reality check

Friday, January 17, 2014

Yesterday, as I was preparing to go out shopping with my husband for the day, I had to decide what I would wear. I chose a pair of jeans I had not worn in three weeks. Boy, not good. Tight indeed. I could still wear them, but not very comfortably. I then decided to look in the mirror without my shirt on and see just how bad it looked. Yes, that was a good decision, even though it made me sick. What have I done to myself?? I have been in denial and have let myself get way out of control.
Rude awakening? Yes! Needed to be awakened?? YES!! Maybe I should take a picture of myself like that to remind myself of just why I will be taking better care of myself.
I have twin boys that will be graduating in May and I want to be able to have a choice in what I wear for their special day and look and feel good in it!
My plan?
Continue with my good habits
1. exercise every day, even if it is not intense (my body does need to rest at least one day)
2. Drink plenty of water
3 choose lean meats and healthy fats
4 eat plenty of vegetables and fruits

Things I need to work on
1 weigh and measure food
2 be consistent in eating the right way
3 log food eaten each day
4 bake less often to keep tempting treats out of my sight

Today has been a really good day for me so far, as far as doing all these things. One day at a time is how I will reach my goals!!!

I would love for some of you sparkers to check up on me!!

One thing that has really helped me is picking one specific goal for the month and holding myself accountable for it every day. It helps even more if you can find a Spark Friend to do the same goal so you can check on each other every day. For example, my October goal was to track *everything* I ate every day for the whole month. My November goal was to exercise 10 min. *every* day. Health issues & the holidays interrupted Dec & Jan, but I'm back on track with my February goal: staying in my calorie range every day for the whole month. Best of luck and keep up the good work!

Hi, I'm Amina, still in my first week at SP, and I was reading comments below a seated abs workout video when I saw yours. It was your comment that made me decide to give that workout a try later today when the 40+ C. temperatures will hopefully drop to something reasonable. I had to come check out your page, and saw your amazingly beautiful quilts. You truly do have a gift for quilting!

I understand how you were feeling while writing your blog... been there myself sooo many times, but this time I know I can break the cycle, because this time I've found Spark People, and am still amazed that there is so much helpful information, so many wonderful healthy recipes, and the support of other people who are sharing the same goal - not just to be fitter and healthier, but to be happier.

Wishing you success in your journey to the new, happier, healthier you, and with being able to wear something to your sons' graduation you chose simply because you loved the way it looked on you, not because it fitted. (Been there, done that so many times.)

Hope it's ok if I add you as a Spark friend?

I have let myself get off track since the holidays and like you; I am starting to see it in the way my clothes are fitting. Let's get back on track together! I will go back to measuring my food, tracking it more accurately, staying within my calorie allowance, and getting more exercise like walking more.

Some people really benifit from taking pictures of themselves to keep motivated. I did it once but didn't find it too helpful. To each their own. Seems like you have some good goals in place and know what you have to do. Just keep at it. Those jeans will fit nice in no time!

Motivation gets us started, but it's good habits that keep us going! God Bless YOU! Vic.

October, here we come!

Monday, September 30, 2013

The day is off to a good start. I just added up my miles for the month of September and figured I walked 163 miles! I think that is my best ever. Woohoo!

The eating thing is still so crazy for me. Just when I get going good, life comes along and throws me another curve ball. But I am not going to give up. I will achieve what I set out to do. I know I can do this!!

Something just clicked

Thursday, September 19, 2013

Yesterday as I was getting ready to prepare dinner, I decided to try a new recipe. Then I began thinking about how much I love to bake and am missing being able to do much of that right now. We recently moved and I do not have the outlet to share what I bake anymore. So I am trying not to bake much because I just simply go nuts eating it when I do.

Anyway, I thought, why not put all that baking energy into trying some new, healthy recipes?? I could spend hours in the kitchen preparing some yummy treats, so why not better use the time and prepare something that will be better for me and my husband?
Yes, I will still bake, but save that for times when I know I can get rid of it.

Sounds like you have a good plan.

As an alternative (or when you just HAVE to bake) contact your local food bank, homeless shelter, or women's shelter and see if they would take home made baked goods. I bet you'll get a positive response and many Thank Yous.

10 year anniversary

Saturday, September 14, 2013

I just realized today that it was 10 years ago that I began my walking journey. I started walking because of what was going on in the lives of my family and that was the only way I could think of to deal with all I was feeling. What was a hard time in my life brought me to the point to get out the door and walk. That was also 70 lbs ago.I still have more weight to lose because I keep dinking around with my food choices. But I am proud to say, my good habit of walking is here to stay. Maybe 10 years from now I will be able to say that about my eating!

Bug Attack!!

Tuesday, September 10, 2013

While I was out walking today, and looking for golf balls as is my habit of late, I began being stalked by a rather large bug. It looked kind of like a fly, but about an inch long. Buzz, buzz, buzz by my head and all around me! I thought I got rid of it, but then it was there again, buzzing, buzzing, buzzing! Several times I thought I got rid of it, but then it would appear again! Finally, I figured out he must just be sitting on my back, where I could not reach him.

What to do?? I was tempted to walk back home and have my husband help me, but I was afraid I would not go back out and continue my walk. So I tried rubbing my back against a tree. I thought that worked, but then I heard the now familiar buzz...

I was so ready to take my shirt off and be rid of that thing, but maybe not such a good idea!! Finally, I found a fellow walker and pleaded for her help. She was not too thrilled to kill that bug on my back, but thankfully, she did! I was so afraid that it was going to bite me.

I guess I must have disturbed a nest or something. I will keep clear of that area from now on!
I am happy to say, despite the bug, I had my longest walk. I logged 7.11 miles! Woohoo!!
Anyone have some tips on how to deter bugs from you while you walk????
