A GREAT Gift to Give is...

Thursday, December 17, 2009

...The gift of LIFE! Our church was doing a blood drive today. I was thrilled to see it on the schedule. It's been a LOOOONG time since I've donated blood. I always seem to be pregnant or nursing when the opportunity came around.

I was a little nervous. Not about the actual poke or drawing of blood but whether or not I'd be able to. My iron count is usually low. At my last doctor's appointment he told me to take a daily iron pill. I've been doing that but the first poke they did said 12.3 (12.5 is the lowest they'll take). So she had a different nurse come do it. 12.5, thank goodness! I'm surprised it's at the very lowest with me taking extra iron. Something I'll have to bring up to the doctor.

I was fine through the whole thing but a little apprehensive about standing up and walking across the gym to the snack table they had set up. I get light headed (no clue why) and didn't know how my body would react to the blood being taken out. I made it just fine, sat down and saw my choices of snacks were Cheez-Its, Oreos, Trail Mix, Oatmeal Raisin Cookies, Orange Juice or Apple Juice. Hmmmm, none of them was in my daily plan but I chose the Orange Juice and Unsalted Trail Mix...AND the oreos!!!! I felt I could treat myself a little since I donated some blood PLUS I was hoping the food would help alleviate my light-headedness.

Well, I came home and took out the wrappers from my purse (of course I saved them how else would I know what to log on my Food Tracker). As I logged them in I realized my trail mix was 2 servings (240 calories). The oreos (only ate four of the six) was 160 calories and the O.J. was 80. For a grand total of 480. Yikes, that was my snack. But I did check my grand total for the day and I still have 400-750 left to eat. I think I'll have a scrambled egg, veggie burrito on a whole grain with flax Flatbread with some salsa.

For all you Twilight fans out there I have NOT seen New Moon yet. I set the goal to see it when I lost my first 25lbs. As of this morning I'm only 1.4lbs away from that. Any day now. WooHoo!!!
Just finished my last meal (I cut off my eating by 6:30) I had my flatbread toasted with scrambled eggs, mushrooms, green peppers, cheddar cheese, salsa, .5 an apple and 16 oz of water. My calories came in at 1588, 8 more than the lowest SP has set for me. The carbs and fat were on the high end today but everything was in range.

I think it is my privilege and my obligation to give blood so I take a SlowFE pill each day, and that keeps me above the 125 mark. My synagogue had a blood drive last Sunday and I was able to donate for the 15th time. WooHoo!
Keep on Sparking,

It's wonderful that you were able to donate blood. I haven't been able to do it for a while due to anemia, but I finally got the all clear and it's on my list of goals for the new year. Well done!

As far as your iron levels being low, you may just be a slow absorber like I was. The iron supplements were horrible on my system and had a negligible effect on my iron level. I saw a hematologist and did a series of IV infusions and I was finally able to rebound. At my annual physical earlier this year the lab results were showing anemia again. I saw a hematologigst again and she did more in depth blood studies. It turns out that this time I was not anemic at all, but a DNA test revealed a genetic disorder. It's not life threatening and will never be an issue for me, but I now know to push for more info if my lab work looks funny.

Oh my, I can run on, can't I? LOL. Not saying this is the course you should take, only that you should ask your doctor about alternatives. Anemia is no fun!

Way to go. Glad you were able to do the blood drive. I'm not able to, I hate needles, but my DH does give blood routinely at the hospital. They call him every few weeks to see if he is able to schedule an appt. So happy that many people can give something to precious.

You did great with your calories. Isn't it odd how fast those calories add up. Great job that you logged them into your tracker and knew exactly where you were at. You're doing awesome!!!

Way to go, girl. Hopefully you'll get to see New Moon in the next week or so. I've not seen it - I loved the books but have yet to be able to sit through the first movie. My daughter loves both the books and the movies. It's funny, she had no desire at all to read the books until a friend asked her to go see Twilight so she'd have someone to go with - now she's completely gaga about anything Twilight (esp. Edward)! emoticon

You did a good job recovering from the oreo/oj fix. Who would have guessed giving blood could be such an epxerience.

...To TWO-Ville! I'm ecstatic! Today I weighed 298.8. I'm hoping to steadily go down for the next two weeks before TOM arrives so I'll be far enough away from the 3's that I will NEVER see that as my starting number again!!!

My pedometer is broken so I've got to make sure I step it up. At curves I get about 1800 steps in and every mile is a bout 2000. So that helps me know what I've got to do today! Hubby is out of town so it's going to be a little tricky but I WILL DO IT!

Thanks so much to all the supportive friends out there. This definitely would NOT be possible without the inspiration, motivation, great examples, and accountability I feel I receive from Spark People! emoticon

I CAN Look At Myself!

Sunday, December 13, 2009

For years I haven't liked what I've seen in the mirror. The person looking back at me has NOT been who I feel I am inside. When I walk by a mirror I never look. When I brush my teeth I stare down at the sink. I didn't put make-up on to avoid having to see myself. The only time I couldn't avoid it was on the days I decided to curl my hair.

Today that all changed! As I got out of the shower I looked up and saw myself in the mirror. Sure there are still the same rolls of fat as before but this time I took pride in my body.

THIS is the body that has worked hard for the past 5 weeks.
THIS is the body that has lost 20lbs.
THIS is the body that carried, delivered and nurtured 7 babies
THIS is the body that is going to continue to work for the next 130lbs.
THIS is the body that will carry me for LIFE and allow me to be an active participant in LIFE.

Sure I still feel different inside than my body shows but I'm thankful for my strong mind and body that are helping me make the necessary changes.

One Month at Curves and The Results!

Friday, December 11, 2009

So I joined Curves on November 11th. At the initial visit they weigh and measure you and then do so every month after that. My weigh-in days for Curves will always be the 11th of each month (unless it falls on a Sunday).

I have been looking forward to it! I weigh myself at home and although the two scales weigh me differently I know the numbers have been going down. I was really looking forward to finding out the inches, body fat and BMI info.

I jumped out of bed when my alarm went off at 5a.m. excited to find out my results. Here they are:

Start Date 11/11/09 Today 12/11/09
Weight 319 301.5 (-17.5)
Bust 52 51 (-1)
Waist 49 46.5 (-2.5)
Abdomen 57.5 56 (-1.5)
Hips 58 55.5 (-2.5)
Thighs 33 31.5 ( x2= -3)
Arms 18 16 (x2 = -4)
Body Fat 47.9% 46.2% (-1.7%)
BMI 43.6 41.2 (-2.4)

WooHoo, I'm on cloud 9! It's so motivating to see results. I know since I'm just starting things are coming off easier but I'm hoping by seeing success it will keep me going when things slow down.

Just Checking In

Thursday, December 10, 2009

I did get my 10,000 steps in yesterday!!! Actually 11,760. While my daughter was in her appointment I walked around the block over and over again. It was dark and cold but it felt WONDERFUL!

Several women at CURVES were talking about the Biggest Loser Finale. I told them about my goal to beat Shay by May and that we were the same weight. I received a lot of encouragement from them and it will be great to have their support as well!

I am SO excited for tomorrow it is my one month mark at CURVES. Every month they weigh and measure you. I used to fear scales who would have thought I would be counting down the minutes to get on one!

Have a wonderful SPARK day!
