VERTIGO.....Please help me, I'm falling.........

Monday, November 22, 2010

I promise that this is the last time I will ask for your advice on this subject. I always feel better when someone who has gone through something offers their opinion........it seems more valid to me because they have gone through it.
I have had Vertigo since a week ago Sunday night. I did not have a head injury and I do not have an inner ear infection. The PT that I went to on Thursday, thinks that it is most likely due to Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo or BPPV. It is the most common form of vertigo and is characterized by the sensation of motion initiated by sudden head movements or moving the head in a certain direction. This type of vertigo is rarely serious and can be treated. It is usually taken care of with one treatment. Not Me!!! After my treatment on Thursday, I was told that it could take up to 4 treatments. The treatment does NOT hurt, but it is torture because the head has to be put in positions that will make you dizzy (on purpose!) The room spins and after awhile, you begin to vomit. I was smart on Thursday to NOT eat anything before the treatment. I still had the dry heaves so bad that my ribs hurt!!! After 45 minutes I was allowed to go home (the trip home in the car was also torture because of the motion). Upon arriving home, I did throw up (only stomach acid) and then went to bed, but couldn't sleep. I am usually very brave when it comes to going through something to get to a better place. But I'm not sure that going through this again will do anything but make me sick all over. My appointment is tomorrow at 11:15 and I dread it!!!!!
I also get migraines on a regular basis which can cause vertigo. I do intend to mention this to the PT tomorrow to see if the treatment would still be the same.
My question to you is.......Have any of you ever experienced this and if so, what was your treatment, and how long did it take for you to get back to normal?
Thank you in advance.......

I have been suffering BPPV for 10 years or so. It's so severe and debilitating I always question if BPPV is the right diagnosis. I've had so many tests done and seen so many specialists through the years that have ruled out other diseases/conditions. It's such a bummer because there really is absolutely nothing that makes it better. I've tried diuretics, I guess the theory there is removing excess fluid from your body which could be building up in the ear and Antivert which was some sort of motion sickness drug I believe and it did absolutely nothing. Fortunately, my vertigo is once or twice a year for the most part and is usually gone in 24 hours. However, this time the overall symptoms have lasted a good while longer. I started feeling dizzy and generally not well Tuesday afternoon (rarely do I get a warning like this) went home early and went to bed. Of course laying down only intensifies or starts the real uncontrollable spinning but I've learned it's something I have to go through before it will get better. Was able to get out of bed Wednesday but just felt drained and off kilter. Again, Wednesday evening when I went to be the spinning was back. That has been the pattern until today which is Saturday. Not as severe as the initial but bad enough that I couldn't go to work if I had to. Fortunately this is a holiday. I'm so sorry you are experiencing vertigo and I wish I had a solution for both of us! Would love to hear from you if you ever find something that works to alleviate this condition.

I called my DIL she has this and this is what she sent me, exercises recommended by her Doctor.

Vestibular rehabilitation exercises, also referred to as Epley maneuvers, consist of having the patient sit on the edge of a table and lie down to one side until the vertigo resolves followed by sitting up and lying down on the other side, again until the vertigo ceases. This is repeated until the vertigo no longer occurs.

Particle repositioning maneuver is a treatment based on the idea that the condition is caused by displacement of tiny stones in the balance center (vestibular system) of the inner ear. The head is repositioned to move the stones to their normal position. This maneuver is repeated until the abnormal eye movements are no longer visible.

This is all she told me I hope it helps, she also takes a medication. Sandy

BRAN MUFFINS......

Sunday, November 21, 2010

I make Bran Muffins every Sunday and freeze them to use over the coming week. I have one every morning with my green tea. My Mom, who is 86, knows all about SparkPeople and is very supportive of my quest for a healthier lifestyle. But.........she just couldn't resist giving me the following article re: Bran Muffins. I just had to share it with you.

