Zombies, Run! 5K W1D1

Wednesday, June 05, 2013

Today I started my 5K training program using the Zombies, Run! 5K app. It is fantastic! This is the most motivated I have ever felt to go out and complete a run. The hardest part for me is going to be allowing myself "off" days to rest! I think I will be building my fitness routine around this whole idea of gamification. This means making my strength training and other fitness/health goals relate back to the zombies app. It'll be like roleplaying in real life.

The zombies app, for those that don't know, has the premise that you are part of a base that is surviving against the zombie apocalypse. You have to go out on runs to collect things the base needs to operate. There are missions to accomplish these tasks. The 5K app is a little different from the normal version in that it is a training program. The premise that you are getting fit in order to be able to go out on "real" missions.

This week consists of three days of 10 min walk + 1 min walk + 15 sec run intervals x 10 + 10 free style run. The free style run can be walking, slow running, sprinting, whatever you feel you have energy left for. I did about 3 minutes of running and 7 minutes of walking for the free style section. There something quite motivating about getting fit in order to run away from zombies.

Tomorrow I will try to do some strength training since I will need to give my legs a rest. According to my fitbit I walk/ran a total of 6.16 miles today. Tomorrow I can focus on my core and upper body. Woohoo!

Motivating Me

Thursday, May 16, 2013

I'm doing a lot of learning and discovering as I begin this process of taking care of myself. I was working under really high stress levels for such a very long time, that I think I've forgotten how to really relax and just *not* be stressed.

Tomorrow I'm restarting my Spark Solution, as I derailed for a couple days. I'll feel better just starting fresh rather than trying to pick up somewhere in the middle. It doesn't really matter, it's all healthy and it's all taking care of me.

Fitbit is helping me a lot. I'm tracking all my movement and weighing in daily to watch my progress. I think that really helps me keep on top of myself a bit.

Another big helper is blogging, so I'm going to be more vigilant about that. I need to be able to check in with myself and make sure I'm happy with my actions.

Keep on Sparkin'!!

Spark Solution Day 2: Bumpy Ride

Friday, May 10, 2013

I'm going to be honest. Yesterday started out great, and then went downhill by evening. I ate well all day- staying in my calorie range and focusing on good, healthy foods. I even got out on two walks for my cardio. I had planned to do some zumba, but I guess I'm saving that for tomorrow's cardio.

By evening I had gotten a really bad headache. I don't know if it is allergies (I'm already taking Claritin) or if I'm just sick. I have been traveling a lot the last few weeks and have been exposed to a wide variety of people, so illness isn't out of the question. I didn't sleep much at all last night and I'm still in a lot of pain this morning. I took Excedrin, which took the edge off. Oh, well, I'll just take it easy today and hope I get back asap. emoticon

Tomorrow I walk at my graduation ceremony. emoticon It's funny, I'm not really feeling anything one way or the other about it. I'm glad to have finished, but I think it hasn't really sunk in yet that I'm DONE. No more crazy undergrad courses. I'm officially a grad student now.

Ok, my goals:

emoticon blog daily (2/14 complete)
emoticon follow spark solution fitness plan
emoticon feel comfortable in size 12
emoticon walk 10,000 steps per day (1/14 complete)

Spark Solution Day 1: Fresh Start

Thursday, May 09, 2013

Here I present my awful, embarrassing "before" picture. emoticon This was taken last week when I went to Paris for a computing conference. I'm on the far right with the big gut sticking out over my jacket. So, I just wanted to get a "before" picture up here so I can start making some "after" pictures. emoticon

I'm spending the first part of my morning planning out my meals for the day. I know the Spark Solution has meals planned out for you, but I just am too picky when it comes to food. I'll just do some swapping and keep the calorie levels about the same.

For exercise I'm going to do some at home zumba that I created with a youtube channel. Over the last year I have been perfecting this channel into a fun, doable workout. Spark Solution says to do 20 minutes of cardio, but I think I'll end up going longer. I haven't been super sedentary the last few months, so I think I can push it up one notch.

Goals thus far:
emoticon lose 5% of my body weight (0%/5% complete)
emoticon blog daily (1/14 complete)
emoticon follow spark solution fitness plan
emoticon feel comfortable in size 12
emoticon walk 10,000 steps per day (1/15 complete)
