Shoot or Shoot???

Sunday, November 22, 2009

As I sit here writing this blog entry, I am hearing gun shots that are very close by!!! I have been married to my husband for 41 years and he has been hunting for more years than that. I have nothing against him hunting. I say nothing against him hunting. We used to eat alot of venison, but now, with the scare of Chronic Wasting Disease, neither of us cares to anymore. When my husband shoots a deer, he takes it to a locker where it is processed and given to the local food pantry, so it DOES NOT go to waste. I prefer to "Shoot" my deer with a camera.

My sentiments exactly. My nephew was taken game hunting on a farm at the young age of 13. He was thrilled at the night ride on the back of the 4x4. He loved the excitement of tracking the animal. But when it came to looking through the site and seeing the buck stare straight back at him, he decided this sport was not for him. To this day he won't even eat venison.
But food is food for those who need it. I have eaten guinea fowl...bit tough and blue, but my in-laws used to catch these little things and cook them regularly. Ugh, I like to buy my meat all cut up and not resembling the original product...I'm the all time coward!

I too would prefer to "shoot" my deer with a camera, and do that quite often. For us venison makes up a lot of our diet, makes great sausage and the grandchildren LOVE the jerky. You are definitely putting your venison to a very good use. The hunter still gets to hunt and others share in the bounty.

The Elusive "Exercise Cat"

Saturday, November 21, 2009

For the past week, I have caught glimpses of a beautiful Calico cat in our woods. She is very wary of humans and quickly hides when she knows I am coming anywhere near her. It has been an unusually warm November (we often have snow by now) and I am especially glad, because she looks like she could have a litter of kittens any day now!!!!! I call her the Elusive Exercise Cat, because I have never walked in our woods so much!!!!! I search for her every day and hope that she will find a safe place to have her kittens. Since Deer Hunting started today, I will put off my search in the woods for the duration.

Maybe food and an old blanket can be left out. She needs a warm safe place to have her babies. Well keep enjoying the woods.

Awww...have you tried putting food and water out? Often just shaking some dry food will get them interested. Hope she finds shelter. And yes...stay out of those woods if the hunters are out.

Great News!!!

Friday, November 20, 2009

It seems that we are more likely to spend more time and energy on the bad news in our lives and some of us can even dwell on it to the extent that we become severely depressed. Instead of telling you about a negative experience, I am going to tell you about the wonderful telephone call I received from a former student (I am a retired teacher). She had cancer about 6 years ago and was told after very aggressive treatment that she would probably never have children. After this news, she questioned getting married, as she did not want to deprive her husband of ever being a father. Her GREAT news is.........she is pregnant and due in May. I know what they will be especially THANKFUL for this Thanksgiving.

A Winning Breakfast

Thursday, November 19, 2009

Breakfast is my favorite meal to eat out!!!!! I can eat breakfast anytime of the day and love restaurants that offer it 24/7. The only problem is.........my favorite breakfast is Corned Beef Hash with 2 eggs on top and hashbrowns!!!!! At least, it used to be. Today, I ate Breakfast for lunch at a very good restaurant and walked away feeling good about myself. I had Egg Beaters instead of eggs and had them filled with tomatoes, green peppers, onions and zucchini. I also had 2 pieces of whole wheat toast and had jelly on just one of the pieces. I had green tea with the meal. I was FULL!!! Then I walked everywhere I went for 4 hours. I can't wait to get on the scale tomorrow!!!!!

My Favorite Day of the Week

Wednesday, November 18, 2009

Wednesday is my favorite day of the week for one reason. My 2-1/2 year old Grand-daughter spends from 4PM till around 8PM with us. From the minute she bursts through the door (and I do mean BURSTS!), and immediately shouts,"Where's my Gramma?", I am putty in her hands!!!!! She is exactly what I need to get back in touch with my "Inner Child", which too often gets pushed back in a corner. To look at everyday things through her eyes and to witness her wonder and enthusiasm takes at least 10 years off my age and I actually feel her excitement!!! I wish I could bottle this to last until the next time I see her........

Actually he's a big part of my decision to change my life - he was FAST and I needed to keep up!! Have a GREAT evening with that little one - they grow too fast.