The couple were 85 years old, and had been married for sixty years. Though they were far from rich, they managed to get by because they watched their pennies.
Though not young, they were both in very good health, largely due to the wife's insistence on healthy foods and exercise for the last decade.
One day, their good health didn't help when they went on a rare vacation and their plane crashed, sending them off to Heaven.
They reached the pearly gates, and St. Peter escorted them inside. He took them to a beautiful mansion, furnished in gold and fine silks, with a fully stocked kitchen and a waterfall in the master bath. A maid could be seen hanging their favorite clothes in the closet.
They gasped in astonishment when he said, "Welcome to Heaven. This will be your home now."
The old man asked Peter how much all this was going to cost. "Why, nothing," Peter replied, "remember, this is your reward in Heaven."
The old man looked out the window and right there he saw a championship golf course, finer and more beautiful than any ever built on Earth.
"What are the green fees?" grumbled the old man.
"This is heaven," St. Peter replied. "You can play for free, every day."
Next they went to the clubhouse and saw the lavish buffet lunch, with every imaginable cuisine laid out before them, from seafood to steaks to exotic deserts, and free-flowing beverages.
"Don't even ask," said St. Peter to the man, "This is heaven, it is all free for you to enjoy."
The old man looked around and glanced nervously at his wife.
"Well, where are the low fat and low cholesterol foods, and the decaffeinated tea?" he asked.
"That's the best part," St. Peter replied, "you can eat and drink as much as you like of whatever you like, and you will never get fat or sick. This is heaven!"
The old man pushed, "No gym to work out at?"
"Not unless you want to." was the answer. "No testing my sugar or blood pressure or....."
"Never again. All you do here is enjoy yourself."

The old man glared at his wife and said, "You and your d_ _ _ Bran Muffins. We could have been here ten years ago!"

Kind of brings a tear to your eye doesn't it?

Great Blog -- Amazing that I would click on yours. Today in our Sunday Class we were discussing what Heaven would be like. Of course there were several ideas of what would be in heaven. I think it will be a great place, but I still like the idea of being the best that we can be while we are on earth. That will allow us to share more of the goods news of Jesus to the world.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING.........

Saturday, November 20, 2010

Twas the night of Thanksgiving,
But I just couldn't sleep.
I tried counting backwards,
I tried counting sheep.

The leftovers beckoned---
The dark meat and white,
But I fought the temptation
With all of my might.
Tossing and turning with anticipation,
The thought of a snack became infatuation.
So, I raced to the kitchen, flung open the door,
And gazed at the fridge, full of goodies
Galore.
Gobbled up turkey and buttered potatoes,
Pickles and carrots, beans and tomatoes.
I felt myself swelling so plump and so round,
"Til all of a sudden, I rose off the ground.
I crashed through the ceiling, floating into
The sky,
With a mouthful of pudding and a handful of
Pie.
But, I managed to yell as I soared past the
Trees......
Happy eating to all----Pass the cranberries,
Please.

May your stuffing be tasty,
May your turkey be plump.
May your potatoes 'n Gravy have nary a lump.
May your yams be delicious.
May your pies take the prize,
May your Thanksgiving Dinner stay off of your
Thighs!!!

Happy Thanksgiving to ALL........

The World Is Getting Too Complex For Me!!!

Friday, November 19, 2010

They even mess me up every time I go to the grocery store. You would think they could settle on something themselves but this sudden "Paper or Plastic?" every time I check out just knocks me for a loop. I bought some of those cloth reusable bags to avoid looking confused, but I never remember to take them in with me. Now I toss it back to them. When they ask me, "Paper or Plastic?" I just say, "Doesn't matter to me. I am bi-sacksual." Then it's their turn to stare at me with a blank look.
I was recently asked if I tweet. I answered, "No, but I do toot a lot."
Isn't it fun getting older??????? You have to have a healthy sense of humor......

AWESOME! I love people with a good sense of humor. My dad always says there is too much drama and tragedy in life, don't invite more, but look for the humor to balance it out instead.

WINTER IS COMING.......

The Farmer's Almanac is predicting a very cold winter.
It must be true because the squirrels are gathering NUTS.
Three of my Spark Friends have disappeared.

Are you OK?

Sorry, I am too sick to be more creative today.......
