Flogging Myself

Monday, January 09, 2012

I said I was going to go to the gym, but I didnt make it. And now its 9 pm and too late to start anything.

At least I made a healthy dinner (chicken breast, escarole and I successfully stopped myself at ONE SMALL baked potato) with plenty of leftovers for tomorrow and reincarnation* for the rest of the week. I'm having a hankering** for lentils and there are some tasty looking lentil/spinach/curry things on the SparkRecipes.

*I cant eat the same thing all week, but I can reinvent my leftovers into new forms: enchiladas, soup, potpie, etc.

**Unless you are pregnant, you cant have cravings. You have hankerings.

I love the debate on hankering vs. craving, but I just plain want something when I want it! Although I must admit that I have never actually craved lentils... My brother in law on the other hand, eats lentils and rice for breakfast every morning! He is quite the healthy dude! If I am going to crave something, it is either going to be a real italian wood fired oven pizza, you know, the kind with the really thin crust and the very little but wonderful cheese, or frankly chocolate!

But I digress...it is January and I am not craving anything but water and weight loss! You sound like a very health eater. Good luck!

Finally, after 2.5 years I find another blogger who uses end/footnotes. I don't use them as often as I used to. Speaking of which.

*I cant eat the same thing all week, but I can reinvent my leftovers into new forms: enchiladas, soup, potpie, etc.
- Different spice combos can really turn the same thing into different things, for a few days anyway. I like your thinking better though.

"**Unless you are pregnant, you cant have cravings. You have hankerings.
- I'm not only not pregnant, I'm a dude. And when I want chocolate, I can't afford to have the extra syllable to make it a "hankering". It's a craving. Just sayin' :D

Regarding the workout, the thing that got me the most bang for buck on the workout front when I recently started working out was the 10 minute home workout. Whether it was one of Coach Nicole's vids or a simple (5 min kbell core exercise and 5 minutes of light upperbody). It made it so easy at 9:00 to say, "only 10 minutes, I can do it.

Best of fortune to you on your journey.

We Dont Know What We Dont Know Until We Know It

Friday, January 06, 2012

How & why is Donald Rumsfeld running thru my head as I enter my food on Spark?

Because until I started using the software to start tracking my calories, I never knew how out of wack my eating patterns were. I always thought I was a reasonably healthy eater: very little red meat, salads pretty often, blah, blah blah. Now I have the hard facts in front of me and its been ... well eye-opening to say the least.

Right now, I'm just focused on getting a handle on *what* I eat. For example what 1 c of pasta looks like on a plate and why its better to have a meatball instead of filling up the plate with a second & third cup of pasta.

Research says those who journal and track calories do better over the long run than others. Because if you have to be honest with yourself about the candy bar, it makes it easier to say no in the first place. And when *I* see those numbers at the bottom of the column...I keep trying to get them lower.

I have a love/hate relationship with the tracker; as much as I love how easy it is, and how much it helps me to lose weight, I hate seeing that some of my favorite healthy foods (peanut butter, bananas, ect) have an unexpectedly high number of calories! It's frustrating, but I'm better off knowing.

Thanks for stopping by my blog and commenting! emoticon

Tracking the calories is a big eye opener for me as well. But seeing those numbers within the correct range makes me realize I can do this. We can do this.

For some reason it says 1 serving even though I said it serves 6.

I'm spectacularly proud of the Tips section. You get a good feel for my "voice" there.

Tracking Calories explains it to me

Monday, January 02, 2012

I joined Spark because I wanted a calorie tracker. (You should hear Jillian Michaels jump all over people who dont.)

I just came back from Zumbatomic and was starving, even though I thought I had eaten a nice meal. When I finished entering all my meals it was clear why: my dinner was much smaller than I thought it was.

So I fixed myself some plain yogurt with frozen fruit. Now I feel better. Its easier to resist the siren song of the cookies and icecream if your belly isnt growling!
