick cash to help cover this month's bills. This may sound like a lot to tackle in one day, but I've decided to get the old timer out and give myself a certain amount of time on each project. Then tomorrow I can do it again.

Sounds good. The jobs to do may be never-ending, but time does run out... Good plan to schedule a certain amt of time for each task you feel it is important to include in your day...(note to self.... listen to this advice too)

I finally got our resumes together with the cover letter and submitted it... so back on the merry-go-round... just like you...

emoticon I hope the day was a success. I love taking extra classes at the library. Does your city offer any? Enjoy your closet cleaning. I did that recently.

I'm Going to Improve Myself

Sunday, July 03, 2011

I've decided to study the books that I have gotten through school and on my own. I'm going online to practice my typing. I will go to Michigan Works and see what I can learn there. By doing this, it will 1) keep me busy, 2) improve my chances of possibly getting a job and 3) hopefully improve my confidence. This is the only thing I can think of that I haven't done a lot of lately to increase my chances of finding employment. Being discouraged has done nothing for me and I think it's getting old. I don't like feeling that way. So, this is what I will be doing this week. I will journal my experiences and take careful stock of myself.

Good plans. I would also recommend any of the "Knock 'Em Dead" series from Martin Yates. His work helped both my husband and me to find jobs (his last & my current).

A new month, a new plan for self improvement and to improve your job outlook! Good for you.

Remember to let the agencies know as you improve. I think they let you do skill tests on line, so maybe update?

Step by step...

Persistence should be rewarded and you are certainly persistent. I know just looking for a job is hard enough work, but if you are going to try to upgrade your skills at the same time, remember that is at least 2 jobs, so make sure to take care of yourself and get extra rest too...
All the best to you my friend...(you inspire me)

Way to take charge! Good for you! I have heard that Keebler is about to hire 100 plus people, but I don't know if you live close enough to a Keebler plant for that to matter. I just thought I would throw that out there!

    Hey Patty, good for you!

Hope you dont think i was being too harsh with you yesterday. However, that being said, that and the other advice you got appear to have kick started some enthusiasm for learning in you.

Thats brilliant. Lets face it, you know you better than anyone and if you arent prepared to spend the time on you why would you expect others to? (Hope that came out right - internet typing is so one dimensional and I wouldnt want to hurt ur feelings!)

U get what I mean tho. U are the only one who can control your destiny in any way. If you sit back and quit then u get the future deserving of a quitter. If you fight and work ur ass off you at least feel that you tried.

All the best of luck for your studying etc. Even reading your post today its totally different from the tone of your post yesterday. (I can see a wee bit of optimism creeping in there!)

Great idea!! I'm trying to figure out my situation as well so I can empathize with you at least a little. I'm not fully unemployed but went from full time work to 4 days a week last October, to 3 days a week last December and then to 2 days a week w/a pay cut in March. My boss truly wants to get me back to 3 days a week and more as the economy improves but I don't really see that happening any time soon. Leaves me with the old "should I stay or should I go now" song in my head! Hang in there and keep your chin up. Something that is just perfect for you will come along at the perfect time.
