Hidden Roadside Gems

Wednesday, June 30, 2010

The last vacation we took as a family was when the boys were 17 and 13. Before we left, we decided that we weren't going to eat any "Fast Food" on our journey. We were going to search out the small towns along the way and find the "Old fashioned Diners". We did; and it was great!!!!! We found some very unique food establishments and had some very unusual and delicious meals.
While reading our local Sunday paper, I found an article that listed some websites that did this very same thing. The one that appears to list examples from around the country is RoadFood.com. Others include Chowhound.com and Yelp.com.. I haven't had the time yet to check out these sites, but wanted to share them with you. I hope that you will enjoy some new eating experiences.

Thanks for the websites; I'll check them out. We plan to take a few days off & would like to visit local restaurants. We did it last summer in northern WI. We found some great places but not every small town has a place to eat & we didn't find food until 3pm the one day--I was hungry & almost went with the first thing I saw (but got it under control & made healthy choices).

THANKS!

We always found it interesting to eat in small town diners. Besides getting a great meal you had the opporturnity to see and talk with the local residents. That makes for a very interesting meal stop.

My Best Buddy Had Surgery Today.......

Tuesday, June 29, 2010

My Best Buddy is 7 years old and is an Australian Terrier. He has only been away from home once. He had to go to "Doggy Daycare" for 3 days while we were out-of-state for our oldest son's wedding. He hated it and didn't eat the entire time he was there. The owner of the daycare almost called us because Tyke was so miserable. His favorite place on earth is on one of our laps. Today he had surgery on his back left leg. He tore his Cruciate Ligament and his femur was nowhere near where it should be. The vet called this afternoon to report that the surgery went well, BUT.......while in there, he found that the ligament at the back of the knee was also torn and this one can't be repaired. He is hopeful that with the repair of the larger tendon, the leg will increase in strength overall and he will be able to bear weight and have some, if not almost full use in time. He is such a little trooper and I am really hoping that he will be so glad to be home tomorrow that his spirits will lift and he will beat the odds and recover fully. If you aren't a dog (or any pet) lover, you will wonder about the concern but if you are you will totally understand.

What Would You Have Said?????

Monday, June 28, 2010

Today, my husband and I drove to a city about 35 miles away to purchase lumber for a bench he is making for one of his customers. We have a favorite restaurant on the edge of this town and decided to stop for BRUNCH. He is on a healthy lifestyle program too and both of us wanted to combine breakfast and lunch on this trip. One of the specials offered was one of my favorites.......Eggs Benedict. Because I knew there would be more calories involved in the sauce, I asked if I could omit the hashbrowns that came with the meal and have a bowl of fruit instead. The waitress said that they didn't serve fruit as a side dish! She said that the only fruit they had was a banana. I said that a banana was fine and to please hold the hashbrowns.........I DID NOT want them. She brought the bill at the end of the meal and I was charged extra for the banana even though I didn't have the hashbrowns. I thought this was uncalled for, but, because I hate it when people fuss at restaurants, I didn't say anything. Would you have said something? If so, what?

I can be retty timid about this, so I probably wouldn't have said anything.
Also even though you had to pay more, you know you did what was better nutritionally for you. So be proud of the choices you made.

Really think the waitress should have told you that would be an extra charge. Can't believe that a banana would be worth more than an order of hash browns. Maybe that is not a favorite place anymore??

most places don't do substitutions. but she should have told you ahead of time. When in doubt, I would ask. The probably would have been willing to give you some lettuce instead. In their mind a peace of fruit is a saleable item. oh well ...live and learn

She should have made it clear that she wasn't doing a substitution ..That the banana was going to be an extra charge..Since she didnt I would have mentioned it.Most restaurants are very clear about when something is going to cost extra.

Yes, I would have said something. Probably would have asked to speak to the manager and ask him/her why since i didn't have the hash browns why was I charged extra for the banana? You may not have got the answer you were looking for but at least you would know.
If it was me I would probably call and find out.
At the very least they should have told you that you would be charged extra when you asked for the fruit.

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!!!!!

The fishermen are home...........with lots of fish to contribute to many healthy meals this summer and (the devil made me say this emoticon) my husband, who has lost in 3 months or less, what it took me almost 10 months to lose, gained 3 pounds during his trip, AND I finally left my plateau behind, AND lost 2 pounds while he was gone!!!!! Life is good!!!
Now I feel guilty about the enjoyment I got from his gain, but I also know that he will lose those 3# in the next day or 2. I admit to Male Metabolism Envy!!! emoticon

Boy do I know about that (read my recent blog.) Only, don't feel guilty about that unless it's something you have control over.
Congrats on YOUR weight loss!

I've seen women with muscles and while I don't like the look of those in body building contests, I do envy the athletic types that seem to be chisled by Michaelangelo himself. I would settle for a metabolism that would shed a pound when I gave up 3500 calories. Instead I have one that says : "oh...were cutting back....okay, I'll just slow down for you". grrrrh!

I have to cheer with you!!!! You lost 2 lbs!!! I do know how you feel about the male metabolism, they have no idea how difficult it is for us to take off the same amount of weight.
I am sure he will be back down in less than a week.
So HAPPY FOR YOU!
Just wondering if I sent my husband on a fishing trip for a week if the results would be as good?!!

a little emoticonin all of us--yours is just a baby--but don't feed it...
once you develop the muscle mass he probably carries, your metabolism would increase, BUT do you WANT his muscle mass?

A Poem About Our Girlfriends......

Saturday, June 26, 2010

Someone will always be prettier.
Someone will always be smarter.
Some of their houses will be bigger.
Some will drive a better car.
Their children will do better in school.
And their husband will fix more things around the house.
So let it go, and love you and your circumstances.
Think about it!
The prettiest woman in the world can have hate in her heart.
The most highly favored woman on your job may be unable to have children.
The richest woman you know, she's got the car, the house, the clothes........might be lonely.
And the Word says, "If I have not love, I am nothing." So, again, love YOU.
Love who you are.
Look in the mirror in the morning and smile and say, "I am too Blessed to be Stressed and too Annointed, to be Disappointed!"
"Winners make things happen.......Losers let things happen!"

To the world you might be one person, to me you are SPECIAL!
