A true story from the pages of the Manchester Evening Times
Last Wednesday a passenger in a taxi heading for Salford Station leaned over to ask the driver a question and gently tapped him on the shoulder to get his attention.
The driver screamed, lost control of the cab, nearly hit a bus, drove up over the curb and stopped just inches from a large plate window.
For a few moments everything was silent in the cab. Then, the shaking driver said, "Are you OK? I'm so sorry, but you scared the daylights out of me."
The badly shaken passenger apologized to the driver and said, "I didn't realize that a mere tap on the shoulder would startle someone so badly."
The driver replied, "No, no, I'm the one who is sorry, it's entirely my fault. Today is my very first day driving a cab. I've been driving a hearse for 25 years."

Mangoes taste so good that people forget they are also healthy! Discover how the "king of fruits" can help you........
Health Benefits:
1. Prevents cancer:
Research has shown antioxidant compounds in mango fruit have been found to protect against colon, breast, leukemia and prostate cancers.
2. Lowers Cholesterol:
The high levels of fiber, pectin and vitamin C help to lower serum cholesterol levels, specifically Low-Density Lipoprotein (the bad stuff).
3. Clears the Skin:
Can be used both internally and externally for the skin. Mangoes clear clogged pores and eliminate pimples.
4. Eye Health:
One cup of sliced mangoes supplies 25% of the needed daily value of vitamin A, which promotes good eyesight and prevents night blindness and dry eyes.
5. Alkalizes the Whole Body:
The tartaric acid, malic acid, and a trace of citric acid found in the fruit help to maintain the alkali reserve of the body.
6. Helps in Diabetes:
Mango leaves help normalize insulin levels in the blood. The traditional home remedy involves boiling leaves in water, soaking through the night and then consuming the filtered decoction in the morning. Mango fruit also have a relatively low glycemic index (41-60) so moderate quantities will not spike your sugar levels.
7. Improved Sex:
Mangoes are a great source of vitamin E. Even though the popular connection between sex drive and vitamin E was originally created by a mistaken generalization on rat studies, further research has shown balanced proper amounts (as from whole food) does help in this area.
8. Improves digestion:
Papayas are not the only fruit that contain enzymes for breaking down protein. There are several fruits, including mangoes, which have this healthful quality. The fiber in mangoes also helps digestion and elimination.
9. Remedy for Heat Stroke
Juicing the fruit from green mango and mixing with water and a sweetener helps to cool down the body and prevent harm to the body.

Kale has risen to fame in the company of other dark-green leafy vegetables such as spinach, Swiss chard and collards. This group of plants gained their healthy reputation through the vitamins and special chemicals that they contain, which do everything from keeping your bones strong to reducing your risk of cancer.
Still the question remains: Why has kale's recent surge in popularity begun to overshadow that of other dark-green leafy vegetables?
While it may be partially fad and partially flavor, in truth, kale's calcium content alone could have won it a leading role at the dinner table. Thankfully for us though there are even more talents hidden in this tasty green, that make it well-deserving of the hype.
Kale's powerhouse nutritional profile makes it a star in three particular areas:
1. Antioxidants
2. Anti-inflammatory nutrients
3. Anti-cancer nutrients
Kale: Vitamins, minerals and healthy chemicals galore!
--Kale is an excellent source of beta carotene (which converts to vitamin A in the liver), vitamin K, vitamin C, lutein and zeaxanthin.
--Kale contains glucosinolates and their derived isothiocyantes such as: indole-3-carbinol, sulforaphane, phenethyl-isothiocyanate, benxyl-isothiocyanate and allyl-isothiocyanate.
--Kale also contains smaller amounts of omega-3, Riboflavin (B2), Niacin (B3), Thiamine (B1), Pantothenic acid B5), Vitamin B6, Folate (B9), Vitamin E, Iron, Magnesium, Manganese, Phosphorus, Potassium and Zinc.
--It is also an especially noteworthy source of calcium!
Here is a quick look at what some of these specific nutrients do:
1. Antioxidants
Zeaxanthin and lutein (both carotenoids): Zeaxanthin and lutein are powerful antioxidants that protect against degenerative illnesses such as cancer, cardio-vascular disease and macular degeneration.
2. Anti-inflammatory
Vitamin K and Omega-3: Vitamin K and Omega-3 play key roles in reducing inflammation in the body by regulating the inflammatory processes.
3. Anti-Cancer
Glucosinolates: Kale, along with the rest of the members of the Brassica family (such as cabbage and broccoli), contains a number of these anti-cancer chemicals. These groups of glucosinolates and their derived isothiocyantes block the growth of certain types of cancer cells, boost DNA repair and help cells to detox!

It seems that people either love beets or they hate them. Whether you already love them, or just haven't discovered their many marvels, here are 7 reasons to eat more beets:
1. Beets are high in nutrients such as folate, manganese, potassium, and vitamin C, making them an excellent source of nutrients, and a particularly good choice for pregnant women who have higher folate needs during pregnancy.
2. In their uncooked state, beets also contain an important compound called betaine, which research has shown reduces several compounds linked to inflammation in the body. In other words, it's a great anti-inflammatory food that helps protect us from the effects of aging and disease.
3. Beets are one of Nature's miracles in the prevention of cancer. The fiber found in beets seems to increase the body's special immune compounds that are responsible for detecting and removing abnormal cells before they can become cancerous.
4. Beets help fight cancer. The phytonutrients---proanthocyanidins---that gives beets their rich purplish-red hue has potent anti-cancer capabilities.
5. Beets have been recommended for many years to help purify the blood.
6. Beets also help cleanse the liver---one of the most overworked organs in the body, with over 500 functions including: cleansing toxins, removing excess hormones, and metabolizing fat.
7. They are versatile. They can be eaten raw (grated), steamed, boiled (although many nutrients are lost in the cooking water), or added to soups and stews. I love steamed beets tossed with a little flax oil and unrefined sea salt. Remember: the anti-cancer properties of beets lessen with heat. So it's always a great idea to enjoy a little grated raw beetroot on your salads.
